I finally found the original full color image from the Lifted cover, which shows the actual diorama colors. Conor had initially wanted it to be pretty crazy colors, and then it turned into an old book idea later on and became black and white in the final version. When I was making it, it took a while to find the exact branch I wanted to use for this. I had a picture of it in my mind but couldn't find anything that I liked. I finally found this one next to the railroad tracks, up by the power plant in north Omaha when I was taking a walk up there.
Same as the No Beginning to the Story EP diorama that preceded this one, the base is crumpled up newspaper with chicken wire over top, covered with dyed joint compound that I textured with my fingers. The background twigs are real, I just jabbed them into the base before it dried. The backdrop is blue and black kids tempera finger paint smeared on a poster board. I made the people and animals by wrapping cotton batting around bent wire armatures, and then sewing the coverings and details onto those.
I am now determined to find a way to use "ice cream freezer" as an insult again.
