“uh, mr. stark. i don’t know if that’s technically how you’re supposed to do it...” peter had come to a stop, supporting himself against the wall. it had been his idea, a spontaneous one at that, to go ice skating. but even he never would have imagined it would have been as entertaining as it was. he took a moment to stifle a laugh underneath his glove. “do you need a hand?”

“here, brought you some hot chocolate.” peter held it out with a smile. he hadn’t known what to expect when he’d asked mj if she wanted to walk around town and look at the lights. but here they both were, and he was already struggling to hide his excitement. “i thought it would make things more festive.” he chuckled before taking a sip of his own, immediately regretting his decision as the liquid hit his tongue. “probably should let that cool a minute. very hot.”

"whoa whoa WHOA...hey, heads up down there!” peter hollered at the person on the ground, narrowly avoiding crashing into them as landed hard on the grass, skidding to a stop. a muffled ow came from beneath the mask as he sat up, followed by a deep, dramatic sigh. “oh man, i can’t believe someone actually witnessed that.”

♕ —- Casually, MJ looked up from her cultural anthropology book from where she was relaxing while Peter was supposed to be on shift. “Not everyone can compete with those eight-legged senses of yours, oh spider-lord,” she said as she marked her place and stood up to look over at the game in question. It was one she knew. “Yeah, I’ll go a round,” she shrugged as she stepped forward and took off her jacket before she draped it over a chair. “Since you already put in the tokens.”

a faint blush spread across his checks, and peter ducked his head with an awkward laugh. it was a silly nickname, but also endearing in the way he felt with whatever names she gave him. he moved over to give her room, dropping the tokens in as the start screen popped up in front of them. he pressed a few buttons to get to the song selection screen. “stop me if you see one you like,” he said, scrolling through the list of songs. "don’t feel like you have to go easy on me either,” he added with a grin.

“Yeah, but I have it on good authority this one is pretty safe, kid.” Tony looked over at the boy who had in all ways but legally documented on paper become his son over the past few years with a sigh. He knew his reassurance was in vain. Tony had found himself in an look of anxiety before, questioning their safety. He walked over to place his hand at the back of Peter’s neck, giving it a gentle squeeze, before letting it drop to rest on his shoulder. “What do you think could go wrong? Taking yourself out of the equation, of course.” He looked at Peter. “Because there’s really nothing you could do to jeopardize the portal’s failproof capabilities, Pete.”

the brief reassuring hand on his neck helped to ground him. peter trusted tony with his life. he’d seen more, done more  — way more than he’d ever done. than he might ever do. if tony told him the portal was safe, then it was logical that he would believe him. that he should believe him. but with that came the fear that young people had. adults would tell you things were okay...even when they weren’t. “i don’t know. maybe i’m overreacting. but you know me and my luck. i just...there’s a lot here i want to protect.”

“hey mj! you wanna go a round with me? i just put some tokens in.” it wasn’t unusual for peter to play the games at the pizza planet arcade more than he attended to them. “everybody else got frustrated cause i kept winning. superhuman agility and all that.” he laughed, the lights from the dancing game illuminating the cheesy grin on his face — it seemed like he was always smiling like a complete idiot when she was around. “or there’s guitar hero if you’re feeling that.” @blkdchlia​

“i just…i just feel like something bad is bound to happen.” he knew happy valley was safe. well, safer than new york. safer than a lot of other places he’d been. but he wasn’t a naïve kid anymore. things could happen anywhere. and with the luck he’d had in the past, that could very well mean here. “i mean, portals aren’t always failproof.” peter shrugged, digging his sneaker into the grass. “i just can’t mess up again.” @tstcrks​

“…I hope you have a finished version of this spreadsheet,” Jacques muttered. He didn’t look up from his laptop to face the other or see whose presence he had sensed. Sure, it was a public coffee shop, but he’d assumed that he’d be allowed time to get some work done. 

“oh, um, no. sorry. just biochemistry homework.” peter readjusted the strap of his backpack, debating for a second whether he should just leave. outside the four walls of their dorm room, peter rarely interacted with jacques. given their contrasting personalities, it was probably for the best. still, he didn’t want to be rude and leave the shop without at least a word or two. “what kinda spreadsheet are you working on?”
