THEY STOLE MY "FO" ?
Its the foo fighters, they were caught in the act tho
I'm not named after the foo fighters, but we're both named after the same foo
Tumblr is escalating, your whole "Foo" is gone now
Since I keep seeing people tag posts with WHAT IS THIS GAME, it's Juggling Lab. It's a free program for Windows/Mac/Linux:
It's not really a game, it's a program for visualizing and tweaking juggling patterns, but it's got amusing graphics (they're 3d but rendered with a 2D api, it's wild) and a wild UI.
Using it is... complicated. I can't give you a guide. But yeah this is it.
I had a vague memory of having a vector stickman juggling simulator on my Palm Pilot, and when I saw that Juggling Lab had been in development since 1997, I thought maybe it had a port. But after a bit of research I think I must have had JuggleMaster.
I don't really have a point to this story except holy shit, two cakes
Computer Chronicles - Internet Showcase Special Part 1 (2000)
LGR did a whole video about this computer and its pizza button! It's real!
Oh hey I worked on this thing at my first programming job! I kept one but the screen got busted in a move many years ago, so I don't have it anymore.
IIRC if you plugged the i-opener keyboard into a regular PC, you would discover that the pizza key is really just the Windows key with a better label. The OS was rigged up to respond to it by launching papajohns.com. I don't think they even had a special deal with them or anything.
Unfortunately the pizza computer was doomed by their business model, which was to sell these things at a loss at retail computer stores, and make money with special dial-up internet subscriptions, that you needed to sign up for in order to make it do anything. This was a doomed idea to begin with, since dial-up really only had a few more years to live, but then nerds figured out that these things were just regular PCs inside, and all you had to do was plug in a hard drive with a special cable to turn them into very nice, extremely cheap Linux boxes, and that was very much the end of that.
So I'm working on a project that'll let me make my own Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego games, right? Like I'd be able to swap out the locations and hints for them with my own locations and hints.
So the thing I've not figured out yet is: what do I use for my proof of concept? Because obviously I'm gonna make a demo game to show the power of my project!
But I'm not sure what to do. Star Trek seems an obvious choice but planets in Trek aren't super distinctive and interesting most of the time.
I guess I could do, like, Azeroth or Skyrim. I'm not super enthusiastic about either.
You could port over the Dante's Inferno-themed Where In Hell Is Carmen Santiago
https://archive.org/details/a2_where_in_hell_is_carmen_santiago
The people at the hardware stores weren't very helpful so I had to do it myself, but at least I finally can get my Christmas lights plugged in!
is that cat5 cable? i swear it looks like cat5. the jacket shape is weird.
Nah it's some stranded 12AWG speaker wire
Ah, so the cable is basically its own fuse! Clever
USA 1993
Brix is a weird game. I played it as a kid and thought it was great, but it's almost an exact port of Puzznic. An unauthorized one that never mentions Puzznic.
Once when I was, like, 12, I was at Magicland, which was an incredible arcade in my hometown that put every machine on free play and charged by the hour. They had a Puzznic machine tucked away in the back with a bunch of less popular machines, and I was like, oh shit! That's Brix, I love Brix. So I played for a while, breezing through the early puzzles I already knew, and I was like, huh, the arcade version of Brix has pictures of women in it? It sure seems like, each time I beat a level, the woman has less clothing on, but there must be a limit to that. They wouldn't make an arcade game with naked people in it! And even if they did, Brix would be a deeply weird game to put naked people in! Why would you put naked people in an abstract puzzle game? And besides, even if for some bizarre reason they DID do that, surely they wouldn't put it where a 12-year-old boy could play it.
Long story short, yes they would, and the instant that a nipple appeared on the screen I ran out of the room, fast as my prepubescent legs would take me, terrified that someone might have seen me and I'd get in unimaginably deep trouble for playing Brix With Boobs. In the end, no one noticed. You're the first person I've ever told, Tumblr.
Epilogue: years later, as a teenager, I released "puzz" for the Gameboy in a homebrew gamedev contest, in order to score a free flashcart. It is a port of a totally different abstract puzzle game that originally had boobs in it, and I was like, this is a pretty fun puzzle game, I wish I could play it with my bedroom door open.
I think we should teach David Lynch how to use RPGMaker and see what happens
IT'S TIME FOR A NEW DEATH GENERATOR! With something between like two weeks and 6 years in the making, it's Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the GBA! (2004).
