I remember talking with my ex's parents about wages and the ability to talk freely about how much you're being paid by an employer (which is a legal right where I live). Their response was like "well, yeah, technically it's legal to talk about your wage, but we'll still look down on you for it and you may be passed over for promotion or even fired for some other reason over it."

And when I asked why they said it was because if the people who had been with the company knew how much more the new hires were making relative to them, they'd demand raises.

So I asked whether the pay for new hires was the fair market rate, and they said yes. And I asked if the long term employees would make that if they changed to a different company. They said yes. So I asked if it was beneficial to the company to maintain the same staff over longer periods, and they agreed this was of value to the company.

So I said, then you agree that you should give raises your most beneficial employees--those with the most knowledge and experience, who have been with the company long term. And actually it's good that wage comparisons get made, so the employees know what they are worth and can make sure they're being paid appropriately and not taken advantage of by billion and trillion dollar companies.

And they said no, because if everyone did that it wouldn't be a billion dollar company anymore, and the company wouldn't survive.

They genuinely couldn't see that it could be beneficial, since it's all a numbers game. Pay less per head is better, because profit number bigger, even though it's actually worse because you have more employee turn over and less internal stability. But all that matters is profit number go up.

If the only way it can survive is underpaying its workers, then it doesn’t deserve to. Not to mention no one understands long term profitability. It’s all big numbers right now.
