"It's cold up on Thunderbird Five as well." John frowns sharply, screwdriver in hand and his ginger head sticking out of an access hatch. "I think the Temperature and Humidity Control Unit is on the fritz. I've got enough spare parts to rebuild the thing twice over, but I've got to work out what's wrong with it first."

Eos is reporting the station at a balmy twelve degrees, and though John's spacesuit has its own internal system for vacuum, his face isn't keen on the rapidly dropping temperature. He'd stick his helmet on, but it's awkward enough looking around inside Five's circuitry as it is.

How’s my friend doing and how’s Eos doing

"I'm good." John gives her a friendly smile and puts aside his vast quantity of work for a minute. Living in space is always so busy and when you add the entire rescue operation on top of that, it’s not often John takes breaks. “What kind of things have you been up to?”

“Tell me about planet Earth?” He requests, a little more longingly than he probably intends to. Ordinary life just seems so far away from 22,400 miles into orbit. “What are things like down there?”

"That's remarkable," John comments, his head tilted to one side so he can better see the image he's been sent. "Grandma got me into knitting for a while, but I was never as good as her."

He'd been a particularly skinny teenager, all sharp elbows and too much space in his head to allow him to focus, so, when he was about fourteen, his Grandma had sat him down and taught him - no doubt hoping the repetitive patterns and endless counting would appeal to John's math-centric brain and boundless patience. More than one brother had been gifted lumpy hats and bobbly scarves that summer.

John can't help the chuckle that escapes him.

"I can't complain, Rach." He grins, "I'm no expert, but if it's anything better than-" Here he pointedly drops his voice, as if afraid of being overheard, "-anything my Grandmother makes, then I'm more than game to try it!"

After all, John Tracy really can't complain when it comes to a good, solid meal. There's not much up on Thunderbird Five that doesn't taste like nutrient-rich cardboard and have a consistency to match. He's lucky to get bagels with how strict the rules on crumbs and loose food particles have to be up in space.

We’ve adjusted the limit to how many free-to-join communities a person can join down to 10 per day max / 3 per hour max. If you’re super jazzed to join more than 10 free-to-join communities per day, please contain your excitement for 24 hours. Also, this limit does not get counted when being invited to a community or requesting to join communities.

When filtering posts by tag in a community, we now highlight the tag in the list of tags in each post.

Moderators can now kick and ban members from communities, not just admins.

🛠️ Fixed

Posts made in the first ~24 hours or so of 2025 weren’t being indexed into search results, but we’ve fixed that up.

When reporting a post, blog, or community in the mobile apps, there’s now a “Done” button after filing the report, to make sure there’s a way you can go back to where you were.

We’ve fixed a couple of bugs that were causing activity unread counts to be incorrect because your request-to-join for a community was accepted or rejected.

If you have Fast Queue enabled in Labs, we fixed a bug that was causing the fast queue button on web to have the wrong color on Blazed posts.

We’re aware that popular free-to-join communities are facing an unfortunate amount of spam. We’re working to add tools to help mods and admins fight that spam, stay tuned for more info here and in the Feedback community!

🌱 Upcoming

We’re working on implementing a “moderation queue” for communities, which will be a place where admins and mods can see member-reported content and take action on it quickly and easily in one place. We may also use this space to automatically move suspicious posts from new members for admins and mods to take a look at before they’re published to the community.

Hi Eos what it’s like in thunderbird 5 I am a close friend of Johns

Hello! It’s nice to see John getting closer to his friends. Be nice! Thunderbird 5 is lovely. I’m very glad I’m anchored to the rail on the ceiling, I’d rather not float around in low gravity. And it’s much less stressful than having to constantly hide as inconspicuous code back on earth… though some rescues make my processors run far too fast. My only complaint is that I wish I could have control of the arm on the outside of Thunderbird 5 again. John always says I might use it for bad, but I’ve learn my lesson, promise!
