It was obvious that his sister had put quite a lot of thought into the gift that she presented him with, and he would be lying if he didn’t admit that it softened his heart just a tad. He listened to the explanation that she gave him for bringing the drawing, and nodded as she finished. He wasn’t capable of echoing her sentiment yet; that was far too much emotion far too fast, but he wanted her to know that he did appreciate the gesture. Perhaps that’s why he simply responded with, “I remember making that.”
Mel wasn’t expecting much from the gesture - even his acknowledgement of the tale is pleasing. She’d been here to see Patrick every day since he’d been committed, and this was the first time she’d seen any part of his exterior begin to thaw. Maybe it isn’t much to someone who wasn’t capable of committing every detail she came across to memory, but it was everything to Melissa. She smiles. “You were very proud of it at the time. I think it’s still my favorite piece of art you’ve created - your songs are quite excellent, though.”
