"What we are" (Taichi/Koushirou Valentine's Day fic)
Short Fic Summary: Taichi has been working in Koushirou's company for several months now, but ever since the "Christmas Eve incident", things between him and Koushirou have been rather weird. An unexpected Valentine's Day gift gives him the glimpse of hope that their bond may be able to change after all...
(The "Christmas Eve incident" fic should have gotten posted before this one, but alas... I couldn't have finished it in time. Whoops. It'll be finished with a bit of a delay, promise! Until then - Happy Valentine's Day! 🧡💜)
Part of the "Coworkers Sequel": [My best friend is finally getting therapy and part of his healing process is becoming my employee] [Different]
Word Count: 1959
“I got chocolate today.”
Taichi had been sitting in Koushirou’s office for quite some time now, waiting for him to finish up for the day – which usually meant waiting for several hours, as he never managed to leave the workplace before 9 PM. It was precisely 8:40 PM now. Not that Taichi had checked his watch for the tenth time in the past five minutes… Or for the twentieth time in the past twenty.
It was only now – sitting on the office couch with Tentomon napping beside him – that he finally managed to gather enough courage to speak up. Say the words that had been lingering on his tongue all freaking Valentine’s Day.
“That shouldn’t really surprise you”, Koushirou said calmly without looking up from his computer setup. Taichi’s heart, however, couldn’t help but skip a beat.
“You think?”, he asked hoarsely, immediately clearing his throat. Man, he hadn’t expected to be that nervous, but Koushirou still didn’t look at him. Instead, he was just shrugging slightly.
“You’re underestimating your own popularity among our staff.”
“Eh…”, Taichi made intelligibly, clearing his throat again as he tried to catch a reaction – any reaction – from his boss-slash-friend. But no such luck so far. “I mean, I guess, I’m just irritated, since, you know… We’re not in school anymore and I thought obligatory chocolate wasn’t a thing in the white-blue-collar-world.”
Never in his life had chit-chat felt this awkward. Surely, when they had been in middle and high school, he had found himself collecting full bags of secret-admirer chocolate from his locker. He hadn’t been the most popular kid – but being one of the more prominent attacking players in the football club did gather some attention at least. He even remembered Koushirou collecting his own fair share of obligatory gifts – probably secret admirers from his computer club days. Neither of them had ever figured out who exactly had gifted them all these little things.
“Apparently, some things never change,” Koushirou said, a glimpse of a smile visible on his face and Taichi felt a lump in his chest. Just like back then, he only had bits and pieces, but this time he really wanted to know where it came from – only to find himself just as clueless as back then. Or rather, he did have a clue – but it didn’t make any sense.
“Yeah…”, Taichi murmured and then abruptly jumped up from the couch, ripping Tentomon out of his slumber.
He should have known that he couldn’t have continued to tip-toe around the issue. Heck, ever since Christmas, things between them were incredibly weird – which, as he knew, was his own fault –, additionally to Koushirou having become a master of giving him the silent treatment. And Taichi hated it. Hated that this was still the state of their bond, even after months of trying to mend it. Thus, today had been just the icing of the cake of Taichi being completely and utterly confused.
“Koushirou, listen”, he finally exclaimed as he approached the younger with a sense of apologetic sincerity. “I understand that you’re still mad at me for what happened and – yeah, I deserve that after everything I did, but you know… I can’t deal with the mixed signals here.”
This time, Koushirou actually turned around – and raised both eyebrows. Obviously, just as confused.
Back on Christmas Eve, when a Digimon had attacked Odaiba, Taichi had decided to act on his own and join Kabuterimon on the frontline – without Agumon by his side, without a functioning Digivice and without consulting Koushirou about it up front. He had acted on sheer instinct alone, wanting to overcome his own helplessness, taking some of the burden off of Koushirou’s shoulders… And yet, despite the successful mission, in a half-drunken state of frustration, they had gotten into a fight.
“What mixed signals?”, Koushirou underlined his confusion once more and the lump in Taichi’s chest grew to twice its size.
