You know you're kind of supposed to parse out for yourself that holden is outwardly just some awkward miserable and polite child. Like all that "annoying" talk about his cynical worldview isnt visible, you got that right? Outwardly he writes essays for his roommate on a typewriter that isnt his because he lent his out and he's nauseous at the thought of this dudebro chad hurting his friend and he tells his sister to not ruin her life running after him and hates that people graffitied the word fuck in her school and is frightened by sex [tied to his heavily implied experience with CSA] and misses his dead brother and is soul crushingly lonely. Like if you couldnt see that difference that is your own shortcoming not your english teacher's and most certainly not J.D Salinger's.
