Hey Jack!!
Hey Jack! After speaking with some artists in the community about certain topics, I’d like to address some things about the septicart videos! As cool as it is that you feature a bunch of artists in one big video, we think there are some things that can be improved about the septicart videos!
1.) Art that was used for the thumbnails of the septicart videos were never properly credited. Maybe next time you could ask permission before using them, and properly credit the artist, some artists got upset about that.
2.) Only some of the artists (not all) you featured you read their usernames out loud or showed on screen. We think it would be awesome if you could show every featured artist’s username on screen while showing the art!
3.) Since you are already featuring the artists in a video, maybe you could leave links in the descriptions to the original posts or the artist’s page/profile to give them proper credit.
4.) Maybe having a list of rules posted somewhere before starting the event so nobody there is no spam, art theft, etc.
5.) Showing individual artworks is cool, but maybe scrolling through multiple artworks from time to time in the video would be neat! Even thought they’re not officially “featured”, it would make someone’s day just by being in the video! (which I did notice is something you did at the end of the last one!). We know you can’t include everyone because there is so much stuff submitted for septicart, but doing that throughout the video would be cool!
6.) In general (when reblogging and liking art, or featuring in septicart): Check for stolen/traced art! We have noticed some people who post stolen art or just straight up trace it, which is totally unfair! Maybe having a rule that immediately disqualifies someone from being featured in the video, even if they create an original piece after stealing and submit that.
7.) Having specific topics to draw would be nice! Even though PMA was a topic, some people still had a hard time finding something to work on and got really stressed.
(P.s. there was a person who copied art and gave it to you as a gift which was featured on your Instagram story, and the original artist was really upset about that. Be cautious!)
We are in no way angry with you or shitting on you, we just think these would be some things to consider when hosting the next septicart event! @therealjacksepticeye
Hey! I appreciate you taking the time and effort to write all of this out. Also for bringing it to my attention as it’s hard to get a feel for people’s thoughts with everyone saying different things at once. This is nice and concise!
1) Noted. I will work on that. I wrongly assumed because I showed them in the video itself that it was ok to use them for the thumbnails but I should definitely at the least have credited them. So I will work on that.
2) I will also work on this for the next time. Sometimes I save pieces off as I’m scrolling through a few days prior and forget to keep the name attached or to keep the profile in mind. That’s my bad and I will work on this too.
3) I will try my best to do this. I don’t have a huge amount of time day to day and recording the video itself takes up a huge chunk of time so I would always forego the description part due to how much longer it would take to get everything in order which would have delayed the whole process. I can see why this is wrong though and will definitely try to make a better effort next time. My only sustainable solution is to actually show the artists name or mention it better in the videos. Otherwise it’s incredibly hard to show a LOT of art but also citing said art too and collating it into a description. It becomes tedious and would only end up making the videos shorter as a result of not having the time. We’re still just a 2 man team doing all of this. Most YTers these days have 5+ people helping out. Not excusing my reason for doing so, just explaining my thought process behind it and why it slipped by :)
4) I definitely need to put more thought into how to filter through it all and make sure we don’t get repeats or spam. That’s another reason for why it’s all so messy. It started out as a fun idea but had no rails on it so it quickly got bloated and overwhelming. I want to make sure that each event is it’s own thing and people aren’t just resubmitting older ones or someone elses pieces. It ends up getting bloated and super difficult to find the new pieces.
5) This is something I’m struggling with but it always feels like it’s going to be a mess one way or the other. On one hand I get to show way more pieces by way more people that way and some of you can at least be in the video in SOME way but at the same time it goes against some of the other stuff mentioned here. It feels unfair then to those people to not get the full recognition like some other people do in the video and then I’d have to source every individual piece for the description in the end anyway. If I didn’t do that and just scrolled passed then it feels like I’m treating people way too differently and I really want to avoid that too. So this side of things needs more work as well. If people are ok with that then that’s awesome but I don’t think everyone will be on the same page, would love to hear more feedback on this part from people.
6) Stolen or copied art is a huge issue and one that I am never going to fully do properly. I try my best to never show art that is stolen or traced but it’s not always super apparent when that’s the case. I try to go through people’s profiles when I’m unsure to see if the style is consistent but sometimes it can slip through the cracks. I can only do so much from my end without making the entire process take even longer again.
I’ve also seen some people mention that I showed stolen art on IG from my shows and that’s even harder to detect IRL because I can’t reverse image search or cross reference then and there under even more time pressure. What it comes down to is the community and how honest/dishonest people are willing to be. I will still always try my best to avoid it but sadly it’s one of those things that will always be around.
Something that I’ve noticed while doing it though and would be really helpful to try mitigate the problem is watermarking. So many times people either don’t watermark at all or their watermark is illegible or from a completely different account than the one they post the image from. This makes it even harder to know if it’s a real piece or stolen so please be mindful when tagging and marking your work. Not just for septicart but in general :) Again I’m open to discussion on this too.
7) I will also try to give a stronger idea of what to do next time. It’s hard for some people to fall under certain topics though as people who do video edits or music can’t always do certain topics as easily as people who illustrate or animate. So I’m trying not to get TOO specific so I can leave some wiggle room in there for others. This also comes down to the individual who is participating and whatever I end up picking as a topic will always leave some people feeling lost or stressed on what to do.
At the end of the day, this is all for fun and to showcase the community and what everyone does together. I never want it to turn into some sort of competition or shoutout contest that people are “entering” to make it big or to get their shot. It will end up devouring itself if that’s the mentality people have for these events. Having said that, I know how frustrating it can be to not have your work credited ESPECIALLY if other people’s is credited in that exact same video so I will absolutely try harder in that regard.
Thank you for the feedback. I will keep my mind open to more of it as people respond. What I say in this reblog is not the be all and end all of my thoughts on this topic so keep it coming people and don’t be afraid to speak up :) (just keep it reasonable and civil!)
