A Jihadist extremist told this female Lebanese news anchor to shut up, so she cut off his microphone.

Karaki was interviewing Hani Al-Seba’i about the phenomenon of Christians joining Islamic groups like ISIS. Al-Seba’i is a Sunni scholar who fled to London after he was sentenced in an Egyptian court to 15 years in prison for being a part of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. The United Nations considers the group to be an affiliate of al Qaeda.

But despite Al-Seba’i’s extreme ties, Karaki didn’t back down when he disrespected her on Al-Jadeed TV after she politely tried to redirect his historical tangent. Instead of taking his guff, she cut off his microphone when she decided she’d had enough.

In honor of International Women’s Day, I thought it would be interesting to introduce people to several names of important Muslim women in history that they may not have encountered before. Although the names of such extraordinary figures as the Empress Theodora, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Joan of Arc, Anne Boleyn, Caterina Sforza, and Elizabeth I are generally well-known, their counterparts in the medieval and early modern Muslim world are not. Women played an important role in the pre-modern Muslim world as scholars, poets, mystics, rulers, and warriors. This is a very short list of some of them.

At a population level, it is much better to be social than it is to be smart.

I hate to say it but so far From Urbanization to Cities is really boring. Bookchin goes all the way back to Catal Huyuk, a civilization which existed 9,000 years ago. It’s very anthropological and archaeological and seems to be centered (the second chapter, at least) on where the citification emerged from the tribe in ancient civilization. Is this really necessary I want to talk about capitalism and urbanization not go on a fucking archaeological dig

I think you should read Durkheim as a man who believes himself a diagnostician or an observer. He isn't making value judgments so much as he is describing the how that he sees. That is the tradition he is coming from, one which considers itself to be doing empirical work.

Should the left be a scientific and materialist enterprise guided by social and literary theory but committed to the physical realities around it? Or should it be a largely intellectual venture centered on social theory but doing little about it? The latter is the academic left it feels like. Abd unfortunately maybe it has colonized too much of the working left, leaving no real American labor. I think socialists and anarchists need to redevote themselves away from Nietzsche and poststructuralism and what have you and focus instead on understanding the economy and psychology and materialism. We need a core from which to work. We need to make decisions off empirical data and to gather data so we know what works. We need to be able to reflect and build upon our accomplishments.
