âIf getting held back wasnât bad enough, the girl of my dreams is my competition.â -Richard âSpikeâ Harold, 19, Senior
For Richard being the fourth generation in his family to travel down the well beaten path of music sounds like itâd be a walk in the park but it only makes trying to find his own musical style all the much harder. Spike, as he prefers to be called, would rather you know him as front-man of Orderly Danger and occasional deejay versus know him as the great grandson of a string orchestra sheet music writer, or the grandson of a well respected music professor at UCLA. He even keeps it a secret that back in his fatherâs own late teens and twenties, he was in a semi-famous band of his own. Itâs not that he isnât proud of musical talent he comes from or the men who passed down the love of music onto him, he just doesnât want their legacies to interfere with the legacy heâs determined to create on his own.
It was his freshman year that things went a little helter skelter. The beginning of the year was phenomenal, a stage name was bornâhe stopped answering to Richard and became Spikeâand he started up a band to go along with it. Orderly Danger became his first and only priority as he worked hard to get his feet wet in the music world. Eventually, his devotion to build up the band lead to Spike finding himself completely under water as freshman year drew to a close and the faces that had surrounded him daily in class moved on to their sophomore year while he found himself held back.
Music has always been and would always be one of the more important factors to Spikeâs life but that first year of high school taught him that unless he learned how to balance and manage his time, he was setting himself up for disaster. Over the next two years, he did everything he could to get his educational career back on track before reforming Orderly Danger with all new members. Sure, they werenât they the best band right away but what brand new band still learning how to mesh together is? They werenât the âitâ musical entertainment for any of the school events but Spike didnât let that shake his confidence in himself or his band-mates. They could be just as good as Kira and Hectic Glow, if not better. They didnât have the fancy studio space readily available or the well-talked about reputation that could earn them a spot on Warped Tourâs roster but Orderly Danger had something that Spike thought was more valuable and important than any of thatâ They had heart and they had passion. And for Spike, that was good enough and just what he needed to believe that with a lot of hard work, late nights, broken guitar strings and flying drumsticks, his and Orderly Dangerâs musical path would open before their very feet.

Dear future me,
So you finally did it. I canât believe it. Iâm proud of you.
Youâve come a long way, Rich. From claiming your favorite color because of the pair of under bottoms your crush woreâturquoise was always an ugly fucking color, reallyâto carrying your band from the small stage to Austin, Texas at SXSW. I want you to know that it took a lot to get you where you are now. There were people, there were tears, there were laughs, there were upsets and disappointments, there were disagreements, there are memories. You didnât wake up where you are now. You worked to get there. You worked your ass off and you live every moment of what you receive because of it Richard. I donât care if you have every Grammy in your hands, I donât care if youâve got Jay-Z or Kanye West or Rihanna on speed dialâif you ever forget those people, if you ever forget where you came from you may as well slap your own self in the face.Â
I hope youâre everything I always dreamed of. I hope youâre doing everything everything I said I would do while sitting in through a second freshman year. Donât disappoint me. Donât disappoint Dad. Donât disappoint the people who are out there rooting for us.Â
You might not be Jay-Z or Kanye but I bet one day someone will be saying that they arenât Spike.
Make us proud, Richard âSpikeâ Harold
A smile touched on Cadenâs lips before he readjusted the bag on his shoulder and began to close the distance between him and Spike. Burning the other male into memory as he approached, there was a heavy feeling already settling into his bones but Caden knew this was for the best. Spike was getting out of this place and kicking down doors. He was grabbing the key when it was presented to him and unlocking his chance so deep down, Caden couldnât let himself really deem it as Spike leaving him. It wasnât him he was leaving, it was a location. People stayed with you in heart, memory and spirit, Caden was learning that for himself a lot lately. Slowing, he stopped in front of him, feeling a rise in his throat and a sting in his eyes once more. âI knowâŠI know we havenât completed the transaction butââ Offering out a hand, there was an audible lump in his throat as he continued. âItâs been a pleasure doing business with you, Metal Man.â His words finalized a business arrangement but his tone thanked him for a friendship and cemented the bond that Caden was assured knew no limited location.