“You said I’m seeing all of this here as some type of exposure therapy and… Yeah, maybe it’s part of that, but it’s NOT everything!”
“Taichi-san, what are you talking about?”
Koushirou had been rightfully mad at Taichi – who had applied to work at his company to rebuild himself, to rediscover his strengths and confidence, to maybe, eventually reconnect with Agumon… And with all the bonds he had neglected. Things were still not perfect – but he had considered himself to be on the right track.
If only he could pinpoint where to go with Koushirou.
“I… I chose this place because I wanted to… Understand what I want. What I can do. And because I…”
He breathed in and out deeply. Just a bit more courage…
“I missed you, us. And I needed to figure out what the heck is going on and… What we are.”
Without replying immediately, Koushirou’s brows furrowed even more.
“Right now you seem pretty much out of it”, he said softly, “I believe I’m still missing some context…”
Getting more frustrated with himself – and his inability to get to the point –, but also with Koushirou’s non-descriptive expression, Taichi just bursted out:
“Why did you jump on my lap?!”
“What?!”
Back before they had started to argue, Koushirou had been encouraged by their marketing manager, Hideo Takano-san, to take one or two sips of alcohol to alleviate some of the stress Taichi’s had caused him. It had been Christmas Eve after hours after all… The main issue was that Koushirou didn’t take alcohol very well. In the sheer heat of the moment, he had pushed Taichi onto the couch – with himself on top of him –, confronting him, shouting, screaming…
Taichi wasn’t sure whether he pretended not to remember. He himself certainly hadn’t been able to forget. In fact, it hadn’t left his imagination ever since, leaving him second-guessing and wondering and now… There was a hopeful glimpse that was on the verge of dying again. Killed by Koushirou seemingly not knowing what he had done to him.
“A-and… Why did you gift me chocolate?”, Taichi almost screeched, pointing at an orange little package in his hand. “On Valentine’s Day of all days? This isn’t like you, at all, but, you know, for a moment I was… I was really glad? That you did forgive me and that there was a chance for us to make up and continue like things were or… I don’t know… Be more than that. And I… Didn’t realize how much I wanted that before getting a freaking Valentine’s gift from you.”#
Switching glances between the gift in Taichi’s hand and his face, Koushirou just stared at him – and his face had gotten significantly redder the longer the speech went on.
“… I didn’t.”
“… You didn’t… What?”
“The chocolate is not… It’s not from me.”
The lump in Taichi’s chest exploded and nausea filled his entire stomach.
“Huh?! But those are your initials!” Taichi pointed at the corner of the package, the Kanji for Koushirou’s surname and family name were neatly printed onto a little sheet of paper. “And you would never write a handwritten note, this is printed, that is EXACTLY what you would do and…”
Taichi was at a loss for words. And so was Koushirou, who had gotten up from his chair to take a closer look. He eyed it carefully, then turned around to Tentomon, who had gotten closer to them as well.
“Tentomon?”
“It’s not from me, even though it is a lovely idea…”, the Digimon chirped as he flew beside them and Taichi felt like the worst detective under the sun. If only the ground would swallow him whole – or maybe a Digimon should have mercy-killed him after all.
“That’s not what I had in mind. Did you notice anyone or anything weird?”
Tentomon only shook his head.
“Nothing out of the ordinary, but… It is odd. Why would anyone gift Taichi-han chocolate under the pretense it’s you…?”
As both Koushirou and Tentomon were in their own little world theorizing, Taichi’s knees turned all wobbly and he had to sit down at one of the nearby office chairs, burying his head in his hands.
“… Taichi-han? Are you okay?”, Tentomon eventually asked, but Taichi didn’t dare to look up.
“No… I’m an idiot.”
Shiho Kawashima-san had been too nice to prank him like that. Unless there was someone else in the company with the exact same initials as Koushirou and he had been too dumb to realize it. Just as clueless as he had always been and now, he had made a complete fool out of himself for some stupid obligatory chocolate. The first time he had felt ready to be fully honest with Koushirou after all these years, with all the realizations and anticipation… Which turned out to be delusions that weren’t even remotely realistic…
At some point, he sighed deeply, ready to face getting pitied – but then, to his surprise, he found a purple gift bag sliding onto his lap.
