this is such a great question! I hope you dont mind if I put my two cents in, unsolicited lmao

so of course this varies from person to person since we know so little about them. I have read fics where they're very dysfunctional and toxic (realistic given their characters), and a fic where they physically fought over who got to kill katniss and the only thing stopping it was the rule change

as both a shipper and as just a They Had Some Level Of Soulmate Connection Whether It Was Romantic Or Not truther, I think that they did have their squabbles and spats. they are both very imperfect characters who are also canonically violent, it makes sense for them to snap at each other, and with the stressful and emotionally/physically taxing environment of the arena, were probably snippy with each other and perhaps threatening to pull out their weapons and injure one another. still, i also believe that they worked well together as a team and had affection for each other. with what we know about d2 as well as what is implied about career culture, they value honor and glory, which is why they would have respect and a strong partnership as part of presenting an honorable representation of their district and what d2 stands for.

the concept of them arguing is so fascinating to me. an important part of how I think of their relationship is how they are each other's equal, they hold the other in esteem - especially compared to the other careers - because they're from the same place with similar values, and their arguments could show that they're very compatible because they are both passionate and feel free to share their thoughts and frustrations. it's clear from the fact that cato "let" clove have katniss after clove "promised" to make a show of it that they are willing to compromise and back each other up. with such strong (and violent!) personalities as theirs, they definitely had their share of spats but also this underlying respect and friendship and, as my friend Jordan writes clove describing it, "comradery," that always brought them to some sort of agreement at the end.

for some shameless self promotion, here are a couple of fics i've written that show them arguing in the arena. this one is a theory of how they would respond in katniss and peeta's place at the end, and this one is a fic where cato got to her in time.