This one required SO MUCH FUCKING WORK. Like, I've partially disassembled the game, patched out dozens of functions to change how it renders, had to use two different emulators (including porting functionality from one to the other), and ran the game (automatically) approximately two thousand times. And then to name the characters, I had my lovely wife @mrsfoone do a spreadsheet that listed them all and matched 'em up with the 241 faces in this silly, silly game.
Even if you've not played the game, this is a fun one to play with: There's all kinda of Final Fantasy and Disney characters in here.
The Death Generator
EDIT: forgot to add: If you enjoy the Death Generator and want to support me working on it, I've got both a ko-fi where you can tip me a couple dollars, and a patreon where you can set up a monthly donation. Thanks!

I saw this post at 5:00 in the morning and dismissed it as a fever dream and I scroll to find it was real
i’m so glad earth only has one moon, if there were more i’d have to pick a favorite and that sounds too emotionally taxing to even fathom
hey so funny thing about this
Can only accurately reblog this addition until November 25, 2024.
It is ENTIRELY fucking unreasonable that, simply based on the structure and specificity of these posts, I found myself suddenly 95% convinced that if I typed “earth two moons” into google, right now, I would definitely find a credible news article confirming that EARTH HAS TWO FUCKING MOONS. Like only 5% of me was like “I have to be the dumbest motherfucker alive” as I’m doing that search.
I now suspect you could convince me of basically anything just by posting a picture of Dean saying it under a tearful Castiel. I am not immune to propaganda, if it takes the form of nerds gleefully shitposting on tumblr dot com.
Your mileage may vary based on what you define as a moon, but you can indeed look up “earth two moons” and find credible articles, as we currently have a second rock orbiting us, asteroid 2024 PT5!
Oh yeah, to be clear, I'm mad because I was RIGHT, and I can't think of a less reasonable way I could have learned this information

About Newspaper Comics
An ask cross-posted from Cohost, which is not long for this world.
Anonymous User asked: I would like to know your opinions about newspaper comics
This is a very choose your own adventure kind of question. Am I meant to speak about the art or the business of newspaper strips? The current state of newspaper comics or their century-spanning history? Stream of consciousness it is.
Newspaper comics were the original dream for me before all other dreams. I fell in love with Garfield and the story of its success, and wanted to make a syndicated strip at an early age. Later, I fell in love with Calvin and Hobbes - itself a lesson in craft, history and business - and abandoned the syndication dream for “art by any means necessary”, and dove into webcomics. (There were a few more steps along the way, but that’s the basic trajectory and not uncommon for my age.)
In the 80s and 90s when I was dreaming Garfield dreams, syndicated newspaper strips were already dying. They’d been jam packed so tightly into rectangles in the comics section that no room for great cartooning remained. The schedules were brutal, the audience was broad and apt to complain, and the aging comics legends were phoning in or delegating their work, so even the full-page Sunday strips were gridded and lifeless. Even fresh new artists (rare as they were) were hammered creatively into the shape of the paper. The death of most major newspapers from the late 00s onward spelled the end of Garfield Meredith's dream.
The thing is, Garfield Meredith would be very pleased with the present day. Comics are bountiful, they're free to read online, and they're all accessible from a single app. Even better, the creators interact with their audiences day and night. In comics we have safely returned to the late-stage newspaper syndication model, after a brief "art by any means" era, with 24/7 access to the creators as a bonus. It goes without saying that most of the money these comics generate goes to the platform. As more people discover online comics, the memory of any other model has faded. Comics is a pushover industry, easily steamrolled by detached parties with money.
So what do we do? I'm afraid that's not what this post is about. Mom's tired. My heads is not really in the comics game anymore, and big tech & our rotting internet is a problem everywhere. But I think discussions about our history as cartoonists and comics appreciators - and an acknowledgment of what is disappearing - is important. It's no surprise that Bill Watterson's stubborn refusal to license, adapt, or needlessly continue his creation past its prime shocked me and many others onto a different path. I think it is useful to be a high-functioning crank in your own age: to fully accept the now without forgetting past possibilities or drawing a border around the future.
And of course, we mustn't let current trends tame our wild imaginations or our command of the craft. We have been given the tools to create beauty and make sense of life, and these creations - not the platforms that indiscriminately corral them - are worth sharing.
Had a dream where mini golf was added to the Olympics. And one of the Olympic mini golf athletes lost the gold because she hit the windmill.
And she tweets with a picture of the windmill and the caption “bout to go through my Don Quixote phase” and honestly I think that’s the funniest thing my brain has ever come up with.
This is a great joke and I don't mean to detract from it, but I have to take every opportunity I can to inform people that mini golf was a televised sport in Quebec for many years!
