Gun Violence Reduction Resources Act of 2016

This bill is called the Gun Violence Reduction Resources Act of 2016. It asks for 200 additional agents and investigators to be hired in different areas to enforce gun laws. The reasoning behind this bill is that many people including police or other officers die each year or get injured because of guns. According to the bill, 40 percent of guns are sold to the purchaser without through background checks. I feel like this bill would be effective, but would 200 agents really make a difference? Even if it didn't make that much of a difference if a few more officers would still be good for the safety of the country. And if every year 200 additional officers were introduced into the system, it would actually (though slowly) would make a difference.

History of Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies was written in 1954. During the time people were recovered from World War 2 and the Cold War was just beginning. William Gould had also served in the Royal Army during WW2 so that might've also influenced the book. In the book, a handful of children (all boys) from different school are being evacuated from their area on a plane. Then somewhere during the flight, their plane is shoot down and the boys land miraculously on an uninhabited island, thus beginning the story. This reveals that their world had ongoing warfare of a sort outside of their island. Lord of the Flies simulates a conflict between two objectives or forces and how that develops into a small war. This affects the characters since in the beginning are friendly though somewhat scared and how they grow into very different people throughout the story.

This bill is mainly about ensuring gun safety and storage to prevent access to guns by people who could misuse them.

I think this bill has a good idea but execution could prove difficult because of money and training and such.

Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act

The Lord of the Flies novel is filled with somewhat graphic descriptions of death and violence. Not necessarily domestic violence or any other specific category of violence and/or assault, but the book definitely deals with some a magnitude of readings involving death and violence. The bill I chose to blog about isn’t directly related to Lord of the Flies, but on the subject of violence and some other aspects, it is.

The Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Protection Act is meant to serve the purpose of, as stated in the title, protection against Domestic Violence, and violence in general. The bill proposes to amend Title 18 of the United States Code, which deals with federal crimes and criminal procedure. First off, the bill proposes to expand the definitions of “intimate partner” and “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence”, which currently is defined as “...the use or attempted use of physical force or threatened use of a deadly weapon as an element”. The expansions include adding a current or former dating partner into the definitions of both “intimate partner” and “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence”. Basically expanding the protection of Domestic Violence Victims who are or where abused by their dating partner(s).

The second part of the bill is proposing to prohibit any means of trading, or possession of a firearm from a person who is on a temporary restraining order. The details involved with the Bill are described in the link below. Currently the bill only has an estimated 1% chance of making it past committee, although the chance of making it past committee for any bill is extremely difficult.

I personally support this Bill, and believe that it will only strengthen the needed support towards Domestic Violence Victims (in this case, specifically against cases involving abusive dating partners). The Bill seems to have very little that would have a overall negative effect on the lives of people involved with domestic violence; with some exception of the restraints it has on abusive partners, but I think those restraints are necessary. I personally support the majority of gun control acts, and this is one of them

Historical Influences in Lord of the Flies

The Author of Lord of the Flies has been highly influenced by World War II, having served in the British Royal Navy, and being involved in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. The novel was also written in 1954, during the sparking of the flame that grew to become the Cold War. Due to this, and the nature and recurring themes of the book, it is apparent that war has most likely influenced the writing of the book quite a bit. These themes that occur in the book include, but are not limited to paranoia (as referenced in the book by the constant fear of the “beastie”), which was very apparent in the minds of American and Russian civilians during the Cold War. Another theme is the tendency to lean towards violence (as referenced in the book by Jack, the hunters, and the general inevitable violence of the children), which is obviously apparent in the very definition of war itself: “a state of hostility, conflict, or antagonism”. A final theme included in the book is the desire for order and political structure (as referenced in the book by the conch, the meetings, and the fire), which is the main overall goal of the aftermath of war, especially the Cold War and World War II.

Historical Inspiration of Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of English schoolboys marooned on a tropical island after their plane is shot down during a war. The writer, William Golding, joined the Royal Navy in World War II, after the war he had an outlook of what war was like, the savagery of humans but also the peacefulness of people as well. Then once the cold war came around, with the threat of nuclear annihilation, the US and Russia had a standoff, espionage and secrecy was common in this time. In the beginning of the book it tells how the boys were on the plane in an attempt to escape a war and bombings, they got shot down and paranoia ensued after some time. The kids broke into factions and started to argue between each other, some wanting peace, others acting for anarchy. Resemblances to the Cold War and World War II are present in the book and I believe that World War II and the Cold War had influence/inspired the writing of this book.

This article was about recent studies, showing possible evidence of genetics and evolution playing a large role in the human habits of violence. One of the examples the article gives is the violent nature of animals such as chimpanzees, who can cause violent raids against other chimpanzees, which has a strong relationship with the evolution of the human race. The article believes that, much like the chimpanzees, the early humans and human ancestors faced recourse competition; while other animals who had less resource scarcity, evolved more peacefully. The article also points to archeology and other branches of science for evidence of certain violent genes.

Political instability and ISIS attacks are causing turmoil in the nation.

Turkey is reacting to ISIS by stopping many potential terrorist plots. However, they weren't able to prevent a suicide bombing on 10 German tourist in Istanbul on Tuesday. Some ISIS attacks are also aimed at the PKK and Kurdish people. The Turkey goverment is responding with violence to the terrorist groups.
