Bruce's Version (2014)
HD Video commissioned as part of Artists' Cinema organised by CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand
Bruce’s version experiments with the deconstruction of cinematic mechanism. With digitisation and hyper-real digital rendering software, the film reflects on the internality of moving-image production and distributional infrastructures by focusing on the enigmatic work of German filmmaker Werner Herzog. As artist Jon Rafman put it ‘we don’t even know whether we are celebrating something and saying its great and affirming it or if we are engaging in an ironic critique and mocking it. We almost collapse the two’ (1). Bruce’s version acts as a mode of critique towards forms of self-reflective spectacle.
