I sincerely hope that I’m not walking into a mine field with this- I am completely naive about gifmaking (appreciate the context earlier today about how much work goes into them- that was very eye opening!). I don’t know that I fully understand etiquette in this world. When you say people are reposting your gifs does that mean they’re sharing them on this and other websites as if they made them? It seems like you and other gif makers are pro- reblogs, is that correct? I always kind of figured people put gifs out in the world to see them shared, and I’m ashamed to say I never gave much thought to where they came from. Your posting of your experience has been eye-opening for me and I appreciate all the context and education.

Yes, when I talk about reposting my gifs, I mean other fans are saving them to their phones/pcs and uploading to other sites as either their own or just to add some pizazz to their post.

Yes, gifmakers/creators on tumblr want other users to reblog their work. It's the reblogs that spread the content around the site. That's how tumblr works, or used to work. Nowadays, users aren't reblogging, they are saving and reposting the gifs that others have put their time and energy into.

There are some gifmakers who make gifs to be saved and used by others (sometimes with credit and other times they are ok with using them without it, they usually request a like/reblog if anything). Roleplay blogs did it all the time back in the day. They would make resource blogs with gif packs so rp blogs could use them in their writings. Most of those gifs were basic with little to no coloring or sharpening. They were just to be used to convey emotion and the such.

Gifmakers like myself and others use HD media to make the high quality gifs you see. We spend a lot of time sharpening, coloring and formatting our gifs to post as an completed set. They are not meant to be broken up and used by other users. Reposters are taking hours of work and reposting it with little to no regard for the person who spent the time making it. It comes to a point where it becomes so frustrating that gifmakers had to start watermarking their gifs with their usernames. Watermarking gifs allows gifmakers to be able to undoubtedly identify their gifs when reposted because watermarking won't stop people from stealing them. It also shows other users that those gifs do not belong to the user who reposted them.

I appreciate the message and I'm glad that my experience has brought attention to issues that a lot of gifmakers are having to people who didn't know otherwise.

Fandom is fandom. The good, bad and the ugly. It is what it is. I guess because I was a gifmaker who had no chill and was constantly posting I wasn't allowed to block anyone who might be interested in reblogging one of my many gifsets. My tumblr experience be damned because other fans needed access to my gifs. How silly of me.

So I'm on a giffing hiatus until Cry Wolf drops. Until then... stay safe Anon. 🫶🏼

the [insert celeb name]edit tag is kinda awful these days~ like a lot of the times you have to wade through people's random ass posts or writers trying to get their fics out there for more exposure and it's just... this new era of tumblr is A Mess, to say the least.

i'm sad to see you 'go', but i do understand every single feeling you're feeling (gifstealing wasn't so rampant back in the day but i quit gif-ing a looong time ago when people just started to like instead of rb more, yknow? sad~)

hope we'll see you gif-ing again maybe when cry wolf drops or when pitt season 3 airs, but if not, totally understand where you're coming from, love.

I whole-heartedly agree with your assessment of the state of tumblr these days. A whole ass mess.

It really wasn't. I mean, I got reposters back then too but it was pretty much contained here on tumblr. Not the case these days. Now they are reposted just about everywhere. It always bums me out when a former gifmakers tell me they stopped giffing because of fandom. I've taken big breaks before, of my own will and when I was in between fandoms, so this isn't new for me. It just feels extra depressing with the Shawn fandom because I still WANT to gif, but sharing them on tumblr has lost its luster. I take breaks so I don't quit completely. That will be a depressing day for sure.

I'll eventually come back. I'm waiting for that Cry Wolf trailer to drop and I'll be giffing him when the show premiers. I won't be able to resist the new content, but giffing his previous roles is on pause. Well, I'm still giffing I'm just not posting them to tumblr right now.

I know nothing about making gifs. What goes into giffing?

Ho boy. Okay so first I need the media. I want HD copies of whatever media I'm going to gif, so I usually use torrents for tv shows and movies and youtube for anything I can find via torrents. HD copies are big files, so it takes up a lot of space on my laptop. I have a few external hard drives to combat that.

Anyway... after I have my download, it's time to screencap the scene I want to gif. I use the VLC media player to do this. I cap each frame one by one. it's tedious and time consuming. Sometimes I mess up and I have to start the capping process over again because I need every frame (that's a me thing). If I skip a frame or more it makes the gif look choppy. I don't like that. It's also not just a few frames I'm capping. It can range from 50 to over 200. Depends on the shot I'm giffing. I like to take a lot of frames so I can narrow down exactly what I want from that scene/moment.

After I've capped what I want to gif, it's time to load those into photoshop. I load them and now I have to format, crop and color the gif. Make sure the caps have loaded right. Change the frame rate. Crop it and change the size dimensions so it can be uploaded to tumblr. Too big, tumblr will reject it. Gotta fix it, trim off frames, until I get it to the right dimensions for tumblr to upload it. Now I have to sharpen and color it. That's where the magic happens. I spend a good portion of my time fidgeting with the sharpening settings until I get the result I want. Then I start coloring, which also takes up a lot of time. Using different filters, layers, adjustments and other tools until I am (mostly) satisfied with the end result.

Save that one (make sure it's under 10mb or tumblr will tell me to fuck off) and start all over again for the next one until I get my set done. Giffing is not something that takes a few minutes. It takes hours depending on how many gifs you want in a set.

I'm super basic about my gifs. There are gifmakers on here who do amazing work with their gifs. They blend gifs together and use templates and textures to make these beautiful works of art. I can only imagine the time and effort they put into those. They're brilliant.

It comes with aches and pains but I love it. It's fun once you get the hang of it and seeing it all come together is so awesome. Sometimes I can get a set done in a few hours and other times I'll do it over the course of a few days.

I hope I explained that well enough for you to have some idea what goes into making a gif, especially if your using photoshop.

Oh I'm not giffing for fandom, just me. I won't be posting them to tumblr or anywhere else.

I love giffing and yeah posting/sharing them was the end goal but sharing here just doesn't bring the same satisfaction as it once did. Too many likes, not enoygh reblogs, and the reposters. I'm... frustrated. So I'm going back to just giffing for me. It's my go-to hobby and how I like to decompress after work.

I'm sorry babes, but you won't be seeing new gifs from me right now. Once that Cry Wolf trailer drops you MIGHT see me giffing that, but everything else is on pause.
