✦      IT'S MY HOME, SAYS THE CHILD.  teddy's curious glance calcifies into disbelief, but only momentarily.  i've spent a long time here, among the trees.  

if the boy were a spectre of some sort, he would have sensed it — he had an aptitude for the handling the dead, a skill he couldn't quite account for but relied on heavily when his party seemed to pass nothing but massacres and corpses that needed speaking to — but so far, nothing had manifested.  his wards had not been tripped, his magic reacted to nothing . . . the boy was simply, a boy.  

abandoned?  victim of a cruel twist of fate?  perhaps he was running away from his parents?  every question withered away on teddy's lips before he could strategise how best to ask them.  tact would never be in his favour, and nor would threats; he needed this boy sound of mind and willing to work with him.  

“theodore,”  he offers in return, noting just how fragile the little hand felt in his.  “what do you mean — it speaks to you?”  the woods?  was he a druid, perhaps?  “speaks to you how?”

it was something of a comfort to finally have a name for this face before him. of course, this man could be lying to him, but the thought doesn’t really occur to him in the moment. he had his guide through the city, and would uphold his end of their deal to ensure it was a fair one. besides, unless they ran into any trouble ( thieves and monsters alike) this would be a pretty smooth trip through the forest.

and with this theodore for company, he’s confident they can handle whatever rogues and creatures they may encounter. it was always easier to handle things when he wasn’t alone. and theodore seemed like the sort who could make quick work of a threat; perhaps he could learn a thing or two from him about survival of a different kind.

“they just… do,” he replies with a small shrug, “it comes naturally. like instinct. i can sense what they want, and they listen to me too. the trees, the animals, all of it.”

in all honesty, the child hadn’t given it much thought before, couldn’t recall the first time he reached out and nature reached back. it simply always had.

she dips into a curtsy, hands clasped in front of her and a polite smile upon her lips. it wasn’t often she encountered any type of kindred spirit, but the cold seemed to cling to them both in a way that felt familiar.

“it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“well yeah,” comes the nonchalant response, fingers picking at the hem of his gloves, “can’t think of what else a guy like me would be doin’.”

that’s a lie; there are many things someone like him could be doing, both good and bad, and he knew it. but this was the only direction he could ever see for himself once his powers had stabilized (for the most part) and he was able to actually see any type of future at all. it felt natural, stepping into his parents footsteps in this way, using his powers to help people and show the world that mutants could be just as useful as any avenger. there was always the chance he could go rogue and swing more towards the morally grey— rebel and do whatever the hell he wanted because he could.

though maybe dipping a toe into that vigilante life, mixing with the shadier sides of the world and mutant kind, would still be following in his parents footsteps in a way. not that he could see either of them being too pleased if he ended up making the same mistakes they did— they just wouldn’t necessarily be able to have the footing to judge him for it.

however, that would require shedding all his responsibilities and he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he let any of those kids down. there was still a small, stubborn part of him that wanted to be remembered as a hero someday that outweighed any temptation to travel any other path.

glancing up from his hands, blue eyes fix on teddy, curious as he studies the other for a moment.

“why? you lookin’ to try it out for yourself?”

eyes study the monitors and readings before him, brow pinched with concentration and thumbs hooked on his belt. the feel of the shield strapped across his back is familiar and grounding.

he has to admit, despite having experience with gods, aliens, vampires, and even the occasional bit of space and time travel, situations like this still cause him to pause. how had he of all people landed in this situation, and be expected to adapt and solve it? any younger version of himself had no idea what was in store.

but at least this time he wasn’t handling it alone; there were others prepared to deal with scenarios such as this one, perfectly capable and probably more clued in than he was.

