"Holmes, this will be fun," John looks over at his friend who sits rigidly in the driverâs seat.
"Roadtripping? Rednecks?" He spits the words out as if they taste foul in his mouth.Â
"Just because theyâre Americans does not mean that they are rednecks or any other insult you could think to apply to them for that matter."Â
"I cannot believe that I trusted you when you said you had a pleasant time planned. You said it would be constructive."
"This is constructive. I need a break from dead people and body parts in the fridge."
"That was a crucial experiment and I was just on the verge of a breakthrough." John can hear the moping in his voice.Â
"Look at this lovely place." They had just entered what was apparently the maine street of a little town. "Maybe we can stop somewhere and get a nice cuppa. Did you happen to catch the name?"
Holmes looks at him incredulously. âJohn, is it not obvious? Look around you and observe the signs on the shops. Hays coffeehouse, Hays public library, Hays police department need I really say more?â
John ignores his deprecatory tone. âLetâs stop there. At the coffeehouse. Theyâll certainly have tea there.â
"Iâm going to go talk to the Police Chief."
"What for, Sherlock? You arenât going to get involved. Theyâe rednecks, remember?"
"Nonsense, John. I may as well be of some use. Heâs clearly in way over his head."
John gives in, and heads toward the coffeehouse. Once inside the cozy little shop he orders what Americans apparently thought passed for tea and sits down. He purchases one of the cheesy novels that overflow the shelves toward the back and begins to read. It ends with the guy getting the girl and the dog dead. He lays it aside and looks out the window. Holmes still hasnât shown.Â
"SirâŚSir?"
He looks up to see a somewhat willowy teenager with mouse brown hair and big brown eyes looking down at him. In one hand she holds an almost empty coffee pot and the other one is tucked into the pocket of her apron.Â
"Yes?"
"You came with a tall, slightly sallow man with dark, curly hair?"
"Yes."
âWell, I thought I should tell you that heâs gone over to Ashley. He left about half an hour ago.â
"Thank you, Miss." For a moment he canât believe that Holmes would leave without telling him, but then he remembers just who it is. Sherlock probably found some case or other. With a sigh he gets up. "Which way to Ashley?"
"Oh, itâs straight up the road there. You canât miss it."
He signs the check, pays for his âteaâ, and leaves.Â
Heâll have to catch a ride. Maybe he should just stay here overnight and meet up with Sherlock tomorrow? No, heâs going to Ashley tonight; looking at the map it isnât all that far. Maybe fifteen minutes. They can get a hotel room, and then leave in the morning if Sherlock has already solved the case. If he hasnâtâŚwell, heâll just hope that Sherlock has.Â
He gets a ride over to Ashley from an older man whoâs headed that way. The man says he lives in Ashley and only came over for a birthday party. His granddaughterâs. Â Itâs nice to talk to someone who isnât a âhigh-functioning sociopathâ. The roll into Ashley an the man drops John off in front of the hotel.Â
Once in his room, John sits on the bed and calls Holmes. He had tried in the car, but it had gone to voicemail. Even if he doesnât ever get the voicemail, Sherlockâs smart enough to figure out where John went. He doesnât have anything to change in to, all the luggage was in the rental, so he takes off his shoes and chooses a bed. He pulls a picture out of his pocket. The smiling faces of Molly, Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and himself look our at him. Sherlock and Mycroft are also present, though they arenât exactly smiling. He sets it on the bedside table and turns onto his side. After about half an hour he drifts off.
