How to replace the Keyboard for HP Pavilion DV6
This document applies to HP Pavilion dv6-7x00 series and HP ENVY dv6-7x00 series notebook computers.
Before you begin
You need a Phillips head screwdriver.
Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
It's strongly recommended the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
1. Replacing the keyboard
WARNING:Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Follow the steps in this section to remove the keyboard.
Step 1 Remove the battery.
Step 2 Remove the service door.
Step 3 Remove the CD/DVD drive.
Step 4 Remove the two Phillips head screws (identified with a keyboard icon) that secure the keyboard to the computer.
Step 5 Open the display panel and position the computer for easy access to the CD/DVD drive.
Step 6 Gently poke through the hole with your finger to release the keyboard.
Step 7 Turn the notebook right side up and open all the way.
Step 8 Lift the rear edge of the keyboard and rotate it to the front until you have access to the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector.
NOTE:Do not lift the keyboard further away from the notebook than necessary to access the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector
Step 9 Gently lift the locking bar on the keyboard ZIF connector and remove the keyboard ribbon cable.
CAUTION:Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
Step 10 Remove the ribbon cable.
NOTE:If the keyboard is backlit, disconnect the additional connector from the keyboard and system board.
Step 11 Remove the keyboard.
2. Replacing the keyboard
Use the steps in this section to replace the keyboard.
Step 1 Position the keyboard upside down so you have access to the ribbon cable and the connector.
Step 2 Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
CAUTION:Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
Step 3 Push the locking bar down to secure the ribbon cable in the connector.
NOTE:If the keyboard is backlit, connect the additional connector from the keyboard to the system board.
Step 4 Turn the keyboard over and place the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover
Step 5 Press the keyboard down and press along the edges of the keyboard to secure it to the notebook.
Step 6 Close the display panel, turn the notebook upside down, and replace the two screws that secure the keyboard to the base.
Step 7 Replace the CD/DVD drive. For more information about replacing the CD/DVD drive, refer to the HP support document Adding or Replacing a CD or DVD Drive .
Step 8 Replace the service door. For more information about replacing the service door, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Service Door .
Step 9 Replace the battery.
