Photographer Jacob F. Lucas's new book Commute Culture explores modern-day commuters’ attachment to their mobile phones, highlighting a mashup of digital and “real” worlds in beautiful photos. His observations probably won’t surprise you — today we spend most of our time in transit engrossed with our screens rather than interacting with people around us. Lucas is concerned about the effect this trend will have on our ability for true human interaction:

What do we sacrifice for the price of convenience? We miss out on the little things like serendipitously bumping into a friend at the supermarket. We miss out on writing actual letters to friends. We miss out on real, physical connection with other people. These little things have all but vanished from modern society, and have left a very large void.
