Bye Alex..
I’m not meaning to say that is just talent, because what your team had… I’ve never really seen a team work that way together, with that kind of familiarity. -bites on her lip for a few seconds before looking over at the man in front of her and giving him a gentle smile- I got lucky, what I do works steadily within SWAT and dropping in on random teams when it is called for. It’s not the same for me and I do know that you’re there and having to deal with it. You’re going to know more than I ever will about something like this.
Spencer, with your brain? You have something that a lot of the agents will never have, you’re able to have opportunities that we can never have. -smiles softly- You could go into the private sector and consult or you could push to get in some type of management position so you can change the decisions that they can make. You have those options out there, it is just whether or not that is a route that you want to take.
-smiles softly before shaking her head and shrugging her shoulders- It is… well, it’s a family home, which is nice. -sighs softly and shakes her head again, trying to grasp at her words for a few long moments before running a hand through her hair and biting her tongue- It is a shift. And I don’t think I realized just what putting roots down meant and I didn’t really think it through all the way. Now I’ve got a teenager living with me, and everything is shifting so fast and she just… there’s something familiar about her and I haven’t been able to pinpoint it. I don’t know.
No, no. I think it is a good thing for you to have something familiar and stable to go home to. My apartment feels like that. Even if it is just an apartment. I don't think I'd want a house. Well..maybe if things were different. -An enigmatic smile curved the corners of his mouth up for just a moment then disappeared. Fingers found the strap of his bag across his chest and began to toy with it the longer they spoke. A curious set of brown eyes met hers, studying her as his brows arched.- You have a teenager living with you?
-He'd removed his opinions and thought about the FBI's decisions out of the conversation. Just as much as he attempted to remove his options, too. Focusing on them would do no good. He was a profiler. And that was precisely what he wanted to be. Now, if his superiors would get their heads on straight and realize their mistake, he would be much happier in the position he thought he'd be in for the rest of his life. But, he would rather do one hell of a Dodgeball Game away from the subject if it was brought up again. If for no other reason than fearing what he may or may not say next.-
Spencer, I get it… I agree. There’s a reason why the success rate that you guys had was unparalleled, and yeah… some of it had to do with the quality that was on the team but a whole lot of it had to do with the trust that each team had built. I don’t know if they thought that since Hotchner was moving to Section Chief that it would be a good idea just to sprinkle all the talent in other teams and add some new ones, or if it was just… them being over ambitious and trying to make up for the lost agents last year, but I agree with you.
I’m hoping now that they’re getting more agents in, or transfers from other offices around the country, and maybe it’ll settle, but… to be honest? I don’t know. I’m not included in those conversations, and even though I wish I had an answer for you, I would love to be settled down in one department without feeling like there’s a line that’s constantly being straddled. -chuckles and shakes her head, saving the apology off for a few seconds before shrugging a shoulder- Don’t apologize, not for something that you’re feeling because it’s valid.
Do, because it’s painfully dull around here these days. Though, thank god I don’t have to read all of those. Oh! I did buy a home while you were off in parts unknown, which is definitely weird.
Well, separating the talent as you put it was a horrible way to go about keeping that success rate up and solving the issues that arose from losing someone very important to us. It makes absolutely no sense and I think they've made a big mistake. Hopefully, they will realize that before we either lose members to them not wanting to be here anymore or even worse situations because they were sent out with new teams to whatever end these superiors were hoping for.
Personally, I go where I am told and I only do it because in most of those teams..there are faces that I remember and people there I want to protect. It makes it rather difficult to do that when they are scattered about. But what other options do I have, really? -his eyes met hers, cheeks flushed as they often did when he was getting too animated about a conversions, hands gesturing and fingers twitching at certain words to emphasize them- None.
Anyway.. -he caught himself, drawing in a breath and stopping his tirade before it got worse, she had to give him some amount of credit for putting a filter in where in the past the idea might never have even dawned on him that he needed one- Congratulations on your house. -he smiled and it was honest, real..happy for her that she had something stable to return home to.- I hope that you're settled in okay?
I think it has something to do with the whole floater status, not the best choice that they’ve had in the world, but it is something that at least keeps a steady rotation of people being where they’re needed. The departments just need to learn how to communicate with each other before they end up hospitalizing their own agents from pure exhaustion.
Or…. you know, at least instating some sort of hour limit in a month.
Anytime here would probably be advantageous for you, Reid… I don’t know the last time that I actually saw you around the Bureau, or popping your head in anywhere whether on duty or not. And if it’s been that long, can’t blame you for beginning to wonder why you have an apartment, probably easier to go through and put everything in storage and go from there.
Maybe? I'll have to think about it. I like this place too much to give it up and went through the paperwork to buy it. Seems more of a hassle to get rid of it than to just keep it around in hopes that one day things will get back to normal again.
