My library hold came in
just before I left for a long weekend at the cottage my grandfather has on the swampy end of a quite small lake. And despite having a migraine for half the trip and having dog health related trauma for the other half, I did manage to finish the second book in the Clocktaur War series.
The Wonder Engine, T. Kingfisher.
It had a broad shape I expected after the first one, I was delighted when more characters I recognized from the Paladin books showed up, and there were enough surprises that it wasn't just a delightful yet predictable escapade.
I can tell that the pieces of this series are going to be slotting into my memories of the Paladin plots for a little while. I'd been tempted to re-read those, and it's even more tempting now with this all fresh in my head. I've been really needing to get myself out of my own brain lately, and the World of the White Rat is a comfortable and interesting place to put it. I gotta get around to actually buying these books, so I don't have to wait on library holds every time.
Another book
Clockwork Boys, T Kingfisher.
I don't know the publishing order for these vs the Paladin series - I think these come first? But I am not the least bit sad I'm reading these after those, cuz things are just landing...so so good. The internal scream I scrumpt when the reveal hit in the first couple chapters for who Slate was picking? Oh ho hoooooo it was very good. Having heard so much about this guy's legacy, his infamy, and now getting to know him as a person? Delicious. Delightful. I love it.
This book was, however, too short. Ends on a cliffhanger (a sin I usually do not forgive), and so help me if the library has a wait for the next one I am not responsible for my actions. I am depressed and overwhelmed and PMS-ing so hard I want to die, and if I have to wait weeks for the next one I will do crimes.
(Even out of the context of the other Paladin series this is a very good story, good world stakes, protag who is interesting and flawed and relatable, Brenner reminds me too much of an archetype of guy I've met at faire (derogatory) but isn't so bad as to be loathed yet. I also love that, in the acknowledgements, the author says this story came about because she was mad about how paladins are always portrayed in the media, and as someone who also started writing a story out of spite borne largely from the dragon age games and their portrayal of knights, I feel a warm fuzzy sense of kinship.)
Another book
Paladin's Faith, by T. Kingfisher
I normally would have put off reading this one. There aren't enough of these books, and I love them so much, I like to spread them out. But the way the last one ended made me *need to read this one* and then this one barely touched on the plot thread that was the epilogue cliffhanger, and now this one also has one of those, and-! Ugh.
Very good book though. The author is one I trust to not fuck up the promise of a romance novel, ie that it will end well for the protagonists, and it was definitely needed in this one. But it's another one where the characters feel real and have depth and are relatable and Shane is so deeply, fundamentally broken by what he went through before that even a god confirms it but he's okay in the end and that alone was worth it. I worry for Judith. I want Wren to be able to go to that world's equivalent of an all inclusive island getaway without any other Saint of Steel paladins (maybe one of the Dreaming God's boys can go with her, if she needs paladin company) where she can have a good time and relax and flirt without her burly brothers ruining things.
I wanna know what the *fuck* Piper and Galen are doing!
Anyway, very good book, excellent read in a heatwave without central air when having the TV or a computer on would make it too hot in here.
I forgot that I should probably document the previous book
Book of a Thousand Days, by Shannon Hale. It was....fine? Compelling enough for me to read in one sitting - although that might just be because there aren't chapters, exactly, so there was no good place to stop - but I do not think it was worth the migraine I got. Which is my own fault of course, but still.
It is also not to say that it's not a good book. The story is interesting, and while I had a hard time connecting to some of the main characters that's almost entirely because the two girls you spend most of the book with are, like, fifteen years old. The setting was also interesting, the story taking place within a fantasy mongolia/eastern steppes kind of place/culture.
I did find the...secondary main character, I guess you'd call her? almost entirely insufferable. Has she endured horrors? Absolutely. Is she the reason the protag suffers basically every single abuse, injury, and hardship? Also yes. Like you don't want to be cruel to an obviously traumatized child, but at the same time you don't get to command someone whose firmly held faith does not allow them the ability to deny you without sacrificing the ability to go to the same afterlife as her beloved mother to throw their life away because you refuse to talk to a man. You just don't! And you don't get to do it AGAIN after that same person debased herself to save every single person in the whole fucking country while saying they're you (a mortal sin), so you get the credit! And then you still don't help, don't do fucking shit, when that same person gets in trouble for pretending to be you - a command you gave her, which she carried out because denying you was a worse sin than pretending to be you and all she wanted was to see her mom again when she died!!!! - and is gonna get dishonorably executed for it! Fuck that girl, is what I'm sayin, I can understand why she does the bad shit and still hold the bad shit against her.
Anyway interesting plot, not sad I read it, but v sad I was not unhurried about it.
