Daily Hellenistic Prayers

-note: this isn’t a list of actual prayers, but a list of things you can pray about and for which God-

Thank Helios in the morning for the sun and also for keeping you warm in the cold (winter)

Pray to Aphrodite for self care acts like showers, skincare, etc. 

Also pray to Aphrodite to improve self love

Thank Demeter for the food you eat

Thank Hestia for a safe, comfortable home

Ask Hermes for safe travel, whether on a walk, drive, or flight

Pray to Apollo to ease sickness or thank him for keeping you healthy

Also pray to Apollo for inspiration if you create art, music, or poetry

Thank Hades for financial aid and recovering from grief or depression

Pray to Athena before studying, before a class, or before a test to aid in wisdom 

Pray to Hypnos for a night of well rested sleep

Pray to Morpheus for good dreams

Pray to Ares for strength (be it physical strength to go to the gym or whatever activity you’re doing)

Pray to Zeus to ask for the ability to make the right decision

Also pray to Zeus to thank him for the weather

For those who struggle, know that the gods understand that mortality is incredibly arduous. Do not see your suicidality or depression as ungratefulness, because they do not blame you for your hardships & disabilities. All humans are flawed, & they know this.

Thank the gods for the small things, the things that give us comfort in this world.

Thank the gods for how your skin softens after a hot shower,

Thank the gods for the softness of clean sheets,

Thank the gods for the warmth of a meal,

& the coldness of ice cream.

Thank the gods for the craftsmanship of a painting,

PSA: Aphrodite isn't just romantic love, the ancient Greeks had 7 words for love!

eros: your typical love, romance, sex, all that. typically what Aphrodite is known for.

philautia: self-love (which is SO SO important!)

storge: parental love, the bond that parents and children have with each other.

ludus: playful love - banter, teasing, flirting as a joke with your friends.

pragma: longstanding love, that is built upon trust and respect for one another. can be any type of relationship.

xenia: hospitality, a love and care for strangers and the people around you.

agape: true, unconditional love. the love everyone should aim to feel for others and to let others feel for them.

Lady Aphrodite is all of this! She tends to like hearing about relationships (in my experience), and She's always willing to lend some advice!

One of my favorite Homeric Hymns because of how unusual it is. It serves to remind us that Ares is a protector, a leader, and a guide.

Supremely strong Ares,

golden-helmeted chariot-rider,

tough-hearted, shield-carrying
