Ah, the usual question. “Simply roaming. I like getting lost at times as it helps me find events easier.” 

They seem to be the current one going on so it would seem.

“I suppose that is a trait we share then. It’s nice sometimes to get lost in this strange little world, don’t you think? I’d rather be here in this crazy place than back home.” 

Though maybe that needed the context of where his home was to really show what he meant. Gehenna, or hell as most humans called it now, was far less pleasant than this.

I just didn’t expect brotherly love to be almost killing one another that shit ain’t something I signed up for.   ❞ Not like he signed up for anything as he was forced into the exorcist world with the death of his father, by his actual father who was number 1 asshole in Rin’s list. ❝   I got another question y’all actually related to Satan or y’all just call him father cuz he’s the strongest? cuz none of y’all look alike.   ❞

“Honestly, the half human bit might be part of why they’re so aggressive. But it isn’t all of it. There’s the fact that none of us really know what you can do. We grew up together more or less. We’re well acquainted with each other’s powers. You’re a wild card, so of course the more competitive sides of our brothers would want to know how well you can hold your own. And they might push you a little harder because you are half human, whether out of prejudice or just to make sure you can keep up. There’s also probably an amount of jealousy. You were the only one to inherit Satan’s prized flames after all. And, as I said, there’s a cultural difference. The way demons interact with each other is very different from what you are probably expecting, being raised in such a human way.“

“Truth be told, that question is hard to answer. Time is hard for a lot of demons to conceptualize the way that humans do. Demons close to Samael, like myself and our brothers, especially so. It sort of loses it’s meaning when big brother is always twisting and turning it every which way. Though I can say for a fact it’s older than that. Amaimon’s vessel was acquired over a thousand years ago and I was at least toddling by the time he came to Assiah for his first visit.” 

The white haired demon shrugged slightly, retrieving a bag of candies from his pocket. He popped a handful into his mouth before wordlessly offering some to the other. 

“You’re in that exorcist school, right? Haven’t they taught you anything actually about demons instead of just how to get rid of them? Well, I suppose it would be far fetched to think many humans would take the time to learn anything about our culture but I would think that at least our physiology. Especially with Samael having a hand in it. Though I suppose he doesn’t really teach, does he?”

He shook his head, apparently realizing he had gone off tract from the boy’s questions. 

“That question also is a complicated one. What do you mean by related? Because that means a much different thing to demons than it does to humans. And why we look different is a whole different question in and of itself. 

If you are asking if we're all born to him, the way you and your brother were, I can say that I was. Satan is my father biologically, and my mother is one of his concubines. If the others were born that way then I’d suspect that we were all born from different concubines and that is one explanation of why we might all look different. Though honestly, it might not be that either because demons don’t have DNA the way humans do, so the passing down of traits is a bit less straightforward. 

Though not all demons are born in that sense. In fact quite a lot aren’t. It is possible to create a demon from almost anything with the right conditions. It’s been speculated, behind closed doors and all, that Lucifer was created solely from Satan. Pure light energy shaped and given form to the demon we know today.  I’ve also heard that some of our brothers were snatched up as babes because of their latent powers and groomed by our father. Though, who’s to say what is true, and what is just maids’ gossip? 

What I will say though, in terms of our being “related” to Satan, is that we all share some modicum of his power. As a demon I feel that is a more intimate type of relation than the idea of being born from someone is. It manifests differently in each of us, but we all have some tiny piece of his power. Like I said before, your blue flames are your piece. That’s why you’ll meet those who will count you as Satan’s son but deny your brother even though you are twins. They don’t care for the circumstances of your birth. Only that you inherited from him, and Yukio did not. 

In the end, it’s rare to find a demon “family” and much rarer to find one all by the same progeny. We just don't have the same bonding patterns that humans do, and most of our “families” are ones we choose ourselves. 

As to why we all look different, there’s the theory with the different mothers to start. And if one of our brothers was simply created his features would likely take on characteristics of whatever type of demon he is. Remember that each of Satan’s sons is a fundamentally different type of demon. I am pale and lithe, that reflects the fact I am a spirit demon. On the other hand Lucifer has much more bright and vibrant colors, shining gold hair and emerald green eyes. Exactly what you’d expect from the shimmering kingdom of Light. 

And to top it off, well, you do recall that demons need to take a vessel of some kind in this world, don’t you? That certainly affects how we all look when were here. There has to be a certain... we’ll say resemblance for lack of a better word in order to make a meaningful bond and stay for long periods in a vessel, but in a pinch you can kind of shove your way into anything. You just run the risk of it rejecting you and being destroyed. And I haven’t even gotten into what we look like in a more true form rather than shifted to appear more like humans, but well, I don’t wanna chatter your ear off.”

