you know I do not think anyone ever figured out what the big secret was in the map in Thick as Thieves but the thing that captivates me most is the fact that apparently, in the frame narrative the map lets us in on, Gen is apparently known mostly as the Queen’s Thief and NOT Attolis or Annux.

or maybe he’s known mostly as the Queen’s Thief not because his thievery is what gets him into legend more than his kingship, but because the kingdom(s) of the little peninsula are conquered or fall apart into ruin! so being the Thief is all he has, since he’s no longer a king.
