All the English names in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End are... a bit dumb.
They're all German but, but not German names, rather, they're just random German words?
Frieren: comes across as cold-hearted even though she isn't... and her name means 'being cold', not cold-hearted, cold as in being outside in the winter.
Himmel: The oh so brave and kind-hearted, blue haired hero's name means "Sky" or "heaven"
Heiter: the cheery priest... his name also means cheery
Eisen: the strong dwarf whose name means... iron.
Fern: the girl whose always a bit distant... her name means far away.
All the names just feel a bit on the nose when you speak German. Here are some of my favorite examples:
Übel: she's ruthless and brutal... and her name literally means "bad", "vile" or just straight up "evil"
Laufen: can move really fast... her name means "Running"
Denken: is really smart, which is why he's named "thinking"
And my personal favorite: Lügner is an evil demon who deceives humans... his name literally translates to "liar"
finally i am being vindicated about the horrible Viz translation of Dead Dead Demons. i was fighting for my life when that thing came out. everyone was against me. genuinely gratified to see the readership has turned against it in the intervening years
i feel very defensive about Fat Handsome Brother and Ouran's relationship and banter in particular because it is so similar to my and my brother's relationship, and how we gently tease our long-suffering mother with dire imprecations and hyperbolic descriptions of our nonsense activities. john werry i hope you stand up too fast and hit your head on a cabinet door
Reminds me of the official translation of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, that kind of implies the protagonist is a slave.
The manga is about Alpha, a sapient, basically human robot who runs a little cafe as humanity is slowly dying out decades after some unnamed catastrophe.
She doesn't own the cafe, the actual owner is out traveling.
Official translation on the left, fan translation on the right.
Throughout the manga, it's made very clear that both Alpha, and all the other robots in the story, are their own people. Humans don't treat them any differently, the robots live their own lives with their own jobs and relationships, and none of them "belong" to anyone.
Which makes this little change from "Owner," which could be a nickname or just referring to the fact that he owns the cafe, to "My Owner" so jarring and out of place. "Yeah, she sees herself as the property of some guy, no biggie."
"Left me at the shop" and "Entrusted the shop to me" also have a very different feeling.
The fan translation is also overall just... better.
"She must polish it constantly" = She treasures the gun and takes good care of it.
"She musta been stroking it all the time" = Stroking it?? What, like a pet or something???
They also didn't even bother giving the manga an official English title, for some reason.
She's such a little weirdo freak, I love it.
shirahama is a paneling god
Not only that, but her attention to detail is also fucking insane.
For example, this is the page following this double spread.
And here is a comparison with the little bit we can see of the next page in the book drawn in the double spread:
She drew the next page in the picture book as the next page in the manga! How cool is that?!
And there are so many pages in this manga that look like they came straight out of an Art Nouveau picture book (very minor spoilers ahead):
There's no practical reason for Shirahama to do any of this other than the love of the game.
DOROHEDORO - SEASON 2
Creator: Q Hayashida Year: 2026 Studio: MAPPA
The Coppersmith's Bride is a cute, wholesome, and funny little manga.
But when I read it, I can't help but feel like Shinzo Abe's ghost is looking over my shoulder while whispering, "Don't you want to get married at age 18? And then start a family in your tiny hometown where the average age is somewhere in the middle 50s while keeping a traditional Japanese craft alive? Doesn't this manga make that look reaaallly enticing??"
The dialogue in this series is so realistic, really helps you get more immersed in the story. Makio’s conversation with her ex feels so natural and you can feel how concerned she is about handling things with Asa correctly because she knows she’s battling depression. Oversleeping is a classic symptom of depression, so much is happening so quickly around Asa and she can’t process it so sleeping is probably the only thing she feels she can control and allows her to escape the madness.
Notice how Makio brings up “The smallest remark could change her life” which is a callback to the nasty things Asa’s mom told her before she died. Makio’s so sweet and cognizant of how crucial a time this is for her niece and wants to do things right. I respect her so much, she’s such a beautiful person inside and out.

"Journal with Witch (Ikoku Nikki)" TV Anime episode 1 stills
Air Date: January 4, 2026
Makio Kodai (35), a novelist, cannot bear to see her niece Asa (15) being passed around by relatives at the funeral of her sister and her husband, and decides to take her in on the spur of the moment. However, although she took her niece home, she came to her senses the next day and her natural shyness kicked in. Makio had forgotten how unsuitable she was to live with someone. Asa, on the other hand, is not shy and agrees to live with Maki, an "adult who is not like an adult," in an unusual but honest way. This is the story of when two polar opposite worlds awkwardly try to interact.
katie jane garside
Garside is also a musician who's been making fucking incredible music since the nineties
She was the frontwoman of the bands Daisy Chainsaw, QueenAdreena, and Ruby Throat. She also released a solo album called "Lullabies In A Glass Wilderness" under the name Lalleshwari.
She's currently active in a duo called "liar, flower" and their latest album was released like a month ago (December 2025).
Her music ranges from punk rock to calm and quiet a cappella, all the way to 18-minute-long experimental tracks.
Despite all that, she's not all that famous and more of a hidden gem.
What he fuck is this anime even about??
the commander's silly rabbit..........