   “Always a good idea to have that in mind in this place.” Alex was hardly offended at the words, just giving a bigger grin and finishing off his drink. “People always lookin’ to pull a fast one on you.”

   He leaned in close then, eyes alight. “Lucky for you, not much I’m lookin’ to get out of people these days. How about I do a favour for you, show of faith and good will and all that shit? I’m feelin’ rather charitable, and you’re pretty damn cute.”

“Such is the nature of all that draws breath, right? Always looking out for themselves first. Even when someone dies, the mourning others feel is for what they lost in losing them. Not for the dead themselves.” 

He should probably amend that because, well, he doesn’t really need to draw breath at all does he? And neither do the rest of his subjects. But he felt the point got across regardless. 

The demon’s expression shifted to something more playful at Alex’s next words, and he let out a soft laugh. His interest was certainly piqued. 

“Hm, well, y’know flattery will get you nowhere with me. Unfortunately I am well aware how cute I am. That said I do quite like to be reminded and you have caught my curiosity if nothing else.”

Do multiple worlds exist? However, that should explain his presence because it didn’t felt like of this world. So maybe he was telling the truth?

“Really? You didn’t scare me, I was just very cautious about you. How did you travel to my world? Why did you travel here?”

“Well, it’s easy for me to travel between worlds. My home is split into two worlds itself. There’s a physical world and, for lack of a better word, a spiritual world. As a spirit I can pass between the two. It really only took a little bit of effort to end up in a world not a part of our own system. It’s like, passing through a curtain almost. But the curtain is kind of stiff so you’ve gotta kinda push to get past.” 

The demon wasn’t quite sure how to explain it. Every world that he had been in so far was well aware that other worlds existed out there. Hell, Wonderland seemed to regularly procure “outsiders” for their little games and such. 

“As for why, well, a change of scenery is nice now and then. Don’t you think?”

Mokoro just. Stares blankly at the nearest wall. Why does he still question things…? “I’m getting some tea and maybe a few cookies.”

“Oh. I guess I forgot about laws, honestly. This place is so weird already I kind of assumed it was anything goes. What a lame thing to regulate. Clearly who ever decided that needs a few more sex toys themselves.” 

He shrugged slightly, mind already having moved on to the other potential product.

“I know in my world they sell bundles of cleansing herbs, a lot of crystals with mystical properties, talismans, candles with runes carved into them, you name it. Some of it is legit, and some of it is just pretty with fancy symbols. Even people with no magical ability at all jump on it as a market. Seems that humans believing it will work is enough to make them buy it and then claim it does.” 

The demon’s red eyed gaze shifted back to Mokoro, grinning like the devil he was. 

“Got anything chocolate around here? I’d kill for some.”

“Of course I can, but I don’t want you shitting yourself if I show you.” Nero snorts, he could show off his demon form right now if he wanted, he’s pretty sure this guy has figured out he’s not entirely human at this point.

“Oh yes. I’m sure that’s exactly how it would go down.”

Azazel can’t help but roll his eyes, laughing all the while. He wondered, briefly, what the other would say when he inevitably revealed his identity of a king among demons. But that would be for another visit.

“I gotta say if nothing else I do love the confidence.”

“H-hey now! L-l-let us not get carried away!”

Yunneth couldn’t handle such compliments. In her mind? She was hideous. If he saw the amount of scars she has on her body? He’d surely be revolted and take back what he said. Her? Cute? No way in hell… Though that blush can’t be hidden easily. Yunneth “I can’t take compliments but I secretly love them” Sinclair, everyone.

Once he reassured her that it wasn’t as gross as it seemed, she would take the bigger piece in hand. The thought of candied bacon was…something of an oddity to her. Okay…thinking about it, maybe she’s more of a food snob than she thought…because the thought of candied bacon sounded disgusting. Who thinks of such things? Oh well…

Taking a small bite into it, it didn’t take long for her to start scarfing it down like she hadn’t eaten in awhile. Okay, candied bacon tastes like this, then perhaps she’ll take back what she said.

“This is delicious!”

An actual smile. Her stoicism has broken. There was no sad or forlorn smiles. A genuine, bright smile was on her face. A rarity now adays.

“Carried away? Oh no. Not at all. ”

He echoed her words with the faintest of laughs, a hint of mischief in his eyes. If she thought that one passing compliment was getting carried away he would just have to show her what getting carried away was really like. There was a reason demons were said to have silver tongues, and out of all his siblings Azazel’s charm was second only to Samael. And even that was up for debate in his opinion. 

