SPACEWRESTING! Post Frequency Update

Hey all!

I wanted to write a quick post to let everyone know what’s going on with the current SPACEWRESTLING! posts (or lack thereof).

My goal this year was to come out with an update every fortnight without fail for 12 months and then gauge the project from thereon. Unfortunately, after I made this decision, I was hired full time (which I wasn’t expecting, as I’ve been a freelance contractor for the majority of my professional career) and with that, as well as commissions, and then doing SPACEWRESTLING! on top of it all- the stress really begun to catch up on me and I’ve realised it’s been affecting my mental health negatively and interfering with my performance at work.

SPACEWRESTLING! isn’t going away, but I think I will have more motivation and drive to bring out sporadic updates, without the added pressure of sticking to a deadline. The new plan is to finish this portion of the story and then release a physical copy which can be purchased (possibly through a Kickstarter, depending on the cost of printing).

I’m sorry to the big fans of the story who have really enjoyed the regular updates so far. Also don’t be afraid to write in your reactions and opinions on what you’d like to see next. That goes a long way to motivating me and help shape the story into something great and memorable.

What was the deciding factor that made you go "I am going to write Spacewrestling"?

GOOD QUESTION.

I picked up roleplay again at the end of 2013 to what I would consider full time because I was incredibly active on the daily. It was my boyfriend who asked at what point does improving ones writing from roleplay end and it stagnating into a non-tangible hobby begin? Because I couldn’t really show anyone my roleplay and have them understand how much I had improved. I can’t make money of roleplay. I can’t put roleplay into my portfolio.

The original idea of @spacewrestling! was a challenge to myself if I could tell an interesting story in 50 pages of a webcomic. I chose wrestling because that’s the majority of my audience if I’m posting on tumblr and was very ingrained in the community at that point.

The thought of doing a webcomic was quite daunting for me because I’ve never really learned how to tell a story in that medium. But I can write a story. A friend showed me @starlingstory and I thought the way they presented their story was really interesting and something I could achieve on a consistent basis. That’s when I really got motivated and excited for spacewrestling! I already had a lot of characters and worldbuilding conceptualised at that point so it was an easy transition.

I got hired full time two weeks after I announced spacewrestling! so I had to cut the planned weekly updates down to fortnightly- which is all I can physically and mentally handle right now. I think it will take about a year start to finish for the story I originally wanted to tell for the 50 page webcomic. At that point I’ll evaluate the success, if it’s feasible for me to continue with it and if it’s something I should focus on more seriously.
