ruby.
if there was one thing about ruby that most people didnât know from the surface, it was that she was a bookworm; if she got into a book that she loved, she wouldnât be able to put it down until it was finished. at that was why she was curled up in an arm chair at the back of the local bookstore, she hadnât even realised that time had moved on so much until the blonde came up to her. ruby jumped slightly, startled by the otherâs presence; but everyoneâs presence frightened her if she wasnât fully aware of her surroundings. âah, i hadnât realised iâd been sat here for that long,â ruby laughs softly, running a hand through her thick locks before looking down at the book in her hands. âyeah actually, although, itâs not the first time iâve read this to be truthful,â ruby laughs gently.
âYouâre all good, trust me, it hurts to pull someone away from a good book.â Spencer laughed. âBut, uh, you have been in here forâŠâ The blonde glanced at her watch. âThree and a half hours. That book must be pretty good.â She paused, realizing how creepy she sounded. âI donât normally track how long customers are in the shop but itâs been a really slow day. I think you may have been the fourth person to come in all day. Itâs kinda hard not to notice the people who come in on a slow day.â

ââSome LA BITCHES are ât h i r s t yâ as fuck wonât you say? I mean I get it. I do. This place takes a toll on you. There is an instagramable moment every fucking corner you turn or restaurant you walk in. But last night, I KID YOU NOT, a bitch was taking selfies at a busy road. Cars HAD to stop. If there wasnât a car in front of me I would have ran her down TO BE HONEST.  Are you really gonna risk dying for two extra instagram likes? SADââ
The blonde rolled her eyes. âI understand wanting to document important moments. Hell, they donât even have to be important. I get that too. But risking your life for a photo that you might not even use? That seems a tad excessive. And imagine the conversations that girl wouldâve had if she had gotten hit. Whenever someone asked what happened to her, she wouldâve had to tell them that she got hit by a car while posing for selfies in the middle of the road.â
ruby.
and sheâs having one of those days; where everything and everyone is getting on her nerves. she lets out a heavy sigh as someone steps in front of her. âwhat?â she snaps, before bringing her hand up to her forehead and rubbing at it. ruby usually feels guilty for snapping, but today - she doesnât care. she has writers block and the nightmares meant that she didnât get any sleep the night before, so sheâs bound to be irritable. âif youâre coming to have a go at me, donât.â
Spencer stepped back, startled by the girlâs angry voice. âShit, Iâm sorry.â She doesnât exactly know what sheâs apologizing for but she feels the need to be sorry. âI-I wasnât going to⊠Um, I just wanted to ask where you got your shirt?â She asks, gesturing to towards the girl. âItâs really cute and I⊠yeah.â Spencer trails off.
adelaide.
âGuess who got a thirty dollaâ tip tonight!â Adelaide danced through the lobby of the building in delight. All in all she had made not that much money for how many hours sheâd been there but when she discovered $30 on the table after they had paid she had almost cried. âMovinâ on up in the world!â
Spencer smiled at the Adelaideâs excitement. âHell yeah! You deserve those thirty dollars.â She replied. âYou know, the only thing that I really miss about waitressing is the tips. And getting free food. But mostly the tips.â

spencer: hey, do you maybe wanna grab coffee sometime this week?
spencer: i know that we haven't seen each other in a while & we haven't really talked since we were kids but like
spencer: idk, it'd just be nice to have someone who gets it, you know?
maggie.
typically maggie wouldnât go to a bookstore at all, ever, unless it was on a dare. It was when she finished work for the day that she decided that on a monday night there would be no party, no interesting event going on better to do. she had picked out a book, began to read it, and almost âdied of boredemâ. set to never waste an oppertunity to sleep, the girl went ahead and took a nap. âfuck.. what?â she asked groggily. âoh, uh.. yeah, sure.â she bit her lip and nodded, still trying to wake up. âtis? oh, god no. i think iâd rather just read the actual bible.â she joked. still, there was a twinge of annoyance in her voice.
Spencer tried to stifle a laugh at the girlâs confused tone. She had approached from behind and it had appeared as though the brunette had been engrossed in whatever book she had in her lap and hadnât responded at first because she was so focused on what she was reading but it was now blatantly obvious that the girl had been sleeping. âHey, in all fairness, that chair is really good for naps. Canât say that Iâve never been in the same position that youâre in now.â When the girl turned to face Spencer, she couldnât help but pause for a moment. She looked oddly familiar, yet Spencer couldnât place her finger on where she knew her. âAlright, this is going to sound a little strange, but have we met? I feel like I recognize you from somewhere.â