But that would be an endeavor for a different time. For now his goal was just making sure that his newest pet was back in good health as soon as possible. It seemed that every time the spirit king spent a bit too long lingering around mortals he found one that he’d grown attached to. It was hard not to. They had an air and feeling of liveliness that demons could never replicate. They were young and bright and bursting, and hardly ever lasted long enough to stop being those things. Perhaps that was the trade off for things of that nature.  

“See? I told you that you could trust me. Have I steered you wrong so far?”

   Ryou glanced over to the pair, but turned his eyes back to the shadows in the corner. It was easier to concentrate on reaching out to the spirit, that way.

“I’m not sure. My writing with this hand isn’t very consistent, anyway. But it seemed easier to reach out this way, rather than using one. Also less odd if I was caught.”

   “I’m going to try to focus on this. If you wanted to do some looking around, now is probably a good time.”

“Oh, I suppose you have a point there. Though if the spirit here is as well known as you said before I think it would be pretty obvious to anyone who would happen to wander down here what we’re doing anyway. You managed to call me out right away, didn’t you?”

He kicked off the wall he’d been leaning on, moving around the room a bit to see if he spotted anything. Spirits like this were usually the type that hid from him. They knew that they made trouble, and also knew they weren’t strong enough for a fight. But, maybe if the other caught it’s attention before it noticed Azazel it would be better than usual.

Even if escaping from this place wasn’t, in the strictest sense, possible, Avenger could still navigate it with relative ease. Still, the nightmare should have ended, so why did this place still exist? Avenger would need to search the prison thoroughly for any hope of finding an answer.

Of course, doing so proved bothersome with the various spirits that repeatedly crossed his path. Avenger was able to dispose of them with ease, though the more he fought, the longer it took… It occurred to him then that either his power was waning, or theirs was growing. Damn it… This could prove troublesome. The sounds of conflict echoed throughout the prison with every battle as Avenger attempted to make his way to the lower levels.

The sound of struggle and combat was easy enough to follow, and it wasn’t like there was much else in this damned place making noise. Azazel assumed that meant he’d find that grouchy stranger if he followed the sound. And if not, maybe it would be someone else who’d be a little more open about helping him out of this place.

But of course, no such luck. When he finally rounded the corner to find the source of the noise it was the same stranger, beating off the spirits lingering around him. Irritating, but Azazel would rather be here with someone than alone. After a moment he called out to the other. 

“Do you want my help? Or would you like to keep acting like a petulant child?”

His methods are gross…but it did save her from having to drink vampire blood. Doing such a thing would put her at risk of losing her human self…or at least make it more likely her blood will change. The last thing she wants to do is “Poke the bear” so to speak; especially since that bear can and will make it so she isn’t herself anymore. Really? Yunneth is grateful she ran into Azazel when she did. Things would have gone so much worse had they missed each other.

Though that sentiment would change a little when he would give her a Cockatrice heart. Yunneth doesn’t mind demon foods. She has eaten some herself and handles it well; better than most humans. But even she has her limits and this is coming from someone who isn’t a picky eater!

“……I’m starting to think you enjoy giving me odd and gross things to ingest.”

Yunneth would say with some disgust in her tone as she accused him of torturing her. Looking at it made her want to vomit. Her constitution is at a low right now. Not only that, she felt disoriented from the medicine she took prior to finding Azazel. It looked fleshy and probably has a chewy consistency. Not only that, there may still be blood inside, something she is already trying to avoid for the sake of her current self. She didn’t want to be rude but…

“Do I have to? I enjoy sweets but…that looks like something that should be cooked before consumption. Preferably fried, grilled, or baked.”

She’ll eat it if need be but she was starting to draw a line of what she’ll eat at this point.

“Uphir is a genius apothecary, that is for sure. But, I wouldn’t hold my breath for his brewing or cooking career anytime soon.”

He laughed faintly, gently petting her hair again. It was good to see her starting to feel better. Seemed like it was a good call to treat her injuries the same as his back then. Azazel figured that he should probably still bring her to her friends, but at least now it didn’t feel like it was a life or death situation. He didn’t feel as much like he was on a time crunch now. 

It had been a long time since Azazel had allowed himself to get attached to a human. It was hard. They were fragile and short lived. It was a loss waiting to happen. But Azazel had come to like this one. He wanted to make sure that she got a fair shot at all of this. Even if helping her ended up with her throwing up all over him. 

 “I promise you, little one. This is not nearly as gross as it looks, and it will be a benefit to you. It’ll help bring some color back into that cute face of yours. Alright? And it isn’t at all what it looks. That’s the thing when it comes to demons. You never get what you see.” 

The demon took the heart in his hands and snapped a piece off, revealing that the soft and fleshy looking heart was actually more of a brittle hard candy consistency. Through the hole in the top, he showed her that the inside was empty save for the sugar crystals that had fallen off of the side. Finally, he popped the piece into his mouth with a smile.

