A Salon writer named Jon Hutson has levied some ridiculous allegations against me, accusing me of being many different people and having a wide assortment of phone numbers listed on WhitePages.com. I understand that paranoia drives people to believe weird things, but he makes verifiably false statements about my LinkedIn account and a Sumter-based phone number from which he allegedly received a text message.

Unlike most states, Maryland has a "citizen's complaint" system. If you're laughed out of the police precinct, you can find a district commissioner and convince them to file spurious charges. The position requires no qualifications, and it leads to situations like this where the elements of the crime aren't even alleged.

Is it possible to institute better protections for South Carolinians and other Americans from unhinged people in Maryland? Paying attorneys' fees and flying to a state I've never been because some random person received a text message from my area code is crazy.