Another book, this time by a favorite
Paladin's Hope, by T. Kingfisher. She's...okay it would be dishonest to say she's a "I will read anything she writes on sight" because if I read any of her horror, especially the one about screw worms, I would have a very bad time. But her world of the white rat is perhaps as beloved to me as Discworld, and that's kind of saying something. Her writing style sits so well in my brain, I love her characters, I love the complexity of her stories.
I had kind of been saving this one for when I needed to read something I knew would be good. I also told myself I wasn't going to read this in one sitting, since the last time I did that I got a migraine that lasted for a couple days and the book hadn't even been superlative enough to warrant that. But the brain soup was bad today and so I risked the migraine and might even have gotten away with it, and it was a very good story, and the epilogue means I need the next book, like, now. Ten out of ten, five stars, will read again.
Attempted another book, results poor
There's a cozy fantasy content creator I follow on instagram and she gives book recs all the time. I've had okay luck following her recs so far but this time...no. Just....no.
This was The Impossible Garden of Clara Thorne, by Summer N England. That is apparently the author's real name.
First red flag was when she cited When Harry Met Sally in her author intro, saying she'll watch it six times in a day. I absolutely cannot stand that movie, the relationship dynamic is not only unappealing to me but it makes me feel actively gross.
Second complaint came when I realized it was in first person. Not a dealbreaker for me usually, but also not my favorite.
The protag felt, and I mean this unkindly, like the OC of a deeply dramatic 15 year old tumblrina circa ~2003. She's clumsy, she thinks she's plain, she lives in modest means. She was abandoned by her parents, who also abused her, was on the run for her whole childhood, didn't believe in magic (magic is a main mechanic in this universe/story). She is unkind to literally every single person she interacts with while also believing herself in her inner monologue to be superior to them while also believing that she herself is awful and stupid and has no magic despite evidence to the contrary and everyone who believes what they've seen is stupid. And yet everyone loves her, they're very fond of her, praise her talent and achievements, celebrate her even as she mocks them - out loud! - for it.
Maybe the book gets better. But every indication was that the protag and the insanely hot muscular mysterious kind and gentle love interest would have to go on some long adventure. She would, of course, be what the author probably wanted to come off as "prickly and complicated" but actually works out to be a mean, obstinate, uncompromising "loner" who the man has to save multiple times despite being met with hostility every single time and who he also has to gentle parent (or possibly fuck senseless) until she gains the self awareness and acceptance to save the day/world/whatever, then they live happily ever after the end.
Add to the list of complaints that the author seems to have used those "lists of words to use instead of ____" posts too heavily. A kind character (she's literally honey themed, a healer, sweet and older and nurturing) was described as "screaming" when trying to get the protag (who had just suffered a twisted ankle, running over glass with bare feet, an enormous head injury, and had passed out) to stop panicking and flailing and freaking out because another person (dark and mysterious hotboi love interest) was in the room and she hadn't noticed. She keeps making word choices that break the flow of the narrative because they have slightly different accepted contexts than what feels appropriate, like she's getting points for using SAT vocabulary.
I'm sure this story is lovely. There are plenty of people for whom that type of protagonist is perfect and just what they want. I love that for them. It is not for me. I didn't even get five chapters in before the book went back to the library. May it be better received by the next person in the hold list.
Pro tip: if you cook/bake, get loved ones to write your recipe cards for you. Every time I bake my favorite chocolate chip cookies I think of my sister cuz she wrote the recipe out for me, and it's just really nice and cool. A good way to keep people you don't see every day present in your life.
Tagging just for my own records, plz disregard
Finished The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett. It's been something like a decade since I went through these books the first time, and I'm kind of curious how they'll hit this time around. I forgot this one ended like it did, and while I agree that it might be a less than ideal start for someone new to the series/author, I liked it more than I thought I would on memory alone.

What's a side quest that was better than the main story?
Feed your dashboard by answering my question, blogger.
Pretty much all of Skyrim, depending on what you consider the "main story". Is it the war? Storyline sucks, lemme go wander around the forests. Is it the dragon stuff? Don't wanna kill Parthunaax, don't wanna be made to feel bad for not killing Parthunaax, gonna go wander around the forests.

Hey can you guys reblog Cheeseburger so he can take a sunbeam nap on lots of blogs. No other reason I just want you guys to see him.
So my sister rescued this Singer from the garbage at the place she volunteers, and I don't have a machine that'll sew happily through thick material like this is known to be able to do, so I've made a project of getting it clean and going. It does have a motor but that needed new wires (which I have coming, along with a new belt), but I got the internals oiled today and it runs so smooth I could just cryyyyyy
Why yes, I did in fact come home from my parents house on Christmas and immediately that night succumb to a head cold - migraine feedback loop that has had me stuck in bed miserable and wishing for death ever since, why do you ask?