“I promise I wouldn’t give you anything that I wouldn’t eat, and haven’t eat a million times before. My methods are tried and true, and tried on me. Don’t worry. Besides, the taste is basically just candied bacon.”

Did he just say he was a specter? Wait, no. He said specter was the closest. That meant he wasn’t really a specter, was he? Besides, he could feel that this person was not a specter at all. To him, ghosts and specters are completely different beings but he was neither of those to him. Not only that… in his world? What was he talking about?

“You…you are confusing me. I can sense that you are not a specter or a ghost either. I don’t understand your ramblings at all. And what do you mean in your world?”

The stranger was very calm and he almost seemed like he didn’t care about anything at the moment…

Ah, maybe this world wasn’t quite like the last few that he had visited. Most of the ones he’d be to recently were quite used to inter-world travel. And maybe things here worked a little different in other ways. Though Azazel supposed that he had already shown too much of his hand to lie now.

“Well, I mean just what I said. I came from a different world, and traveled here. Sorry. I’m not used to worlds where that isn’t common place. I didn’t mean to freak you out or anything. Maybe that is why I feel strange to you?”

   That… well. What an odd looking creature. It vaguely reminded Ryou of a duel spirit, and he had to reappraise the stranger.

Perhaps there was more to him than he initially thought.

   “I haven’t either.” Ryou confessed, grabbing a pencil to hold loosely in his right hand. “The principle seems easy enough, though, and seems like it would get any message through clearer than other means.”

He sat back then, taking a breath and closing his eyes. He cast out with his senses, hoping to create a sense of invitation as he let his hand just start moving.

 The demon focused on the other’s actions, wanting to see how this would work. As he did, Aurun sidled up next to his ear and began to whisper. He’d sense the spirit somewhere in the vicinity, but couldn’t pin point where. It seemed angry, but also not strong enough to be any real threat. 

At the end Aurun asked who the boy was, and Azazel cuffed him about the ears. 

“Yeah, it seems easy. Though I would have thought of a oujia board before this. Horrible hand writing. Though, would it be your hand writing or theirs?”

All he wanted was to be left alone but it seems his distant relatives didn’t want to accept his wishes. ❝   Youngest? Let me guess your still hella older than me aren’t ya’? Now I ain’t trying to be rude but like why the hell are ya’ here? I only ever see my other brothers when they want to mess with me.   ❞ Rin hasn’t met all his supposed brother but after Astatroth tried to drag him to hell, Mephisto wanting to use him as a tool and Amaimon trying to fight him Rin had assumed that if he met the rest it’ll only bring trouble. 

“I figured that would be obvious. Though, there’s a certain degree of equivalence. Were I human, I’d probably only be a few years older than you.”

Azazel laughed softly, unfazed by the other’s abrasiveness. It’s not like dealing with their older brothers was frequently warmer than what he was getting now. At least he could see that Rin would be able to fit in with this family. 

“I figured that would probably be the case. It’s why I decided to check in with you, honestly. They were always the same with me. Brotherly hazing taken to a demonic level. They’re not used to treating family by human standards. Not making excuses, just offering an explanation.”

   “Probably not. Can’t say I’ve ever had a wine I like the taste of.” Alex wondered if it really was sweet, or if nostalgia was painting his memory.

None of his business either way.

   “Well, if you like what you see round here, then you’ll be able to find some friends. Course, have to be careful of people who are just tryin’ to pull shit over on you, but you can find good friends if you know where to look.” Alex gave a vague pointing gesture with the glass when it was set down before taking a drink.

“You’re already takin’ the right step if I do say so myself.”

“You’ve never tasted this one. Trust me.” 

The demon grinned, running a hand through his hair. He’d be sure to bring Alex some, just to prove him wrong one day.

The implication’s in his companion’s final thought shifted his grin to something a little bit softer. It had been a long time since the last time he made a friend. Maybe he’d even stick around here around a little longer. 

“I think I know where to find some good friends. Though I’m no stranger to people trying to pull one over on me. Most of the ‘Friends’ I’ve had before weren’t really in it for me.”

This demon was idiot… This was not a physical place, and so one could not physically leave it. No matter. He would likely discover how futile such efforts were soon enough… For the time-being, though, Avenger needed to find the cause for their presence here.

Azazel sighed, leaning back heavily against the wall as he watched the other disappear. This was some kind of bullshit. Weird mind games like his brothers and father always played. There was some kind of trick to this he was sure. 

What that trick was.... he still wasn’t sure. If that stranger wasn’t so insistent on playing his own games they’d get out of this so much faster. He let out a frustrated grunt, ruffling his own hair before kicking off from the wall. He had to find that asshole.