“… Huh?”
Koushirou was now hovering over him – and once again, Taichi couldn’t really decipher what the look on his face meant. Another glimpse of a smile, not pitiful, not belittling. Maybe… Bashful?
“THAT is my chocolate”, Koushirou confessed, shortly averting his gaze. “I had considered not giving it to you due to various… Complications, but… It seems to be a rather appropriate moment now.”
Blinking a few times, Taichi let out a loud laugh. How was this man ever so unpredictable to him?!
“See, that’s what I mean, I don’t get your signals!”
Koushirou joined in, chuckling and shaking his head.
“You already told me it wasn’t just therapy to you,” Koushirou elaborated slowly. “And even if it was… Even if I was suspicious at first. I…”
He stopped, for once seemingly at a loss himself – so Tentomon flew by to nudge his shoulder. Taichi still couldn’t stop staring at his figure.
“Koushirou-han…!”
“Genuinely speaking… I’ve missed us too”, Koushirous said after letting out a deep sigh. Perhaps Taichi hadn’t been the only one who couldn’t get the Christmas Eve incident out of his head. Or… Everything else, for that matter.
It made him feel less alone. And, more importantly, less delusional.
“Even if you have to keep shouting at me for doing reckless things?”, Taichi grinned, finally regaining a more relaxed grin that left Koushirou sighing – yet also grinning – once more.
“I seem to possess pretty masochistic tendencies after all.”
With that, Taichi found the energy to stand up again – even if his wobbly legs almost caused him to trip and fall right on Koushirou. How ironic that would have been…
“Woops… Is that why you jumped on my lap?”
“You’ll never let go of that, won’t you?”, the younger rolled his eyes, a faint blush still covering his cheeks, making Taichi laugh again.
“Nope, not a chance.” Playing into the teasy atmosphere, he nodded towards Koushirou. “So… Can I really have this? Like… Can I take it as some kind of… Proposal?”
“Did it come across to you as that?”, Koushirou replied, more hypothetically than anything, treading on a delicate path. Neither of them really seemed to know how to put it into words…
“Whatever you’ve intended to do with that chocolate, really.”
Tentomon was still flying between them exchanging looks – as if overstepping any kind of boundary would change the flow of time. Koushirou was then the first to break the silence, glance steadfast, forward. Determined.
“Let’s call it a trial token then, shall we.”
“A trial token? For what?”
“… For figuring out what exactly we are at this point.”
Suddenly, Taichi didn’t feel like an idiot anymore. With the bag in his hands radiating a warmth he had yearned for way too long.
Five favourite Taikou moments in Digimon without looking anything up, go.
Oooooooooh, THAT IS HARD THOUGH. I have at least, like... Ten or so, so if I just go from the top of my head... All media is allowed though, right?
Our War Game as a whole. And no, I'm not just saying that because the Taishirou-fied OWG version will forever live rent-free in my head. The whole movie is a small love letter to their overall dynamic - even if they didn't have the same writers, it shows how well they function together DESPITE the differences and friction. Koushirou running over to Taichi IMMEDIATELY once the world is at stake, indirectly forcing him to face his behaviour towards Sora, them making up after fighting, working together to prevent Tokyo from getting blown up... It's chef's kiss.
"Koushirou, I want you to choose." (Adventure) This might actually be the set-up for number 1, if you think about it. I still wish it had been as elaborate and sweet as the novel version ("No, dummy, I'm the one who will choose. But I can't ignore your intelligence in what could be our last moment."), but it's still a wonderful display of their mutual trust in each other. First you have Koushirou say "I've always believed in Taichi-san", then you have Taichi entrusting him to solve the card riddle, knowing that he is the best one to do so. Basically, as Taichi is ackowledged as the leader of the group, Koushirou is immediately acknowledged as the strategist - and the scene would only have been topped if THIS had been Koushirou's Crest activation episode.
