“He only smashes guitars on stage when he’s getting off on it,” Damon replies. “When Graham’s not having a good time he just gets very very tightarsed about things and doesn’t smile at all and mopes about.” “Morose,” Graham volunteers morosely. “Very morose,” says Damon. “Very indulgent,” says Graham. “So I do little funny dances to try and cheer him up.” Does it work? “No, he gets more and more morose and I get more and more downhearted and then Alex starts to really annoy me and I start shouting at him and then he stops playing in the middle of songs which makes me want to punch him out but I never do ‘cause he’s the most passive man on the planet.””

Excerpt of an episode from Off The Menu podcast with Graham Coxon (starting at 8:35) Graham talking about him and Damon acting in plays together in school. He says him and Damon were in tons of school productions, such as “Guys and Dolls”, “Orpheus in the Underworld”, “The Bartered Bride”, “Oh what a lovely war”.
James (interviewer/host): Were you and Damon ever like a double act in those plays? Graham: Oh not at all. He was less shy, he was more extroverted. He was really into it. And I go into this in my book (his autobiography). The first time I saw him in school assembly, he was doing Officer Krupke. And I was like, “Oh my god, the gall of this bloke!” I mean, unbelievable. He was not very old and just doing this thing like a professional, especially compared to everybody else on stage in that school assembly who were sort of like, looking very awkward obviously. He was like, pizzazz. He would always get like proper parts, like he would be playing Zeus, or this or that. And I would have multiple parts or just a sort of like, lower individual to play - sort of like lower prestige.
James: Do you think you still, in making this new album, and like playing together now - is it still that thing where you can surprise each other like that? Or are you pretty much like, you know what each other’s gonna do now? Do you still have that thing where someone’s going ”Oh! They just pulled that out!” Graham: We don’t really know what the others are gonna do. We do get surprised but we don’t let it show. (Everybody laughs.) If we are surprised or impressed, we never let that show. Because, that would mean we’d sort of stopped trying. To do, To push. But we always know there’s going to be hilarity and a lot of darkness. But when it comes to the music side of it, we are pretty serious about doing that. You’ve got to have some stupid laughs. Otherwise it becomes too intense.

“[The lyrics in The Magic Whip] deal with our relationship and the way we perceive the contemporary world, this crazy planet we’re living on. When I recorded my vocals, I was feeling very nervous… It was the same kind of insecurity I had felt when recording Think Tank, on which I sing: ‘What am I to do/Someone here is really not happy.’”
