Consumption disease:
Consumption is also known as phthisis and tuberculosis. It is a disease caused by bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that attacks the lungs, a scourge throughout known history in the turn of the 20th century, the leading cause of countless deaths in the United States.
History:
It can be easily referred as the most feared ailment in the world, the disease in old times was known as the "Great White Plague" (because it caused extreme paleness to the ones that were affected), effecting everyone like young and old, the rich and the poor without discrimination. It almost seemed like no one was safe from consumption disease.
A doctor from the National Association for Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis named Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau founded the prevention of consumption. This association was then named as American Lung association. They were the first ones to combine the efforts of physicians and parishioners to fight against death and this scourge.
Tuberculosis (TB) or consumption disease is a multisystemic ailment with several manifestations. It can be called the most common cause of mortality caused by infections worldwide. Although consumption disease rates are gradually decreasing in the United States, the disease is still more common in many developing parts of the world and the third world countries. Drug-resistant TB is increasing worldwide due to the increasing resistance of bacteria in the modern world.
