Thank you! This is one of the nicest asks I've received on this website so the question caught me so off guard . but i mean. like yeah man what gave it away.
A lot of Fletch's arc revolves around performing for others so thoroughly that you forget you own personality, and the way that trading your self/morals/opinions for a more palatable self image hurts almost everyone involved. You can imagine how being gay factors into this. (He's also a bit of a critique of modern liberalism so I hope your friend is prepared for that. )
To that end his relationship with Ava does have some romantic undertones. They like each other, but Fletch is so deep in the closet he's unable to identify the difference between friendship and romantic attraction, and Ava is just a very lonely person who is latching on hard to the only affection she's had in a while. I do this only to make myself really really really sad about Ava.
Whether or not he actually figures out his identity and ends up with another man is something I plan to leave somewhat ambiguous due to a number of circumstances and my own priorities irt storytelling.