"I felt like you finally opened up your heart to me." (Adventure novels) You may notice a pattern here, because this is basically the emotional follow-up to number 2. The anime version is obviously a lot more grim in the way they keep clashing with each other due to Taichi prioritizing Hikari's health while Koushirou prioritizes Taichi's, culminating in Taichi ordering Koushirou to protect Hikari while he is perfectly willing to sacrifice himself... Only for Koushirou to be completely fed up and scream "Why won't you ever let me fight too?!" The novel version actually answers it for him... Leaving him horrified at the idea of having shouted at Taichi, who in return, answers in such a soft and reassuring way ("It's okay. In fact, it made me happy.") and thus validates Koushirou's entire arc. "If reconciling with his parents helped him to open up to other people, it made Koushirou happier with himself too. Taichi accepting his brazenness with a smile deepened his adoration for him even more."
One braincell carsquad (02). 02!Taikou/Taishirou will always have a special place in my heart, because they just hit differently and while I wholeheartedly enjoy Koushirou scolding his husband (which, again, if you think about it, is the logical consequence of number 3), I also absolutely love how in sync they can be in humour and general wavelength. I maintain that they're the literal dads of the 02 kids, who wouldn't have gotten their digivices if it hadn't been for them - but nothing beats them giggling and joking around like absolute dorks at the back of a car, all comfortably and in peace.
The stageplay as a whole. I know, I know, I will never shut up about it, but it's just one of my favourite continuations of their bond. They're constantly seeking physical touch (Taichi slapped Koushirou's butt ffs), are basically co-leaders on the trip (and in terms of plot), there is basically an emotional follow up to number 3 with Koushirou questioning why Taichi cannot open up to him after all these years of having been by his side... And them reconciling is so subtle, sweet and delicate ("Are you sure you'll be alright on your own?" - "I'm not on my own.") that it makes my heart swell.
I have not written drabbles in a while and I needed a low stakes writing challenge for a change. So I decided to do a small drabble challenge together with some friends. I am not sure I will do the whole year but for now I am doing January with some Digimon Drabbles.
Murder of Crows
Digimon Adventure - Taichi/Koushiro
The ravens were sitting in the middle of the park, pecking at some fries that some kid had probably lost.
Koshiro could not help it, as his mind remembered one little thing. “Did you know in English they call a flock of ravens a ‘murder of crows’?”
Taichi raised an eyebrow. “I mean, they certainly look as if they would murder me if I tried to get one of those fries.”
“You would eat fries from the ground?” Koshiro could not help a little chuckle.
“Well, maybe not me,” Taichi said. “Agumon though.”
Koshiro grinned. “They definitely would murder him.”
A little follow-up interpretation post to the poll I set up the other day, since Koushirou came in second after Takeru. One may argue that, in comparison to Takeru (and his portrayal in the anime), Koushirou isn't exactly the easiest to read when it comes to answering the question above. There are some key scenes here and there - but I will also have to refer back to the novel, which provides important background exposition. So let's dive deeper into how the person who had grown "timid about interacting with other people" to "someone that everyone needed". (I will draw a bit from a previous analysis post of mine and I swear, it won't be too Taishirou-centric, but please bear with me.)
Koushirou starts the series, at first glance, as the classic computer nerd, who is mostly focusing on getting his laptop to work to solve the mysteries of the Digital World he is stuck in, together with six other kids. He doesn't exactly appear "insecure" about interacting with others, as he is seen running along with Taichi and Sora to jump into action; however, he tends to prefer a rather analytical, rational approach towards things - one that makes it harder to get along with the more emotional figures around him, such as Mimi. He doesn't seem to mind going off on his own to investigate - and, very early on, he muses over how exhausting it is to spend so much time "with everyone".
According to the novel, this isn't solely a sign of a potentially introverted nature, but may be related to "the moment when Koushirou found out the secret of his birth. […] He didn’t know who he belonged to. His very existence itself was uncertain. [...]"
"Before now, before he had come to the Digital World, Koushirou had considered himself an insignificant and worthless human being. He knew computers, but what use was that? Even he was aware that he stuck out like a sore thumb in class, and he had thought that even if he wasn’t around, the world would still go on. [...] He didn’t know how to approach his parents and naturally grew timid about interacting with other people."