With no hesitance Spike took Cadenâs hand, slapping his palm into the other boyâs and shaking back firmly. His grin fell to a smile, capturing one last glimpse of this moment with Caden the most he could. Spike was unimaginably grateful to have met Caden, to know and seen the good and bad, be the other brother both boys needed. But the most of all it was the share of the  that Spike knew wouldnât end with his departure. Leaving Caden behind would be hard, but Spike wouldnât have it be for too long. Heâd be back to see him, to see them all. And in between heâd definitely check in with every social media site he knew he could find them all on. But for now, with a hard swallow and an enlightening smile he nodded to the other.Â
âThe pleasure has always been mine, Hammer head.â Â Â

âThereâs a few worseâŠ.but weâll make it work. Three hours isnât too bad and I meanâŠwe always stay up nearly all night anyways so maybe weâll be okay.â Sniffling every so often, she was trying to convince herself of her own words. They could do it. Itâd get hard sometimes but it had gotten hard for them in the past and there they still were. Still together, still going strong. Eyes still wet, she blinked rapidly to clear them as fresh tears sprang up and her smile showed how happy his words made her heart. âNo matter where.â Isla vowed as a promise of her own. âBottom of the barrel or top of the New York Times Best Seller list, thereâs no one I want to ever be with besides you.â Laughterâdeep, loud and true laughter rang out at the Pinkie Pie Swear. Eyes lit up with both happiness and dimmed with sorrow at the same time, Isla did her best to push it all away as she lunged for him. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she kissed all over his face as she began falling backwards on the couch, Jovi letting out an annoyed huff as he vacated his spot and moved out of the way. Laughter mixed in with her words as they fell, the last of her words came hand in hand with her back hitting the couch where she only held him tighter to her and found his mouth with hers as the hourglass of time turned and slowly began to trickle down. âCross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in myâAAH!â
Hand over his heart, Caden let out a gasp so overexaggerated that he nearly choked with it. âYou better be showing how big the screen is and not how large you see my ass as!â Huffing, there was a smile on his face as he began to follow Spike before his steps slowed and he just watched him walk ahead for a minute. Another one was leaving butâŠthis one was different at least. âS-spike?â Voice thicker than he liked, Caden swallowed down as he tried fighting the stinging burn of his eyes. âThanks for uhâŠfor saying goodbye.â
Not catching the sound of Caden's voice right away Spike swiveled around coolly ready to meet some sarcastic comment or, upon noticing their slight distance, a comment about his behind. When the words hit his ears though it broke his heart knowing the reasons behind him saying that, but smiling gratefully for the reason Caden thanked him. "I wouldn't have it any other way." Spike nodded with a warmer tone and a strong thumbs up before the grin returned on his face.
The once sacred ball player to ball player handshake that he and Spike had built after a very convincing argument on Spikeâs part about Caden being a baseball snob brat if he didnât give Spike an honorary one had once been a bit sloppy during the beginning but now, it was executed perfectly. Flaw free. And that only showed Caden just how far him and Spike had come in the past seven months. Nimbly sidestepping afterwards, Caden laughed as he turned halfway to face Spike. âIâm still anticipating the day you try and sneak in an ass slap.â He joked before going to retrieve his bag. âC'mon letâs go complete this deal.â
Right after they finished Spike let out an elated laugh, their motions almost instinctive with the next move before the handshake was entirely over. No wobbling, no moves done too early, it was the smoothest one Spike could remember them having. He held on a little longer before letting go, perked up from the energetic bro shake. "Nah, that's because i'm waiting until they can catch us on camera doing that. A big huge jumbotron of me smacking your ass." He mapped out the size of said jumbotron with his hands before hitting Caden's arm and turning to leave. "Sure. C'mon. Before they actually DO melt in the trunk of my car." Spike laughed taking the lead this time to leave.
