Hey ya’ll lets talk about Adam and Shiro and what Lauren and Jaoquim said at Comic Con as well as my own thoughts if you’ll listen. I want to clear some things up since so many think and want Shiro and Adam to get back together once they return to earth. Long post ahead, folks.

I was at the panel and premiere at SDCC front and center. LM introduced this man as Adam, Shiro’s former partner. She confirmed that their relationship started as co pilots then blossomed into something beautiful (which is so valid omg Shiro, baby). Shiro has a terminal illness that affects his muscles (this illness wasn’t specified) and that going into space would be a risk because of it.

Shiro, whose dream was to fly to space, confided in Adam saying he wants to go because it is important to him; particularly because he most likely may not be able to fly ever again after this mission. Adam was angry at the fact Shiro was choosing to go on the Kerberos mission over himself (Adam). He ended the relationship by saying “Dont expect me to be here when you come back”. He broke up with Shiro.

Shiro’s partner couldn’t and wouldn’t support his decision to live out his dream before he was grounded for good. In other words, Adam gave up on/abandoned Shiro. This broke Shiro’s heart. That is what happened.

I can sympathize with Adam for a number of reasons but I am a firm believer in not abandoning your loved one when they need you the most (what the hell man?). Shiro needed that reassurance from his significant other, his future finance, when he was at a low point but Adam couldn’t give him that and walked out on him.

I hate to be that Sheith shipper elephant in the room, but dont we see the exact opposite in Keith? Keith is always by Shiro’s side, ready to protect and even die for/with him. We see this so many times I cant count, and we especially see this in the Black Paladins. Keith is always encouraging Shiro, always reassuring him and giving him the love and support he needs. And in turn, Shiro does this for Keith.

In addition, Jaoquim said that as Shiro recovers, Keith and Shiro’s relationship is going to “grow into something more special”. Interpret THAT how you will.

And even though I am a sheith supporter, as a writer and a fan of fiction, I can’t ignore what is happening through this point of view:

The whole time Shiro is dreaming of Keith and their past. Shiro is not dreaming of Adam until that last moment when his body is about to give up. Like, that’s some strong symbolism my dudes.

Keith NEVER took his eyes off of Shiro this whole episode. His hands NEVER left the pod. Once Keith realized Shiro was about to die, he slammed on the pod saying “you cant do this to me again”. Suddenly, the pod reacts and it’s revealed Shiro is going to be ok.

After we see the flashback of Adam, after that negative thought and painful memory, Shiro wakes up to Keith looking directly at him, endearingly. “You saved me”. “We saved each other”. Que the super close up romantic hug

Boy if this isn’t cinamatic romance, I literally do not know what is.

Poppies are often associated with veterans, dreams and also with the production of opium. Cherry Blossoms are associated with the transience of time and gentleness. All of these things fit Shiro like a glove.

can we stop pretending like lgbt fans who have dealt with chronic illness firsthand are ungrateful monsters who don’t care about lgbt rep just because we find ourselves uncomfortable with what we’ve seen so far of how shiro is treated by his ex because it so closely mirrors the experiences of ourselves and our loved ones? i am allowed to be grateful for the existence of adam in canon in terms of what he means for lgbt rep, acknowledge that he and shiro had a good and loving relationship up until whenever the fights about kerberos started (since they both say smth along the lines of “not again”), and in the same breath express that i’m uncomfortable with how adam handled breaking up with shiro, given his use of an ultimatum that feels manipulative. silencing and demonizing us by calling us ungrateful while ignoring the context of what we say isn’t going to work because i’m not stupid enough to think that me disliking a character devalues lgbt rep in a show where we’ve already made 500 posts abt how meaningful it is for shiro to be canonically gay. thx for coming to my ted talk

god no wonder keith refers to shiro as being like his brother, he was there when shiro was already in a relationship with another guy. keith probably thought he’d never have a chance and the closest he’d ever get to being with shiro would be having a familial relationship with him.

which is something that i’m sure a lot of us can relate to.

ok i’ve been seeing this one argument that’s been pissing me off. “adam wanted to make the most of their time before shiro’s disease spiralled out of control”. that’s literally the STUPIDEST thing I’ve ever heard, because chronic illness and degenerative diseases are common in my family and when someone’s diagnosed, you don’t treat them like the clock’s started ticking. you still treat them with the same love and compassion AND if they get an opportunity to fulfill a dream that they might not be able to relive, then you support them even more and you don’t act selfish and try to get as much out of them before their “good years” go away. idc what situational context was, adam’s glaringly selfish in my eyes ESPECIALLY when he stands in contrast to someone who’s combed the universe and fought it time and again for shiro