It's not an exaggeration to claim that the adventures in the Digital World have changed every Chosen Child's life in one way or another. In Koushirou's case, his experiences may not just have affected his way of interacting with others, but even his outlook on life as a whole. And this is where we need to address three key factors that enabled his journey:
The spark: Taichi inviting him to Summer Camp (and his function as his partner in crime).
The fuel: His relationship with Tentomon.
The resolution: Him reconciling with his parents.
As implied in the novel quote above, Koushirou pretty much considered himself to be an outcast prior to Summer Camp; thus, he didn't just avoid talking to others willingly, but even chose a group-centric sport at school in order to avoid being focused on as an individual:
"In the days before he had left for camp, he normally avoided taking the initiative to talk to others in school. He didn’t like getting involved with them. Especially not when he didn’t even know who in the world he was. As a matter of course, his classmates rarely had a chance to talk with him. Many thought that he was hard to get along with, and Koushirou personally didn’t find that inconvenient so he did nothing to persuade them otherwise."
Until Taichi appears, possibly one of his first (human) friends ever:
"Taichi Yagami was one of the few exceptions. Because their school curriculum had a physical education requirement, Koushirou was forced to choose a club. It was a mere coincidence that he chose the soccer club. He wouldn’t have to face people one-on-one if he was in a club emphasizing teamwork rather than individual achievement, and the positions in soccer appeared more vague than they were in baseball. He felt that in the soccer club, he wouldn’t have to go out of his way to engage with other people.
Taichi was an upperclassman in that soccer club. It wasn’t that he was extremely talkative, but Taichi treated everyone without discrimination, as equals. That attitude of his didn’t change, even towards Koushiro.
If Taichi hadn’t invited him, Koushirou was sure that he would have never gone to Summer Camp."
So Taichi is the spark that made Koushirou join the group, thus getting him in the position to get sucked into the Digital World in the first place. Not only that, Taichi also turns out to be among those Koushirou talks to (and supports throughout the series) the most (again, this is mainly in the novel, whereas he doesn't seem uncomfortable talking among all the others at all). Most importantly, this is how he was able to meet Tentomon - who functions as his literal soulmate, mirroring his attitude in a more laid-back way, but also admires and encourages his natural curiosity and sense of exploration. Thus, he ends up doing what he enjoys the most: to decipher the riddles and mysteries around them - culminating in Taichi entrusting him to solve the infamous card riddle:
"“Koushirou.”
Hearing Taichi call his name in the moment that would decide their destinies gave Koushirou a little start. “W–What is it?”
“Can I ask what order you would put these cards?”
“O–Oh no… are you asking me to decide?” Koushirou said, tears emerging from the corners of his eyes.
But Taichi said, “No, dummy, I’m the one who will decide. It’s just that, ever since we got here, we’ve relied on your intelligence to get through a tough spot. I can’t ignore that in what could possibly be our last moment.”
And Taichi smiled.
All eyes turned to Koushirou. But instead of feeling anguished by their gaze, Koushirou instead felt encouragement. In each of their eyes, Koushirou could see that they all acknowledged him as the rightful tactician of their team.
[...]
Right now, right here, Koushirou was someone that everyone needed.
“Okay. I’ll do it.”
Koushirou changed his feelings of anxiety into confidence, a tentative willingness to believe in his own abilities.
[…]
Everyone clapped and cheered.
Koushirou looked embarrassed. “But I’m not sure if it’s right or not…” he said, suddenly hesitant.
But no one paid that any attention.
It was what Koushirou had decided.
It was what Taichi, who had depended on Koushirou to find the answer, had decided.
Even if it was the wrong answer, they were all together. That was better than being alone.
Their bright faces filled Koushirou to the brim with happiness.”
I would call this THE key moment leading up to him eventually being able to not deflect anymore when his parents confront him with the truth about his adoption. As the Chosen Children return to the real world, he initially tries very hard to hide Tentomon - and himself - from them, but with rising stakes and urgency, his own sense of protectiveness and love for his family shines through more and more.