A sound rumbled in her throat when she felt his lips against her forehead. âMaybe,â She began softly at first, giving it a moment before she continued as she let her face rest in his hands. âIf you hold off on forehead kisses for a few more minutes.â A watery laugh sounded as Isla thought of the many times she had jokingly bitched at Spike for kissing her forehead after she had noticed a slight trend in most of the times he did it. âRight.â Isla confirmed gently, her eyes locked with his. âWe knewâŠ.we knew this would happen one day. After this summer, after we graduateâŠwe knew and weâve still pushed on despite that. Fallen more in love knowing that our time together physically was going to come to a pause eventually. I justâŠI thoughtâŠ.â Trailing off, she looked away. âI just thought we had a bit more time. ButâŠâ Unable to stay looking anywhere that wasnât Richard, Isla returned her gaze to his. âYou canât control time, huh?â A large breath taken in, she let it out shakily before righting herself up. âIâm proud of you, I really really am.â Wiping away stray tears that had fallen since his cleaning of her face, she next too his hands back in hers and squeezed as tight as she could. âIâm not going anywhere. Iâll be hereâstill loving you, still waiting to be with you again. ItâŠit sucks, it does. But at the same time this is what youâve always worked towards and I knew that going into this so thatâs not going to be my reason I go out. Not being with you for Prom is going to suck, not havingâŠnot having our Tuesdayâs or our McDonaldâs runs anymore is going to really fucking suck butâŠ.â Looking down at their hands, she shook her head. âBut Iâm in if youâre in. Iâm in for the tears. The missing you. Iâm in for the terrible timezone difference, the calls and texts. Iâm in for the random visits, Iâm even in for flying to you if I must. Iâm in it for the end. Iâm in it for you. Iâm not giving up just because I canât see you every day or just because you arenât just a few minutes drive away. Donât give up on me and Iâll never give up on you. I never did so why would I start now?â She wanted to get back to hearing about it all, maybe go back for a second look at his vision board now that she knew but she needed him to know that when push would come to shove, she would hold on instead. âIf you still want me once youâre out there, youâll have me. I can promise you that.â
âDonât even get me started on the timezone. Serious itsâitâs the worst timezone on the planet.â Spike complained but a laugh went free at the tail end of his sentence. He was wiping his face with his wrist though he wore a smile despite the tears. He wasnât sure why tears were falling so. He wasnât sad anymore, not after her words, but it wasnât a full on happy feeling that he felt either. Still, the idea that theyâd work through it, that they wouldnât give up on one another, and do their best to  get through the painful struggle of a long distance relationship touched his heart more. What he felt now was the precise mix of a bittersweet feeling. âOf course I still want you. Here, there, anywhere I go,â he was going to go on before stopping himself short. He stuck his chest out and with a breath made the corresponding motions with his next words. âCross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye!â he crossed his heart, fluttered his hands at his sides as if he were flying, and then--his favorite part done by the infamous Pinkie Pie herself--made a motion as if he were smashing a cupcake into his eye.
For a moment, Caden just looked at Spikeâs fist, his face unreadable before he slowly smiled. Shaking his head, he lifted himself up off the ground before turning and extending a hand down to help Spike up after stretching feeling cramped from how heâd been sitting. âCome on, if weâre gonna do it we gotta do it right.âÂ
Eagerly standing up with Caden's help he dusted himself off a bit. Then he held his fist out again with a huge grin on his face.

Knock knock. âRichard iâm kinda hungry do you wanna go---I thought you said you were unpacking in here already.â âI had started to...â â....oh...is that your....you finished it!â âYeah.â âWow. I didnât think you were going to actually go home and finish it....itâs great. Way detailed than mine was, haha.â â.....â â...Richard?â â....â âRich...â âI-Iâll miss them. I-Iâll miss all of them and everything so damn much. We were amazing. We were...we were a team.  I learned from each of them, they learned from me. They were my team, my next family. Home was...home when I was there with all of them.  But..but---! Thereâs no such thing as goodbyes. Only see you laters. Weâre all growing up. Weâre all moving forward to our dreams. Thatâs why I put all of them on here. They are apart of this. Theyâre my vision. And one day weâll all be living all of our dreams.â â...Hey...Iâm proud of you. I know how hard leaving home behind is. How do think I felt leaving you when I moved? But you know what? Home is never that far away. Neither are these guys either...understand? ...Good. Now. I think this would look great on that wall right over there....â
âWell,â Caden laughed after running through his mental list of current standings. âAbout as good as the team currently in last place in the AL West division can be.â Thinking of Spike heading to a game made him smile for a moment before it faded a bit, the boy realizing this all meant he had one more empty seat watching him in the stands this upcoming season. Scratching at his jaw again, he looked back to him after a pause. âYou can only go and watch butts just as long as you donât find one you like more than mine.â Dropping his hands to dangle between his legs, Caden puffed out his cheeks before expelling the breath in a hard shot of air. âI could really use some of chocolateâs natural antidepressants right about now.âÂ
"Oh. So not too bad," nodding as if he knew what Caden was talking aboutâ whatever that all meant  but last place registered enough for him to make the snide remark. Then his grin was back again. "Deal," he raised his fist up for one more of those fistbumps he and Caden had. The ones supposedly so unique that each player on a baseball team had their own and he and Caden had long abused the one they had created.Â
Dear Tom
Iâm so scared. Iâm scared, iâm nervous, iâm worried that this was a bad idea. Itâs different when you go out of town for awhile and knowing youâve got people and family and a place to go back to. But here we donât know anyone. Itâs starting off new and itâs terrifying. I think you understand thatâŠthatâs why you left everything that you knew and all that you built up to start over with meâŠdidnât you? Iâm glad that I get to be with you all the time again. Iâm glad that, even after our worse argument ever, I know iâve always got my brother. I have faith that  I can do this because I have you, Tom. Hereâs to  writing our newer chapter together and starting all over.