I don't like what they did with the teams. Or the reassignments but I've made that abundantly clear, I'm sure, in the way I've spoken about them when approached for my opinion. I'll do what I need to do, of course, but I hope they get their act together soon and figure things out. Too much shifting around is putting a core team who works well together out of sorts and not giving us the support and the unity we had in the past may cost valuable research, work and most importantly..lives in the end. Not ours either, but the people we were able to save because we worked as one unit who knew our strengths, weaknesses, and all melded together to make up for or compliment each other.
But what do I know? -arches a brow and then as if he's catching the sour tone he began to take, smoothes his hands over his face and tries to blink it off.- Sorry..
I'll come by the Bureau later tomorrow afternoon. Promise. I need to dump off a suitcase full of reports. Hope they enjoy reading all those..
You know, I was beginning to think that Doctor Reid would never be back in the building at the rate that you’ve been going… you’re getting sent out on cases more often than you were with your previous team, aren’t you? -smiles softly- Glad to have you back in the DC area though, that’s for certain.
Are you at least glad to see your home for a little bit? Or have you been enjoying the open road?
I am beginning to wonder why I keep paying for an apartment at this rate. -smiles in return, his voice light to show he's only joking...sort of- But you're right. I think the Bureau fails to realize I've been booked back to back for a while now. Either way. It is good to be out there working.
Thanks for welcoming me back. It is good to be home.. I do like moving from city to city. I always have. But it would be nice to spend more time here. Hopefully, the caseload will slow down a little and I can stick around for a while?
It's hard to tell..
Not that I ever really use this thing other than when Garcia points out something I should look at, it seems the easiest way to contact everyone and let them know I am back in town having just landed on the flight back to D.C. from Miami. Even though I am way too wired to sleep, it's too late to call anyone but I wanted to let those who asked me to check in once I got back know everything went fine.
I'm not sure how long I'll be here but if anyone is up and sees this and wants to say hello, you know where to find me. At least for a little bit.
some drink to remember..some just drink Reid//JJ
Spencer gently closed the files he took home to work through as a distraction and sat back on the couch, lifting his hands and rubbing at his face to clear the words and images from his brain the best he could. A long exhale was breathed through the space between his wrists that waved back and forth as the heels of his palm dug into the hollows of his eyes. One last round and they shoved his hair back out of his face. Only to have it fall again, but this time he didn’t bother repeating the effort to keep it at bay. Lowering both hands, a jerk of pain ghosted up his right temple and he rubbed it into nothing with the pad of his thumb.
It was late. Beyond picking up the phone and calling people late. Besides Morgan and who knew what he was up to? Light brown eyes slid his stare at the orangish pill bottle that sat closed and untouched on the end table since the day he put it there after a brief doctor’s visit upon Hotch’s orders when he caught Spencer sitting in the dark one night at the office with his head in his hands and his fingers outstretched, rubbing his forehead. Hotch knew what it meant. No lying Spencer attempted to do would make him let up. Tonight? He was half tempted to take one if for no other reason than to chance having a dreamless sleep that’d finally take the edge off. Hopefully..
I need to get out of here..
The bar two blocks down from his apartment building was the last place he thought he’d end up at the beginning of the day. Yet here he was twenty minutes later, both Conversed feet hooked by the heels into the rungs on the stool and his knee on the leg opposite to the side he was hurt bobbing up and down. Long thin fingers stretched out over the top of a shot glass he had yet to even taste let alone empty. People came to these places to forget. He came here to mimic the same thing. Who knew? Maybe after a few of these, he wouldn’t have to fake it to himself anymore? Problem was..he had to get the nerve to swallow it down.
Right in the heart for Spencer and his mom. And a couple other people, too.
late night office work aka insomnia (Hotch/Reid)
There was something to be said for being a workaholic single father.
Few good things came from it; the only exception being getting to see the building in ways that no one else ever did. It was almost fantasical to walk the hallowed halls of the FBI building and imagine everyone who’d seen them before him; before the explosion that had rocked their world, and had taken the life of his brother. He could so clearly remember the way the building had looked before that fateful day, he turned down one particular hallway and paused at the memorial that had been designed and built in honor of the victims. He studied the names for a long moment, his hands tucked in his pockets before he turned and headed in the opposite direction in the hallway.
He’d been doing too much thinking since Spencer had left for Vegas as it was. Things had been difficult for them both the last few months. Case loads and jobs had conflicted and resulted in a long period of time where they hadn’t had much, if any, real contact. Jessica had noticed that Aaron was beginning to lose some of that light that had been beginning to dawn within himself and he knew that it was palpable that he was starting to fall back into old work habits of late nights, early mornings, not enough family time. The fact was, without someone to share those hours when Jack was asleep with, it just didn’t feel right being at home alone. The bed was so much bigger, so much more empty and he was finding himself lonelier and lonelier.
He paused as he passed the familiar glass walls of the BAU, his lips tilting up in a grin as he remembered all those years of working in that space and all the memories of watching his team bonding and growing while they sat at the desks that had seen too many faces come and go. He opened the door and stepped in, his hazel eyes ticking over the walls then pausing as they settled on a familiar form hunched over his desk with a cup of coffee on his desk. Aaron frowned and dropped his eyes to his watch before heading over and clearing his throat softly, not wanting to scare the young genius.
