Synopsis
Three centuries ago The Fairy King won The Monarch War and murdered his queen, sealing the Veilgate between the otherworld and mortal realm. The fairies left behind in the mortal realm were exterminated by humans loyal to The King's philosophy, their souls unable to return home. Wistguard, the capital city of magic, industrialized and a majority of the public accepted the loss of magic.
Except, in the dead of night, amateur wizard Ben Sutton manages to resurrect a fairy, bringing back The Queen's General, Lark Elmrose. The two now must forge an uneasy alliance to open up the Veilgate and bring back the fairies in order to restore what once was.

If you still have questions Mad Magic feel free to ponder the orb on my page and send me an ask!
I LOVE writing, not just storytelling but the act of writing itself. I like putting my thoughts down into words I can read. So much so I've never hated writing an essay for a class, but I've been tested by the powers that be lately. For some god awful reason the professor of this college class I'm taking wants to insert AI into EVERYTHING. Especially essays. He makes us peer review with AI instead of talking with our flesh and blood peers, he grades all our work with AI and gives the most vague bullshit feedback to our writings with AI and I'm so sick of it!
For weeks I've been struggling to cater to this professor's whims when it comes to my writing (Guy is a full on right-wing conspiracy theorist btw) and the only thing keeping me going is writing new chapters of Mad Magic as a treat whenever I finish a part on an essay.
All that to say, there will be new chapters coming soon within the first two weeks of August and FUCK AI!!!

So the next update for Mad Magic will include not only two new chapters (Possibly more but not making any promises) but a new addition to the impossibly small au story! I'll have this all ready sometime next week.
I'm also working on making a uniform breakdown for the military/police of Mad Magic's world. No guarantee on when that will come out cause making all the art for it has been very time consuming.
As always send in asks by pondering the orb on my page!
This will be the start of a mini series of accounts written by humans who encountered Lark Elmrose and The First Division during the Monarch War that will eventually get posted to Ao3 in chronological order.
Enjoy excerpt one below the cut.
Personal journal entries written by councilman Dubrook throughout the December of 1544
For the past two weeks I have not rested well. Our fair city has been thrown into chaos by this sudden faerie civil war and it is only a matter of time until blood is spilled in our realm.
My fretting has driven me to small madness as I hear movement in the walls now. At first I thought it was rodents but in the extremely still moments I swear I can hear the clanking and scraping of metal.

One of my servants has told me the food stores have been disappearing in small portions. Cuts in the cheese and cured meats where there were none before. Upon inspecting the food myself there is no denying a very small knife had done the work.
During the examination the servant mentioned overhearing quiet chatter near the kegs a few days ago. Out of suspicion I checked their condition and on the back of one I found a hole the size of my pinky nail patched with some sort of semi-solid sap.
The evidence points to the work of some sort of smaller fae.

It has been days and I have not found the culprit, I am beginning to assume there is more than one though. Worse yet, the tensions have come to a head. Veiland’s military has been deployed in the city in fear of whatever retaliation The King sends to his queen who has sought refuge here.

I saw one of them. A sylph I believe. The candlelight did little service to my vision but I saw it in the brief moment before it went invisible. I was restless, the decision to bring about necromancy war law weighing heavy on my mind. I had gotten up to retrieve a favorite book of mine from the shelf next to my desk, and that’s where it was.
A tiny androgynous figure with pale blue skin and wispy fog-like wings. It was dressed in what I assume to be a black variation of the realm protector uniform, the glint of the pins being the only indication of such.
After it disappeared I called out for it. I expressed wanting to help during these troublesome times but got no response.

They’ve left. I heard a raucous moving through the walls late last night. I rushed to meet whatever or whoever was doing so but a surprisingly loud voice from the rafters stopped me.
“We thank you for your hospitality but you have compromised us.” His tone was calculatingly cordial like a diplomat's, “We are leaving, if you dare try to follow you will be met with force.”
I looked up to see a leather armor clad sprite, with a light crossbow pointed at me. I could barely spy his pins behind the collar of his breastplate. It was clear the high general wanted me to hear the moving of his forces, he wanted my attention. “We do not want to fight this war on two fronts, but we cannot trust your country until you stand with us. The Queen cares for this land as much as you do. The King does not, make the right decision.”
Much to my hesitation I backed away, words evading me as he slipped away.
Cute Lark and Gareth drawing to make up for the angsty stuff I've been putting out.
I've been having fun writing their dynamic for future scenes and I can't wait to release those chapters. However it's gonna take a while before those moments happen.
While planning out a combat scene for way later on in the story I was listening to a shuffle playlist of metal/rock and imaging Lark being badass, proving he's a capable force and all that and then just pausing and remembering...
This dude is six inches tall.
To an outsider's perspective (his opponent) he's more like an overly aggressive rodent. Sure he can hurt you and screw you up but it's gonna take a LOT of effort on his end, to the point it's almost futile.
For Lark this is a fight for his very right to exist, this man is done playing nice and is certainly considering murder.
Meanwhile the guy he's fighting is just annoyed that he has to go out of his way to deal with this sprite and thinks this situation is just a simple, silly farce.
Most of the humans in Mad Magic are not gonna take Lark seriously in a fight. (Even though they SHOULD.)

Alrighty, I just wanted to get that train of thought out there so I could focus on the more import parts of the story that are upcoming at the end of this month. (Goofy magical hijinks will ensue.)
To prove Lark is fully capable of fuckin' shit up I made a few messy sketches of him fighting humans during the Monarch War. I didn't ink them because this was something I banged out in my spare time.
To preface Lark has never deliberately killed anyone, (Obviously, since he's a general his hands aren't exactly clean) but he has seriously injured people.
(CW for below the cut: Unrealistic artistic depictions of violence and gore.)
Tinies violently fighting giants is something that scratches my brain because it ties action, horror, and strategy together in a way that is unique to the g/t trope. Pair that with giants who are symbols/metaphors/allegories for forms of oppression and *mwah* the fight becomes the most visceral display of autonomy.
I totally understand those who are not into that kind of conflict in their g/t stories (I've been tryin to use it sparingly in mine) but dang do I find it fascinating.
Also the next art post will be very wholesome as a way to make up for this.

STEP RIGHT UP FOR SOME ANGST!
I know I promised three chapters this update but I wasn't satisfied with the writing of chapter 23 so it'll be postponed a few days so I can edit.
However on the upside I have a new upcoming addition to Mad Magic...
Every once in a while between updates I will release "excerpts". These will be short prequel stories that take place mostly during the Monarch War. These stories will come in the form of letters and journal entries written by various humans who had run in's with The Queen's First Division. A.K.A The Otherworld's Tiniest Battalion.
(These stories will be posted to both tumblr and ao3.)
I will release the first excerpt alongside chapter 23.
