A look into DessAngel

There are many bits and pieces throughout the dark worlds that are distinctly Dess-related, or Dess herself.

In chapter 2, her name appears in the letters Noelle is walking over. Noelle says Cyber City is exactly the kind of place Dess promised to take her to one day. The moon is a baseball.

In chapter 3, 1225 motifs appear all over. It's also the code to a bizarre secret labyrinth with a gumball machine dispensing a dark, triangular object (possibly a guitar pick, as shadow crystals and the black shard are not 'lacquered'). It falls through Kris's hand and leaves them unable to see it. In the secret Mantle minigames, one of the enemy monsters overrides a black deer sprite. The entirety of Raise Up Your Bat.

In chapter 4, if you backtrack after defeating the titan you will be stopped by "another hand pushing against yours," along with a muted guitar sound (same sound effect used by the guitar in her room).

I think basically everyone agrees that Dess is the 'lost girl' and probably UNUSED (since they talk about stuff in hometown.) I think her being unused/muted/hidden content most of the time is diagetic. However, I don't think she's just gone. You can wave away the Ch2/3 stuff if you really want to, but the secret bit in Ch4 is almost certainly Dess herself acting in the present. Even if you believe DessKnight, the Knight had just created the Titan before this, so it can't be Dess as them (alongside being extremely out of character with how the knight acts when alone with Kris prior). As Dess still exists and even interacts with Kris, I believe that she has the ability (conscious or unconscious) to subtly influence the dark worlds around her, narrative-haunting style.

This is why I believe that Dess is the angel, rather than the Knight. Dess was a little edgy and rebellious, but she was also fiercely protective of Noelle. The lyrics of raise up your bat are very in line with this. ("When your hope is slowly dying" / "When the future's lost its rights" / "Raise up your bat and face the fright" / "Let's knock 'em dead into the night").

One of the very few things we know about Dess's personality is how she would protect Noelle from Kris's pranks, watch horror movies with her, and comforted her when she was afraid exploring the graveyard. The lyrics about raising a bat to forces of fright even when you are at your lowest is exactly what I would expect to hear about Dess. Similarly, angels are typically seen as guardians and protectors. The way that Dess's memory, or active presence, influences dark worlds reminds me a lot of how the angel overlooks the heroes of the prophecy, or how angels watch over others in general.

In ch2, the baseball moon (an astral body overlooking everything) is in the center of the scene when Noelle is all alone and wishing Dess were there. Raise up your bat's lyrics ("Come with me in the dark" / "With your heart as the ark" / "Which shall shine you the way" / "Because I'm with you in the dark" / "With your heart as my mark") also heavily imply that Dess is still there in the dark watching over everyone. While it's probably there for rhyming, the use of ark, a boat commonly tied to christianity, is notable. RUYB shares lyrics with Don't Forget, and that song has practically the same 'I'm still here in the dark! Don't forget about me!' message. The suspicious 'perfectly out of frame' hand in Ch4 is Dess is pushing against Kris, but not in aggressive way. It reads as more reassuring to me, more of the still there + watching over deal.

wouldn’t it be cool if the character singing Don’t Forget, which we’ve heard since chapter 1, turned out to be a force in the darkness guiding and watching over us the entire time?

Some much looser stuff:

-Both Dess and Noelle built the light world angel statues together. -The angel prophecy panel being perfectly obscured by darkness matches how “perfectly out of frame” she is in chapter four. Interesting!

-The fact that she's trapped and has a presence in the dark worlds / depths in general and that dark fountain music is labelled as THE HOLY is A Connection. Is it a good one? Not really.

-Susie would not recognize Dess, so her reaction to the angel prophecy panel still makes sense. Additionally, she is something Kris would feel strange about looking at.

-Pure headcanon, but the little angels that show up everywhere Holiday-related being a stand-in for her continued influence on their lives even after her disappearance would be cool as fuck.

-I believe the physical location of Dess is beneath the sea, with her being the source of the song that onion guy hears. Music is a key part of her identity as a character, and RUYB literally says "which shall guide you the way, through the waves." This is also my fallback if she isn't the angel specifically, because I believe everything else about her influence over the dark worlds and presence within it independent of the knight.

-More absolute headcanon, but I think to 'banishing the angel's heaven' refers to everyone impacted finding closure and the ability to move on from her loss, as I doubt Dess is going to be recoverable. The people who want everything to go back to how it was are destroying the lives and relationships they have now, tenfold with whatever endgame roaring shit they're working towards (the 'angel's heaven' in this scenario). Of course Dess would in some capacity want this, but perhaps she knows that it can't happen. I think accounting for this line is the weakest part of my theory because it can mean literally anything, but playerangel accounts for it better imo. It's pure headcanon in any theory so it's really just up to personal opinion atp.

i wonder if Cartman saw chef as a father figure

it’s just interesting to me that he’s the one who suggests chef may still, impossibly, be alive (whilst standing over the multiple pieces of his corpse) and he’s the one who lingers behind when the boys decide to leave. Chef was the closest thing to a support system that Cartman has ever had in his life so it would make sense if that scene was meant to communicate cartman being more attached to him than the other boys.