"As section chief, I have to admit the work ethic is impressive, Reid." His lips tilted up in a weak grin as he tilted his head and lifted his eyebrows, "As your friend I’m compelled to ask why you’re here at 2:30 AM on your day off." He sat on the very edge of the young man’s desk and tilted his head, "Everything okay?"
Spencer was completely "tuned out" as others might call it when, in fact, he was so "tuned in" that he didn't notice the movement out of the corners of his eyes until that movement took on a solid form of Aaron approaching his desk. He'd caught the glimpse right before he sat down on the edge, jerking his head up and thumbing his glasses up on his nose again instinctively. Two owlish eyes blinked once, twice and his mouth hung slightly open like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Okay, so that analogy would work better if the cookie jar consisted of Coroner's reports of several victims of the last case he worked on before he left. Topped with photos of the crime scenes that could serve as one hell of a gruesome icing on said cookie. Having been tapping away on the thick cardboard side of his coffee cup and skimming notes at the same time, Spencer's hand had been twisted into a spidery shape hunched over top of one long, endless line of text that filled up an entire page without any line breaks (thanks to whoever in the small town that typed that up!) and twitched just like the corners of his mouth did before they formed a full smile. His hand dropped down to rest on the paper and he shrugged.
"Y-yeah! Thanks! I mean, everything's great. I..uh.." Breaking eye contact with Aaron, he looked at the organized chaos that was his work spread out over his desktop and ran his tongue over his mouth before he snapped it shut with a thoughtful pout. A few of the pages were tucked away underneath each other, namely the photos under the case reports and a folder or two was shut before he looked back up and framed Hotch's face with his gaze. "It was late, didn't have much to do at home, thought I'd pass some time here..and.." Curiously, his head tilted to the side and his voice dropped to that bewildered whisper that said he was beyond confused. "Why are you up this late? Shouldn't you be at home?" Had he known Aaron was up? He might not even have come here..
Recently back from a trip home to see my mother. She’s doing very well if anyone was curious. Anyway, I’m sure the work piled up on my desk (no doubt with some slipped in by Morgan) and I think I’m going in for a late night to catch up before I’m actually due back at work in a couple days.
Before anyone says it, yes, I know I am still on vacation.
You’ve been deeply missed, Spencer.
I’m sure by the team, too.
I've missed you everyone, too. It's good to be back. Very good, actually.
late night office work aka insomnia (Hotch/Reid)
Coffee in hand from some convenience store on the way from where the cab dropped him off and the building, Spencer let himself into the otherwise empty office. Fingers from his opposite hand were twisted around the strap of his trademark brown leather satchel and he was wearing his glasses perched up high on the bridge of his nose. Not caring to really get dressed (not that some would call him taking the effort much of a change anyway), the genius' black Converse sneakers hitting the tile floor was the only sound to fill up the large, unoccupied room. His usual disheveled state the norm had chin length hair bouncing off the black frames and getting caught in the tops more than he'd like. Glaring up at the edge, he puckered his lips and blew them out of sight only to have them fall and have him promptly ignore them like he'd never noticed them in the first place. Or made an attempt to chase them away.
The flight back from Vegas had only reached land less than two hours ago and he'd got home, tossed down his suitcase and listened to the clock ticking on the wall for about a minute or so and decided an empty apartment wasn't where he wanted to be. Everyone was, no doubt, asleep and bothering them at this hour was out of the question. Least in his book. A couple of plastic bags from various shops containing souvenirs he promised to bring back for Jack and Henry (and maybe a couple for himself) were sat down on his sofa and he plopped down on the arm of it staring out through the windows at the skyline past his apartment.
Tick, tick, tick. The clock kept going, getting impossibly louder as the second hand rounded the bend for another turn. Two more and Spencer was at his computer. With a flick of his wrist, the screen popped into life. It still had the website he used to check in for his flight before he left sitting there. More attempts to fill the time with messing around on the internet had him bored to death and remembering why he hated computers within minutes. Too wired from flying (like that made a difference in his brain shutting off...it just didn't want to), too annoyed with the computer and without any real desire to watch something on television..there was one other thing he decided he could do.
Work.
Which brought him to the present moment of folding his too-skinny frame down onto the chair at his desk sitting with his legs folded into one another "Indian-style" in his chair as he flipped folder after folder open taking a peek inside to see what he missed. A brow raised over the frame of his glasses when he was fairly certain a couple of these were briefings of the case he missed while he was gone that he was "supposed to analyze and complete". Suspiciously gazing at those, he set them aside and started digging into his workload with one set of long fingers going through page after page and using the other to lift his coffee, take a sip, scrunch his nose like it bit him, then pick right back up again with another longer draw.
Got to love 7-11 coffee that's probably been sitting there for hours..
"The Reaper and The Zodiac Killer have never been arrested. The BTK Killer was only caught after 25 years because he went to the press to counter a book that said he’d died, moved away or been locked up, just like this one."
