The Best Graduation Gift Ever
Sometimes our wishes are totally irrational. This is one of those times.
It's about 6am and morning prayers are echoing through the streets of Arusha. I'm too excited to sleep; I'm in Tanzania now celebrating the graduation of our very first class from primary school.
In my heart, for so long, I've carried a perhaps far-fetched wish that for graduation, I'd be able to give a truly epic gift to one boy & one girl from the school's first graduating class.
I want them to visit the US. To meet and hug in person so many of you who have poured your love & gratitude into them over the past four years. To experience the kind of learning only travel to far-off places can bring. To participate, in person, in our Epic Thanks efforts this November to raise the funds we'll need to ensure their secondary school will open in January. And to sing their little hearts out as part of a program & concert we've planned with OneVoice also to raise funds for their secondary school.
Perhaps most of all, I want to give them this gift so they grow up with hearts that dare to hope, like mine, for ridiculous, unimaginable possibilities. For themselves, their community, their country and the world we share. I want them to know, beyond any doubt, that even their wildest dreams just might come true.
To bring them, and Mama Lucy as their chaperone, I need to raise $5,000 by this Friday - so that I can give them their gift on graduation day.
That means we have about 48 hours to make a miracle happen. 50 of us would need to chip in $100. Or 100 of us $50. or 250 $20. That's all.
This isn't an Epic Change fundraiser. It's truly a graduation gift for children so many of us have grown to love - and who have taught us so much by becoming our friends.
I hope you'll join me in filling their graduation day with unexpected magic. Just select an amount from the drop-down list & click "Give" below...
UPDATE (6PM EST 9/22):
In addition to the total displayed on the widget, $650 has been pledged offline. So we've already raised $1,770 and have just $3,230 to raise in the next 18 hours - by midnight EST on 9/23 - just in time for their graduation ceremony in Tanzania!!! ASANTE SANA to all those kind, generous souls who are making this possibility a reality!
dear universe: please light the way. (Taken with Instagram at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port)
give love.
The Road Ahead
The truth is I do not know what 2011 will bring.
I look forward to the serendipity of it. The discovery. The surprise.
It's not that I have no plans. Quite the opposite: I have too many. And the truth is, the universe will reveal new unanticipated directions in which I'll also travel. Those will likely be the best journeys of all.
Here are the plans I've made for the future I want. They will not all happen this year. Some I'll sacrifice for others. Some require the universe to happily conspire. Some the universe will conspire against because it knows better than I.
So be it. I'll still write them down with all the hope in my heart.
I hope to ...
Marry a man who believes i'm the greatest gift he's ever been given. Like Avi believes about Rella.
Deepen friendships with people (like Jeffrey, Mama Lucy, Jen, Ehon, Amy, Maggie, Cate, Gil, Lee, Amanda, and you) who challenge and inspire me to be better than I am today.
Renew relationships with old friends (like Kim, Pat, Angie, Tara and Janet) who know exactly who i've always been.
Inspire people to pour the very best they have to offer - every ounce of love, joy, hope, gratitude and courage - into making our world even more beautiful.
Create a tiny new life who teaches me to exude a special kind of love like Yael, Geoff and soon, Tamu.
Explore what's possible next with the merry band of superheros who have conspired to create Epic Change.
Take a road trip across the US with a few of the children in Tanzania so we can thank so many who've given so much.
Feel truly beautiful for at least one moment.
Care for my body so that it can fully support all my soul has in store for it. (with a little help from Marianne & Amanda.)
Dance again with total abandon.
Stop judging myself so harshly so I can stop fearing that others are judging me too.
Make sure my family knows they are loved by being fully present in the moments we share.
Relaunch Epic Change as a hub where we conspire globally to invest our whole hearts in hope. (with a little help from Lulu & Shivaas.)
Further explore my tempestuous relationships with bigness and money.
Spend more time outdoors in environments not yet sullied with concrete.
Meditate.
Practice trust & let go a little so that others may lead, but hold fast enough that my creation never becomes my nemesis. (Did you know that until her death Anna Jarvis, who created Mother's Day, spent her family inheritance campaigning against the holiday she'd established?)
Reclaim Anna's original idea by making even more moms know they're loved this Mother's Day.
Find a cloak of invisibility.
Unleash even more grateful hearts on the world in November.
Watch Mama Lucy's seventh graders - Gladys, Glory, Leah, Phineas, Gideon & so many more - score at the top of their nation on Tanzania's annual exams this year.
See a school open in Nepal built, in part, by the gratitude of so many.
End the correlation between greed and power. (ok, maybe that'll take longer than a year.)
Write a book. And make a film. (Yeah, i know, this one too.)
Learn to speak Swahili. For real.
Spend time with friends in Tanzania, Nepal & Europe.
See a secondary school built in Arusha that will transform children I love into adults ready to define the future of a nation.
Magically (ok, i'll settle for intentionally) have the resources needed to do all of the above and more should the universe add to the list.
Love the world and those in it with all my heart.
I was inspired to write this post by my friend Lee, a truly beautiful soul who, with her soulmate & husband Gil, is embarking this January on a writing experiment called "30 Days of Truth."
one more note: I noticed myself writing the words conspire & inspire all over the place in the list above. And then I remembered, from my nerdy Latin classes, that the root of both words is "spiro" - to breathe. Conspire: to breathe with. Inspire: to breathe in. So add that to my list. Just breathe.

1.1.11
May health & happiness shine on those you love. May the world show you kindness. May you know you are beautiful. May you always have enough to share. May hope find you every time you look up. May your friends outnumber your fears. May you realize in every moment that you are more than good enough. May you truly be seen and heard. May you know you are loved. And, for all these things and so many more, may gratitude always fill your wide-open heart.
Today, I'm thankful for:
The reflected shadow of water dancing as a ray of light across the wall in my living room.
The unknown adventure I'm about to embark upon with a tiny redhead.
The children's home that will open next week in Tanzania. Built from love. And that Leah will live there.
The dog who told me she was sick so we could get her surgery in time.
The four text messages I got at midnight from the people I love most.
The space I'm creating to be all of who I am.
The dream for a better world that lives in the tender heart of a young man half the globe away.
The pure beauty of young love.
The kindness I'm cultivating for me. And the beautiful souls who are helping me do it.
The hope that the hurt I'm holding will evaporate soon leaving only the lustre of a lesson hard won.
The potential that exists inside me and you to create life and love.
The opportunity every moment, every day - but especially today - for fresh, brand-new beginnings and the bravery to leave behind what needs to be left.
The fortitude to hold fast to what we need, want and love most though years pass.
The possibility this one might be better than last.
May 1.1.11 mark a turning point for me and you.
More than ever, may we be love(d).

I need you to be all of who you are in order for me to be all that I am.