✨ The collection of my Mari Lwyd art through the years ✨ — First art is called: “Dude… give me the bottle” (or when you lost a rhyming contest against the supernatural skeletal horse) Second art is a meme reference x) Third art is featuring Mari on her day off (hence no rhyming, but she wouldn’t say no to a treat) Plus other stuff, silly sketches and artworks, like Mari Lwyd in modern times being disappointed that nobody wants to rhyme with her anymore, so she has to buy everything herself (featuring a distant relative of the guy from the first piece, plus a Waterboy mashup). —
P.S. - don’t forget about the frogs in some of the arts
I have to brain dump about a bad pet health situation so it's going behind a cut cuz nobody needs to see that shit.
So my dog is dying. Or rather, my dog has a tumor (probably cancer but we didn't get a biopsy so can't say for 100% sure but it does not actually matter) that is growing and will become incompatible with life. It's gonna make it so he can't poop, basically, and obviously that's not a tenable situation.
This oddly isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened with a family dog? My partner had a jack russell that had to get abruptly put down because he couldn't pee, and it turned out that a tumor had cut off his urethra somewhere in his body and nobody knew until it was a Problem. He was happy and playing and then dead, all in the same day. I really struggled with it.
But this is somehow worse? I say somehow like it's weird, but it isn't really, since this is our first dog, we've had him for ten years, I love him so much and he brings me so much joy every day. And now I start crying when he's really happy and playing because I know he won't be soon, and I start crying when he's sleepy and his head is in my lap and I'm petting it because I know I'll be doing that pretty soon while he goes to sleep for the last time in a vet's office.
And I know I should be grateful, and I am, that he's not suffering. He doesn't know he's nearing his end, he just knows it's harder to poop and he's gotta do it more often. He'll be vital and happy and active until his end, and that's good for him, I think, but so so hard. I know it's what he needs, I know it's a mercy to him, I know it's saving him from a terrible death, but it still feels like murder. There's no, like, progression into the slowness of old age. And he is old, ten is a pretty good age for a mid-size dog, but I know in my bones that without this new kind of tumor (he's got a bunch of fatty ones that we *thought* would be what got him eventually) he'd have a few years more. And it's not fair at all that he doesn't, because he's got so much life left. He was supposed to go back to the lake and have a nice time, since we learned last time in a very stressful way that he can't go swimming as much as he could when he was young. He should be going camping again. He has so many favorite toys to wear through still.
And what hurts so much is knowing it's coming and not knowing when. We'd just bought him an Advent calendar and now I don't know if he'll even get to use it, much less see the end of it. I know for sure that for the first time in...well, at least a decade, that I won't have a dog on my birthday. And I'm looking at my life and just seeing holes, and hardships. I can't help but preemptively live through the reality of having to take the dog sling out of the back seat. Of having to pack up all the dog stuff, his beds, his toys, his food bowls. Of having to give away the food and treats he's not gonna get through. I think of how many times I talk to him during the day, the stupid songs I made up for his mealtimes, the rituals of when he gets his meals and his meds and letting him out in the morning before I take my allergy stuff. I think of the ramble I always take him on at my inlaws house, so he can wander around and probably poop somewhere and I can escape the house for a bit and make sure there's nothing that needs attention outside where nobody else really goes.
I know this is all part of what you sign up for when you have a pet. I know it's never gonna really feel fair.
I'm trying to keep things as normal as possible for him, aside from all the crying I'm doing. He's getting spoiled more, of course - gotta work through this backlog of treats, after all - and in the background my brain is planning for the After. I know we're gonna get a dog again eventually, so we can save a lot of his stuff. He doesn't really tear up his toys, he's got two good beds we can save to use again, he's got his bowls and suchlike. I know my future is sobbing while I clean those things and put them away. And I'm trying to save myself some of that by doing bits of it now. I washed his nose prints off the upstairs window now, so I won't be erasing him after he's gone, I'm just cleaning the window. I'm washing his blankets more than I usually would, and trying to consolidate his toys in one spot so I have to search less later.
I don't know. This sucks, and I'm struggling so much with it, and at the same time I know this terrible limbo only breaks when he's gone, so I don't want that either. And it feels like an elephant in every room, and I'm trying to not talk about it both so I don't depress people since everyone else in my life is also fucking struggling and also so I don't cry at everyone, but then it's just me, in this house that's soon going to be haunted, choosing what I do with my day so that I'm with him as much as I can be and just being consistently crushed with the terrible knowledge that we're going to have to take him to a place he does not like and they're going to mercifully kill him and then we're going to have to leave him there, but unlike the other times we've had to leave him at a vet (for various surgeries, when we cried for the whole time he was gone, essentially), we don't get to go back in a day or two and have him there, overjoyed to see us. We'll get him back as dust. In a bag. Merry Christmas.