Confessing that he used to hide behind his laptop and a mask of polite demeanour in order not to think, not to disrupt anything, to distract himself with everything BUT himself - just be told that he is fine exactly how he is and that, according to his adopted parents, he doesn't have to condemn his thirst for knowledge, that he is dearly loved and that nothing has to change.
And that moment, in turn, even further influences the way he acts around other people as well:
"But Taichi said, “Don’t worry about it. In fact, it made me happy to hear you speak so casually to me. I felt like you’d finally opened up your heart to me.”
Hearing this embarrassed Koushirou. But if reconciling with his parents had helped him to close his distance with other people, then it made Koushirou happy about himself as well. Taichi’s big-hearted way of accepting his brazenness with a smile only deepened Koushirou’s admiration for Taichi more than ever."
It's where the viewer can finally see how the adventures, his interactions with the others, his partner, his parents, have indeed shaped and influenced Koushirou's expression of personality. Whether it's running alongside Taichi, Sora and everyone else to jump into a fight; using his natural wits to be helpful, support and protect (finding Mimi in a labyrinth, finding Sora in a pyramid, finding medicine for Hikari, trying to get Taichi to take care of himself, etc.); butting heads with but getting inspired by Mimi's way of pushing forward - and, last but not least, being told that, slowly but steadily, he doesn't have to push himself to make his emotions come across. To be 100% casual. To say the silent part out loud. That, at some point, it'll all just come "naturally"...
... And connecting with others is, for the most part, a constant theme in his development for the rest of the series - one way or another. Because now that he has an idea of who he actually is, his focus shifts significantly. Let's summarize it, shall we:
In 02, he functions as the connector between both "the elders" and "the new kids", as a mentor (and literal mom friend); he makes sure that everyone is up to date, messages and coordinates, tries to prevent things from literally and figuratively blowing up, encourages, praises and teaches the new generation - and the list goes on and on. While the group still struggled to stay in touch during Our War Game, by the time of 02 - and especially Diablomon Strikes Back -, he is quite a pro in managing logistics and communications in the back. And knows he may have to scold his children even those older than himself if they don't comply.
He may still have troubles getting his feelings across in a casual way with everyone...
... but with the ongoing encouragement of Tentomon - and understanding of his friends -, he's doing what he can.
While he may also continue struggling to accept an emotionally-based approach instead of acting logically and rationally as an adolescent, his ongoing persistence - especially in the third Tri movie - gets the team back on track. This is important to keep in mind, considering how he had gotten into a fight with Mimi, wasn't able to consider Meiko's mental state and also couldn't even initially convince Taichi to join his efforts to "bring the Digimon back". And it makes sense for Koushirou to attempt every possible method to get Tentomon back - one of the first friends he ever had, his dearest partner, the one who thoroughly valued him from the beginning without a shred of doubt WHILE he still doubted himself.
Plus, let's not forget Koushirou's tendency to lock himself into his office all alone without taking care of his mental or physical health (and get an overdose of oolong tea). However, his friends do check in on him regularly, such as Sora, Jyou, Takeru and Mimi. There IS a sense of connection, even if he (still) isn't one to directly verbally communicate it - and probably never will be able to. However, at this point (just like Yamato did in the screenshot above), his friends, just like Taichi and Mimi, can read him and his intentions.
And in the end, it were his words that brought everyone else together in the end - indirectly. (I still maintain that he was his most communicative self in the stageplay, capable of encouraging everyone even more visibly, but that's the nature of a stageplay after all - being more talkative.)
To solidify his connector role once and for all, him having his own tech company to provide smartphones, software and other gadgets while taking care of the entire Chosen Children network by the time of Kizuna, at only age 21 - couldn't be more obvious. He may appear pretty business-like; but as a whole company CEO with employees under his belt, who keeps in touch with his peers as much as he possibly could despite all his adult responsibilities - he couldn't be farther away from the loner-type trope. Once again, he is the one who continues to call, text and message everyone throughout the entire movie to the point of sacrificing himself for the greater good - and was never even close to sharing the fate of losing his partner (again), as he had always treated Tentomon as a vital part of his every-day-life (friend, soulmate, Co-CEO, maid, you name it). Then, in The Beginning, he entrusts the administration of the Chosen Children network to his kouhai, Miyako, while he takes over PR work and other (more tedious) responsibilities. His career path as Digital World researcher/scientist even shows him continuously being in touch with the likes of Jyou's brother and Sora's father.
