Preparing my parachute

Between the bad principle and the incompetent implementation of Tumblr's new policies, I'm about done with this website. I came for cheesecake and discourse and I'm not sticking around for just discourse. Any further posting will be at sptrashcan.blogspot.com. I'll be announcing any new posts at my Twitter @spittingtrash, but I won't be following anyone there because Twitter makes me sad. If I decide to join any other social media networks, I'll mention it here.

I'm genuinely disappointed that it has come to this. Tumblr management has always been of questionable competence, but the fundamental design of the platform has some features that I'll really miss, and the community that came to take advantage of those features includes some quality people. I wish you all the best.

like, the entire point of the gerrymandering thing is that the house is the one that’s been aggressively gerrymandered. the senate is a lot fairer, in general; this year, it was rough on the dems because of the 27:8 ratio, where democrats were defending 27 seats and republicans 8 (or maybe it was 28:7, i can’t remember). but that’s not “biased”. and no, it shouldn’t be abolished for being like that, because it’s not actually the problem. i don’t see anything that makes me think the senate is in some innate way broken, it’s been bouncing back and forth my whole life, that’s normal, that’s working as designed.

and obviously, pointing this out is a grave crime and merits being silenced and unpersoned, because that’s how shitty politics do.

years from now, when the balance of power has shifted, remember: the problem is not the political party, it’s the attitude. in the long run, the problem is going to be the people who want anything that opposes them declared bad and abolished, and any opposition to their views silenced. because those people are the same everywhere, regardless of their party or their stance.

i’m not saying the democrats and republicans are interchangeable. obviously, they’re not. but i will say that the demagogues and would-be demagogues are interchangeable, and that i do not fear them any less just because i happen to agree with the stances they’re arguing for on a given topic. a demagogue who wants the absolute suppression of anyone who hates people like me is not less dangerous to me than a demagogue who wants people like me eliminated. they will both, eventually, realize that i have to go for them to win.

So, here's an actual argument toward the problem with the Senate. There are two senators per state, regardless of population. That means that people who live in low-population states are over-represented in the Senate: Wyoming's 500k people have the same number of senators as California's nearly 40 million people, so a resident of Wyoming has 80 times more influence on the Senate than a resident of California. Low-population states tend to be rural states (with some exceptions), and rural states tend to be conservative (again, with some exceptions). The Senate also has significant powers that the House of Representatives does not, such as approving executive appointments to the judiciary and key bureaucratic positions. I'd say the representation differential in the Senate is actually a reasonable thing to be concerned about.

This wasn't terribly hard to explain, and because I know you, I know that it wasn't a waste of time to explain it. I think that the developing norm of not engaging in dialogue with critics is not great, but I also know that the norm didn't develop in a vacuum but rather due to bad actors who deliberately request further engagement they don't actually care about to waste other people's time. You can't just say "I'm not a time-waster" because that's just what a time-waster would say... it's a hard problem.

I just finished up the first download content Episode for Spider-Man on PS4, called The Heist.

It’s short and doesn’t change things up much from the main story in terms of gameplay, but the Black Cat missions are fun and the story is great!

Can’t wait to play more when Episode 2 drops.

Until I read the text I had a moment where I wondered if this was a preview shot from a new Spider-Man movie. I don't know if that says more about the graphics quality of modern games, the degree to which modern films are computer generated, or my own lack of discernment...

In “Family Traits”, Thomas Romain takes the character drawings of his two young sons and reinterprets them as beautiful illustrations.

Not seeing more of these is one of my very few regrets about quitting Twitter.

there’s this tendency on tumblr to promote books or movies or whatever by listing their… idk what to call it… intersectionality score? like “this is about a non-binary disabled mongolian and a lesbian abuse survivor” ok nice but is it a romance or a murder mystery or what?

i’m as hungry for representation as anyone else but i do choose my fiction by what the dang story is about idk about y’all

so maybe try to remember to mention that in passing

yeah like jem and i have had a bunch of conversations about our fantasy novel like that— we want it to be as diverse and representative as actual real life is, not a bland whitewashed shitshow, but tumblr’s really joyless, finger-waggy sort of promotion of diverse fiction really turns us off. like when someone posts ‘do you like lesbians? you should read this book!’ i’m like, no? thanks? i saw a book that was being promoted as pretty much just ‘this has a woman who’s x, a woman who’s y, and a woman who’s z, and none of them are ever objectified or disrespected!’ like ok but what’s the plot. don’t Girls Can Do It To at me and not tell me what the It even is! or that there’s gays that don’t die and i should be excited about it when you totally undersell whether they’re not dying at being pirates or spies or starship captains or what.

like i definitely want to write a fantasy novel that’s nothing but a daring parade of multiracial bisexuality from one end to the other but also i want it to be a good fantasy novel, not half a bland romance and half a lecture on inclusivity.

edit: i don’t mean to take a dig at romance as a genre. just bland romances. like the ‘this could be anything from a bad harry/draco to a bad dean/castiel to a bad tony/steve’ kind of bland.
