HIMAG prototype, trialed together with the HSTVL as different solutions to the same problem, namely survivability.

HSTVL tested whether reducing the crew and completely overhauling the interior layout would work, to provide a well-protected vehicle at low weight. HIMAG was in the MBT weight class, albeit on the lower end, and was used as a test vehicle to trial if high power to weight ratio and thus high speeds would improve battlefield survivability, and incidentally to test fire control systems at those speeds. It also was made to be rather modular to test different combinations of different weights of systems; HSTVL remained at 19t but HIMAG varied from 32 to 45t.

Both systems were used to find out if certain theoretical predictions were true, and to test the impact and effectiveness of all the variations on the crew.

Both were testbeds meant to further the wider study, the ACVT program, which included service vehicles like the M60A1 and the M113 but also the XM-1 to gather solid data to compare active systems and how crews operated them with all the variations that could come in the future.
