quotev and cohost refugees
hii, i've been thinking about quotev and the very few replacement sites that have tried to pop up but either failed or we just stopped hearing about it. now i'm no coder so i cannot even begin to make a new replacement site but i am an ideaswoman so i'd like to imagine i was making a site. and i'd love to hear from ex-quotev users and also ex-cohost users and whatever other similar site users that have been displaced. i'd like to create the best imaginary site idea, and see where it goes.
so i'd love to hear what you liked and didn't like on your site of choice and what you think would be cool to add to a new site. i'll go first.
what i love/loved about quotev
the story-writing element. sure, i've used it less over the years but i began my time on Q as a fanfic writer and i still like to dabble occasionally. i also like how you can basically private your stories to only your followers by posting them only to your page and then privating your published tab. i haven't been able to move any of my writing from quotev because of this because other websites don't have a similar feature.
the feed, ofc. it was nice to be able to see what my friends were doing in real time, instead of catching up on it whenever i remember to check their pages. also it was cute seeing people have feed convos.
messages and groups!! its not enough to just comment on stories and activity posts. i want to be able to privately message people!! i want to be able to create groups for story planning or roleplaying.
the layout. i've been trialling a lot of other sites that have various different features and it really makes me miss the layout of quotev. everything is basically on your profile so its really easy to access, and you used to be able to private whatever you chose.
what I'd add
in my circle of friends on Q, we'd create ask books where friends could ask questions in the comments and we'd answer them in the book. i think it would be so cute to have an ask box feature like tumblr's to allow anonymous asks and whatnot.
i've tried a few sites like spacehey which have a bunch of customisation so i would maybe add a bit more customisation to a new website. not heaps ofc, especially since if it has a similar layout to Q, it would also have the option to customise your about already. but maybe something subtle, like being able to change the accent colour. and maybe the option to code your layout yourself
i've heard people talk in regards to other replacement sites about adding multiple accounts to the same main account, similar to tumblr sideblogs so you can access them all from the same account and i definitely think that would be good. helpful because i always have at least 3 quotev accounts at once.
anyway, yeah. this is just me rambling basically. feel free to add your thoughts :)) i just thought this could be a fun little way to discuss our ideal nerd social media experience lol
hi hi !! im a quotev nerd. i agree with what you'd add and what you loved overall - generally, i found quotev was perfect for my needs. i'm a writer, a yapper, and a roleplayer.. she was paradise.
i think the idea of official groups could be neat, which existed on quotev (only for the writers, which like- fair! that's one of the core functions!) but i think like- "quotev tech support" or maybe a group for layout-makers (which there was a big community-run one but you know what i mean!!)
i think one thing it would absolutely HAVE to have no questions asked is the same text editor, which sounds terribly specific but part of why i don't write as much anymore is because i used journals, and now i can't have journals!! (i'm ip banned to elaborate. made too many accounts.)
i think colored text is also one- only in abouts and quizzes/stories i think, though.
better genres honestly.. what if i want to add a super specific not-really-genre to my story? let me do that. idk. it turns out i don't have much to add... quotev was perfect in its original form mostly, privatizing everything ever from people outside your friends was so taken for granted.
omg yes I know what you mean about the text editor. I didn't realise it was somewhat unique to q until I did a trial run of dreamwidth a few months ago which has a similar style editor
right!! ive been using dreamwidth sometimes but its really just strictly for writing nonsense for me (like the fucking quotev essay im writing in another tab right now HAHA) i do think dw is neat tho <3