Soooo to sum it all up: The computer nerd kid that used to doubt his whereabouts and avoided talking to others over not even knowing who he himself even was, turned into quite a capable networker, supporter and, in a way, even a figure of leadership. Once encouraged to be himself, once learning about his origins, once entrusted and valued by people he can actually call his friends, he bloomed into a mentor figure, happy to teach others. One that may never openly and directly state how much all those bonds mean to him, how much he loves his parents, partner, friends - but he doesn't have to. They know and take him for who he is - even if they have to pull him out of his overworking tendencies, hyperfocus mode AND the four walls that are his office spaces every now and then. He may continue to have a hard time confiding in others emotionally (while having a talent in making them confide in HIM). But he's probably pretty aware of the fact that, committing his entire life to solving the mysteries of the Digital World isn't something he can do all by himself - which is why he will always keep the Chosen Children network, as well as his circle of friends, close. And not only in a chat window.
As pointed out in the main post, every single Chosen Child will get their individual analysis post to check on the status of the current popularity of their ships. We’re gonna take a look at Koushiro here - if you are interested in the results of 2023, feel free to check out the previous analysis.
With that out of the way, let’s get started!
The overall results / spreadsheet
Disclaimer: As the “Someone from Poll 1″ and “Someone from Poll 2″ option have been excluded from the final analysis due to redundancy reasons and all results were culminated in another “final count”, the results will not be 1:1 to what the polls look like:
Overall votes: 125 (approx. 85 after excluding votes for “Someone from Poll 1” and “Someone from Poll 2” from the complementary poll). The main poll received 72 votes, and the secondary poll received 53 votes.
The comments/tags did not provide a choice that wasn’t specifically mentioned in the polls themselves.
Ship Analysis
1st Place: With a lead of 37%, Taichi won the overall vote. Which, in terms of his role in the Adventure verse as Koushirou’s main point of contact throughout the entirety of the series, is not surprising overall. Koushiro is Taichi’s right-hand tech specialist and generally considered to be his best friend (besides Sora and Yamato), they share screentime and history together while solving problems and riddles to drive the plot forward, with a few emotional hick-ups in between, but a lot of mutual trust and loyalty to keep them focal points for one another. Breaking through the stereotypes of brawns/brains, extrovert/introvert or jock/nerd in several ways. Thanks to the various artists and writers, mostly in Japanese spheres (like Twitter), but also in English spheres, they are still one of the more viable ships out there. In comparison to the 2023 polls, the lead was less tremendous. Despite the fact that results were mostly the same, Taichi had won the poll back then with 55% compared to this year's 37%. So a exposure/follower bias still has to be considered since Koushiro is my favourite character and Taichi/Koushiro my favourite Digimon ship. While I am not intending to downplay their popularity in itself (despite the fandom being fairly quiet at the moment), the results may have looked different in other spheres of the internet.
2nd Place: The second spot goes, without a single shred of doubt, once again to Mimi (28%), as Koushiro/Mimi is considered to be one of the most popular Koushiro-centric ships world-wide. This is due to their set-up in the series as being odd-balls of the same age while simultaneously bouncing off of each other very well as one of the go-to “opposites attract” dynamics. Additionally, Tri canonically made Koushiro crush on Mimi, solidifying a consistent fanon-headcanon (which usually goes the other way round, with her having a crush on him instead). While the portrayal of the crush was not appreciated equally everywhere, they have always been going strong for valid reasons - and Mimi’s number of votes (24) was closer to Taichi’s (32) than in the 2023 polls (19 to 51). While she never surpassed him at any point in the voting, the gap was much smaller this time.