âwe met in the second foster home that I was placed in. she was around the same age as I & our foster parents were a little tight on space so we shared a room. we latched onto each other almost instantly. our parents had both been addicts which led to both of us being put into the system & in a strange way, we bonded over that. she had this terrible fear of thunder & lightning, so whenever there was a storm, we would push our beds together & everything would suddenly be okay. it was nice to know that no matter what happened, we would have someone in our corner. she got put into another home eventually. I never had a sister, but I imagine that was what having one would be like.â
mike.
Sitting down and looking at his youtube channel on his phone, Mike was feeling really bad when reading at all hateful comments and was also feeling really concerned for those people. Not even looking up though, and knowing someone was around, he just spoke to them, whoever this was. âI donât get it, why does people are being hateful in the comments section? If you donât like a YouTuber you can just go and find other videos of some other people instead of trying to bring someone down, right?â
When Spencer heard the voice, she looked up from the battered copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray that she had buried her nose into. The (most likely rhetorical) question had come from the boy looking at his phone behind her. She recognized him from the apartment complex and was pretty sure she had seen a few of his videos. âThe way I see it, people who feel the need to leave hate comments from behind the protection of their phones are usually the same people who only have ten followers and  have to put other people down to make themselves feel big.â The blonde replied absentmindedly. âItâs kinda sad, really.â

Spencer: are you safe? do you need me to come pick you up?
achilles.
they hadnât noticed how long theyâd been out of it.  the book they were flipping through was much too good to just put down after reading the synopsis.  the only way they could possibly describe it was a quote from catcher in the rye: what really knocks me out is a book that, when youâre all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like.  that was exactly how the book they were reading felt like.  it was also the reason they flinched the slightest at the suddenness of spencerâs voice.  achilles hastily scrambled to stand up from the armchair.  â  sorry.  â  they were a bit too quick to apologize.  her question caught them off guard and they diverted their gaze to the closed cover of their book.  â  uh,  the stranger by albert camus.  quite alluring.  definitely a page turner.  â  the smallest hint of a smile lingered on their mouth.  â  i could probably talk about it for hours,  but youâve got a shop to close down, donât you  ?  â
Spencer automatically took a step back when the other person turned to face her. âSorry.â She said with a smile, feeling bad for startling them. âI didnât mean to take you by surprise.â The small girl stood and listened as they told her about the book that they had been reading all afternoon. She let out a small laugh at his (possibly unintentional) pun about the book being a page turner. âWell, we arenât called Page Turners Books for nothing.â The Stranger. She had read that a few years ago and enjoyed it. âOoh, I liked that one. Have you read anything by Kurt Vonnegut? If youâre into books about existentialism and philosophy, his stuff would be right up your alley. Slaughterhouse-Five is probably one of my favorites books of all time.â She told them before pausing to think for a moment. âWell, if you wanna keep me company and talk to me about books while I close up, Iâm cool with that.â Spencer offered with a smile.

maggie: u wanna hear a bad joke?
maggie: yes u do . knock knock
spencer: oh boy. on a scale of one to ten, how bad is this joke?
spencer: fine, I'll bite.
spencer: who's there?
daisy.
daisy: i think you just became my favorite person
daisy: donât tell adelaide that i said that though.
spencer: my lips are sealed spencer: so besides a terrible lack of coffee, what are you up to?
daisy.

daisy: you: thereâs no coffee
daisy: me, an intellectual: iâm going to die.
spencer: donât worry
spencer: iâm on my way with a espresso & a can-do attitude

she flipped roughly through a magazine, jaw clenched and eyes glazed in annoyance. âimagine being proposed to in public, declining which youâre allowed to, and have strangers boo you and throw trash at you? i mean, god, when will society let women say no?â she ripped off a page on accident, and sighed. âsorry, how is your day going?â
Spencer couldn't help but roll her eyes at the girl's statement. "It's ridiculous." She agreed. "Men see women as property that they're entitled to and if a woman - god forbid - actually stands up for herself, people treat her like a fucking pariah. It's disgusting. Plus I always thought that the whole public proposal thing seemed like a way to make it harder for women to say no." The blonde shook her head. "Anyways, my day's been alright. What are you up to?"

âthe first thing that he told me was that he wanted me to call him dad. none of my foster parents had ever wanted me to call them mom or dad before. everything seemed perfect, but over time, things started to change. he would be angry a lot when he came home from work and when he was angry, he drank and when he was drunk, he got violent. heâd make comments about how pretty I was. I should have known that it was too good to be true, but I had already let my guard down; that was my first mistake.â