“alright,” he turns to address her, all business, “what’s your read on the situation?”

the gesture is unexpected, and maybe it’s that which warms her more than the fabric does, even as she hesitantly curls her fingers around the edges to pull it tighter around her shoulders. kindness like this seems to be a rarity these days, in these parts, so every encounter with it is something precious.

it’s odd to be grateful for something such as a tadpole being lodged into her brain without consent, but if it is the sole reason their paths crossed, she can’t help it. even ozzie, who had initially been skeptical of teddy ( can the creature smell something on him that she couldn’t? ), had warmed up to him with time. it wasn’t uncommon for the small dog to trail after him when they set up camp, or curl up beside him while sat by the fire as she was now. these days she trusts ozzie’s instincts as well as her own, if not more so, uncertain of how much influence their little parasite had over her mind. so if ozzie thought teddy was safe then that was one matter settled.

she’s not sure where this adventure will take them, how long they’ll manage continuing on this way. but she’d be lying if she said she wouldn’t be disappointed if they went their separate ways after it was all said and done.

too aware of the warmth in her cheeks and the sudden pressure behind her eyes, she offers a grateful smile up to him.

“thank you,” her voice almost sounds shy to her own ears, “it’s colder out here than i anticipated.”

backbiter is twirled with a flourish, bored smile on his lips. it wasn’t often he had the chance to go toe to toe with someone in combat like this these days, and he always welcomed a challenge. he hadn’t garnered the reputation of a skilled swordsman out of sheer luck, after all. but he couldn’t let jason know he considered him that much of a challenge, child of one of the big three or not. luke was confident he could hold his own, regardless.

“i don’t really care if it does or not, honestly,” he replies, settling into another fighting stance, “you ready?”

“that’s a good mindset to have,” he acknowledges with a small smile and a nod, “it’s nice to think about the potential, instead of all the ways things could go wrong or, y’know, how doomed we might seem to be sometimes. good to have some hope for a better future.”

it’s easy to slip into the often-trodden spiral of despair over the state of things sometimes. jumping through time and space could prove to be a fine distraction a lot of the time, sure, but sometimes it slapped him in the face with reality when he saw planets making the same mistakes earth has and knowing sometimes it was too late to stop what was already in motion. he hated that, that feeling of hopelessness, of not being able to do anything about a problem. he was made to help people, to care, to patch things up. it went against his nature to stand by uselessly of someone was hurting.

but what could one person do in the face of world wide problems? well, from experience, probably a lot. in their adventures, sometimes all it took was one person to change course or stand up and speak out, to make a change. they weren’t out of hope or time yet. and with people like her in a position to forge ahead and make the right calls, he doesn’t doubt that they’d be okay.

“we’re lucky to have you looking out for us like that.”

he contemplates the board, bored as marvin takes his sweet time considering his next move. it’s not that he hates chess— but there were so many other games they could be playing instead. or, screw games, more fun things they could be doing instead. chin propped up by his hand, whizzer lifts an eyebrow at his partner.

“y’know,” he drawls, sarcasm heavy on his tongue, “i’ve heard good things about checkers. why don’t we give that a shot for once?”

his first thought is that he hopes he doesn’t look too confused, when the gift is deposited into his hands; while he’s not unused to receiving small presents from the trees and animals of the woods on occasion, receiving something from another person is an altogether foreign experience. gods know his parents never saw a reason to provide him with anything but scraps.

blinking down at the knife, he wonders if he’s been handed this to use, if there’s an unspoken expectation that he’s being given this knife to do something in particular with it, and then return it to teddy again. most of what he gets from the creatures and flora are things he needs to survive: berries, edible leaves, kindling for a fire on a cold night. they are self-explanatory, used immediately. was this also meant to be used for survival?

glancing between the knife, up to teddy, and then back down again, still not being given any instructions, he concludes it must simply be a gift.

“this is for me?”

as unceremoniously as the knife had been handed over, ben found himself deeply touched by the fact that someone had thought about him enough to want to give him anything. so he turns it in his hands, examining the blade and the hilt with wonder.

“it’s beautiful,” the words come softly but steeped with gratitude, as he peers up at teddy, “i’m sorry i don’t have anything for you in return.”

there’s a  sheepish pause.

“actually—“ he rummages around in a bag at his belt for a moment, before pulling a pouch containing seedling out, and offering it up.

“here. it’s mint. the pouch has been charmed to keep it alive without constant water or sunlight. hopefully it’s…okay. and, uh, a fair trade?”
