↳Yrra Cynril/Fatality
First Appearance:
Green Lantern vol.3 #83 (February 1997)
as Star Sapphire: Green Lantern Vol. 4 #36 (January 2009)
in the New 52: Green Lantern: New Guardians #1 (November 2011)
Who is she?
Fatality is the Star Sapphire of Space Sector 1313. Her journey to taking on the violet ring was a long and arduous one, filled by suffering inflicted on her by others and her causing them pain in return. She is the last survivor of the planet Xanshi. As a member of the royal family she had been sent to the planet Okaara to train under its warlords and become a warrior.
Her training was hard and unforgiving, but the knowledge of her friends and family waiting for her at home was a comfort to her – one that she lost as a mistake made by Green Lantern John Stewart lead to the complete obliteration of her home. Seeking revenge but not knowing which Green Lantern is to blame she decided to kill every ring bearer present and past. She taught herself fighting techniques and acquired weapons far exceeding the ones offered by the warlords and could go toe to toe even with veteran Green Lanterns. In her quest she showed extreme brutality and relentlessness, collecting a vast variety of disturbing trophies taken from the defeated Lanterns.
For a considerable time she was one of Kyle Rayner’s main rogues causing the young Lantern and his friends a world of trouble. During one of their encounters she proved she would rather have them both dead than save herself and Kyle. Their fights lead to her loosing both arms (not to Kyle – one to a tentacle monster who joined the scuffle and another to an exploding yellow ring she got from the Weaponers of Qward) and being imprisoned at the Slab (a penitentiary for metahumans in Antarctica). Yet, she never gave up, returning constantly with an improved arsenal. Finding out John was responsible for the tragedy of Xanshi drove her on even further.
While she’d shown herself as merciless she did have a sense of honour and rules she set for herself. When John Stewart found himself in a wheelchair thinking it was due to physical injury, she used her ability of recognizing weak spots in a body to tell him his problem was psychosomatic, as she wanted him to be in peak condition while they fought.
When a Sinestro Corps ring chose her she jumped at the opportunity to finally complete her vengeance but little did she know that her short stint in the Sinestro Corps would end up with her captured by the Star Sapphires and put in a mind altering crystal. The crystal allowed her to let go of her anger and start on a path of redemption, joining the ranks of the Star Sapphires herself and even forgiving John Stewart and falling in love with him. She shows the same kind of relentlessness in her new mission, exemplified by trying to cure Bleez (a Red Lantern) from her rage even though Bleez was a direct threat to Yrra’s life.
Yrra’s drive and strength currently make her a valuable ally to the Green Lanterns and a hero in her own right. For a time she even belonged to an informal team made up from members of different Corps – the New Guardians. And while one might argue that the Sapphires “brainwashed” her her personality of a warrior is very much the same, and the love now motivating her, had always been there beneath all her rage.
What can she do? / What makes her unique?
Yrra is one of the strongest warriors in the whole universe (an expert martial artist and weapons specialist) and that coupled with her powers as a Star Sapphire (flying, limited invulnerability, constructs and limited teleportation) makes her a force to be reckoned with by members of all corps. In the past she had shown herself capable also of wielding a Yellow Ring and even a Green one, proof of her ability to instill fear in others and her great willpower and own fearlessness.
Fan Reception / Position in the franchise:
Yrra has been around since the mid 90s first filling the role of a villain and now a hero. She’s been popular ever since her first appearance which caused her to be a recurring star of various Green Lantern titles and even a couple of titles outside the GL franchise. What makes her memorable is her strong personality and unique character design. She is also one of the very rare examples of black aliens (aside from her elven ears she looks like a black woman) in the DC universe, filled mostly with white ones or alternately ones with skin in fantastic colours (green, blue, pink, orange, etc.).
