Watching this video will make some of my friends cry in a HAPPY way, others will feel REVOLTION tied to our very human urges to avoid The Taboo, and many of my friends will feel VIOLATED as if they've been forced to observe a direct assault on God. For those of you in this last camp, know that as a citizen of the US, I will lay down my life to defend your right to believe that the only marriage sanctified by God, is one between a man and a woman, and to defend your religion's right to only perform marriages that adhere to that religion's standards. But know also, that as a citizen of the US, I will stand by all our citizens who demand equal treatment under our cival system. Cival marriage should never directly link to ANY religious institution, or imply the approval of God(s). Our cival laws are not Baptist, Hindu, Catholic, Muslim, or Quaker- they're agnostic. History: America was settled and developed primarily on a Western, Protestant, philosophy- but never wedded to The Church because America was a refuge for Christian sects and cults that couldn't integrate with each other AND/OR state religions in the old world. MUCH LIKE TODAY. One massive difference between our founding fathers and modern evangelicalism, is EDUCATION and experience. Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Hamilton... they were all FAR better educated (due in great part to their wealth and the expectation that wealth brings responsibility), than most of us could ever hope to be. They didn't leave religious dogma out of the constitution because they thought it was a given, they left it out because they knew it was up to each man to determine his own morality and religious (or agnostic) alignment. I know that I personally struggle mightily with the BigTen (commandments- not college sports) but I don't believe that legislating morality is helpful or Just. Free will requires that we choose our path, and own our choices. Social welfare (literal use of the term) dictates protections from others (age of consent, mental ability, protections of civil rights, etc...) but compelling adherence to religious law would be trying to force "belief". Until we are willing to make the top ten commandments (which include adultry and the disrespect of your parents) a legal issue, the gender of citizens seeking a marriage license should be totally irrelevant!
