Dracula: 2004 - An Audio Drama

Dracula: 2004 is a modern(ish) adaptation of Dracula by Bram Stoker, set in the early 2000s. It is written and directed by Francesca Mylod-Ford (The Pilgrimage Saga and H.G. Wells Has His Regrets) and produced by Maddy Searle @maddyisabstract (The Prickwillow Papers, The Magnus Archives, Big Finish: Torchwood).

The show consists of 38 episodes split into three parts. Each episode is approximately 20 minutes long, and is recorded in a found-footage format. Since this is, after all, a horror story, content warnings are provided at the start of each episode, and in the show notes.

What's the pitch?

The year is 2004. Flip-phones are in vogue, MySpace has just been launched, and Britney Spears’ Toxic is top of the charts. And Castle Dracula is about to receive a young guest for dinner…

A found-footage extravaganza, Dracula: 2004 dares to ask what happens when you combine vampires and dial-up internet. Join Jonathan as he survives the work trip from hell; gossip with Mina and Lucy over Lucy’s three suitors; and meet the eccentric Van Helsing and her vampire-hunting armoury. This is a new millennium, a new age of technology, and a version of Dracula that you have never experienced before.

The Holmwood Foundation is a Found Footage Horror-Fiction Podcast created by Fio Trethewey (Big Finish: Gallifrey War Room, 18th Wall Productions) and Georgia Cook (Big Finish: The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles, Gallifrey War Room, BBC Books, The Dracula Daily Sketch Collection). It is a modern day sequel to the gothic novel Dracula.

Our story follows Jeremy Larkin (Sean Carlsen) and Maddie Townsend (Rebecca Root), two co-workers at the mysterious Holmwood Foundation, as they are possessed by the ghosts of Jonathan and Mina Harker, and embark on a road trip across the country in an effort to achieve their ghost's wishes: to stop Dracula once and for all. This is a story about identity and self discovery, family loyalty and devotion, all wrapped around a nightmare of a road trip with a rejuvenating severed head, incredibly sincere Victorian ghosts, and an analogue recorder.

Exciting news (x2!)

Part one: We are thrilled to announce that Dracula: 2004 is officially a winner for Colorado Webfest 2026, for Best Theme Song (Audio Fiction)! We are particularly happy for our wonderful composer, Joash Kari, who wrote and performed the theme song himself (inspired, of course, by Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Part two: Our second piece of exciting news is that we have a release date for Episode 26! Eps 26 and 27 were unfortunately delayed due to recording issues, but everything is once again in place, and we are go for the final two episode of Part Two: Veins.

Chapter Twenty-Six: Left Outside Alone of Dracula: 2004 will release this Saturday on the 20th June, and normal scheduling will resume from there. Don't forget to tune in!

i do appreciate how tumblr LOVES podcasts that aren't what most people think of when they think "podcast." you people love strange and terrible things happening to queer & confused characters, and i respect that

that being said we need a broad-scale revival of the golden age of radio (but this time without the Hays Code). before everyone had a television, radio dramas were THE premium form of at-home entertainment. there were so many to choose from: comedies, mysteries, crime, sitcoms, soap operas, you name it.

I am SO glad the public is rediscovering the joys of listening to audio plays, and damn well hope we can get some more variety. currently BBC Radio is doing amazing things with audio dramas (but the availability on their website is...not great. some shows pop up on archive.org before getting taken down for copyright, so pirate it when possible).

If you like horror podcasts, I recommend two canadian radio shows from the 1980s: Nightfall and Vanishing Point, both free online (and with amazing production value). also BBC's Fear On Four, some episodes of which are currently on archive.org (so download em while you can!)

I would argue that we’re in a golden age of audiodramas right now. There are so many new shows being made of every genre imaginable, almost entirely by indie creators. The low barrier to entry and lack of effective monetization means that it’s probably the single media type least controlled by capitalism.

I would be remiss to not mention that this also means that the queer rep is better in audiodrama than any other medium. As someone who is ace, I can name a couple ace characters in all other media, I could name 10 canonically ace audiodrama characters off the top of my head.
