watching suits season 3 for the first time and how tf is rachel the exactly stereotype of annoying girlfriend who gets in the way of an yaoi ship on AO3 cliche fics you would think this was written by a naruto fujo fan who perceives sakura this way except this time she is like That™

i knowww... it's so frustrating. she reminds me of way back in the day when self-inserts were (mainly) just for fujo fans to write themselves having these grand romances with their (usually very ooc) favorite characters. (is that still what self-inserts are for? i don't know, i turn the other direction whenever i see them.)

as i'm trying to work this out, the only way i can think of that it really makes sense is that mike and rachel were meant to be a couple from day 1 (which is obvious anyway), but mike and harvey became too codependent too fast, and the writers forgot to develop mike and rachel's romance until too late; kind of like when you're trying to write a story and it gets away from you, and you have to change the plot you were originally planning on. mike and harvey "breached containment," you might say, and rachel...didn't deviate at all from her original outline, so by the time they hooked up, they didn't fit anymore because mike had already been reshaped to fit with harvey and the writers aren't clever enough to adapt to their changing circumstances.

not that the characters literally have lives of their own, but. well, we know korsh is somewhat reactive to fandom perception, or at the very least, he's aware of it; he's always seemed genuinely surprised and somewhat disbelieving that people imagine mike and harvey hooking up and/or falling in love. i think he's got a quite heteronormative mindset that way (and the degree to which he based harvey and to some extent mike on himself surely didn't help), so he never really thought rachel (or donna) needed to be developed much beyond "girl character who is a girl," once the romance got underway, because that's just the role they're fulfilling. that's essentially what they're there for.

meanwhile we got misters mike "y/n" ross and harvey "ceo" specter over here throwing themselves headfirst into every romance trope in the book 🙃
