I started reading Game of Thrones to cope with the long wait before the next season. Not only are some characters pretty different from the show, there are some minor things that bother me much more than it should, such as Daenerys’ dark eyebrows and eye color. Even though I wouldn’t want to see a thirteen year old Dany on the show, I decided to draw her more accurate to the book. the thing is: pleasure can be violence. it can be a technique of violence. it can be the point of violence. this is why the arguments about ellen’s sexual hunger being the thing that “draws” her toward orlok and this must be respected as a sign of agential desire are making me so queasy. she is pleasured by him. as a child. pleasure is forced on her. a pleasure she can’t understand because it’s happening to her too young, because she only wanted affection and “tenderness” and this is the gateway of connection which a predator takes advantage to make sexual use of her, as driven home by the fact she goes into trance states, her body twisting and turning under the immense power of a physical excitation she does not have the capacity to choose or escape. the scenes of “possession” in the film are so affecting because they dramatize this pleasure that enters and moves you against your will until it churns back around to agony. a puppet to pleasure, puppeted by pleasure. limbs manipulated until they are inanimate yet dancing and leaping. pleasure is the violence. experiencing this physical excitation against your will as a physiological process the mind is helpless against is absolutely excruciating. to be blunt, yes, rape can make you come, and it’s not less rape. the idea it is being read as unmarked consensual desire is making me pretty ill.