3rd Place: This has been a curious one - as Taichi and Mimi already took up most of the votes as being Koushiro’s most viable options, the race for the third spot had been, once again, a bit more variable throughout the voting. Interestingly enough, the option with the third most votes (11%) had been the "Ace/No ship" option, implying that the majority of voters don't see him compatible with either Taichi or Mimi - or tend to not ship him romantically at all. Which is not an unlikely choice, considering a common interpretation of the computer nerd/support character trope (with more interest in problem-solving than social mingling). On the other hand, he simply may not be considered to have much romantic chemistry with the rest of the cast. If we have to name a third human character he tends to be shipped with, Hikari (6%) would eventually win. While its popularity has dwindled a lot in recent years, Tumblr is actually one of the few internet spaces that considers Koushiro/Hikari as a somewhat valid choice besides the comparably huge shipping “giants” that took over 1st and 2nd place. As they did share subtle but gentle moments together throughout the Dark Master’s Arc in 01, the World Tour Arc in 02 and Tri, having both displayed a deep connection to the Digital World.
Niche Ships (“Honorary mentions”): Granted, there aren’t a lot of votes left to work with, but we shall take a look at the niche choices after all: That includes Menoa (5%), his unnamed friend from America (4%), Miyako (2%) and, last but not least, Sora (2%). With Menoa having major interactions with him in Kizuna, serving as some sort of genius rival, it makes sense to see her here - and even though we never get to actually see his friend from the US, he is still a constant he appears to have stayed in touch with over the years. Miyako certainly has an appeal as his "computer nerd Kouhai" - and Sora serves as a somewhat outlandish "let's ship the paralleled redheads" niche in recent years. The "Others" option also scored 4% in this section, even though no concrete characters have been mentioned here.
Rarepair Hell (“The 1 vote squad”): This one goes out to Meiko (1%) and the "OC" option.
No audience (“0 votes go to…”): The list was pretty large this time, consisting of: Yamato, Jou, Takeru, Daisuke, Ken, Iori and Willis. For comparison's sake, only Yamato and Meiko had received 0 votes back in 2023.
What did the other polls say?
Koushiro won Mimi’s poll (26%), came in second in Taichi’s (24%), thus only mirroring his own results to a certain degree. For comparison's sake: He had won Taichi's poll and had come second in Mimi's in 2023.
As for the majority of the other polls, he turned out to be a rather rare choice overall, which is in line with his own results: He got - surprisingly enough - 5% in Sora's poll, 4% in Hikari's, 3% in Yamato's and 2% in each Jou's and Takeru's. Daisuke and Iori got the honorary 1% vote each. While those numbers are still comparably low due to the small sample size, it's still notable that, back in 2023, Koushiro had gotten 7% in Iori's poll, 10% in Hikari (thus coming in third in her poll overall) and merely 1% in Sora's - showing that those niche choices are quite a fleeting moment.
Ken and Miyako were the only characters in whose polls he received 0 votes.
Notable additions / comments / thoughts
Similar to Sora’s poll, both the low sample size and the overall established fandom preferences were the main drivers in Koushiro’s polls. Despite a potential exposure bias towards Taichi/Koushiro, it was to be expected that Taichi and Mimi would receive most of the votes and dominate the polls overall, as they have historically been his most popular shipping choices for him due to their dynamics and interaction patterns - which is perfectly understandable, as Taichi is portrayed as one of the characters Koushiro interacts with the most throughout big chunks of the entire series, whereas Mimi is literally framed to be a love interest for him in Tri. The other options have all been very niche in (very low) numbers and considering the huge popularity of the first two choices, it seems logical that the rest may prefer not to ship him romantically at all. Koushiro being on the asexual spectrum is a rather popular headcanon based on his personality after all. Hikari may be generally considered viable in certain niche fandom corners due to their personalities and the few interactions they had - but that doesn't say much, considering how she only received f i v e votes overall.
The comments and the tags have only referred to the already mentioned choices - namely the Yagami siblings, which have been mentioned at length above. So the “Others” option did not reveal any other potentially preferred suitors.
