SARAH
❝ Alfred… ❞
Her voice was barely even a whisper as she spoke. It truly pained her to see him like this, the charming young man who had been so lovely and kind and everything that she had hoped for, for such a long time! Sarah still remembered seeing him for the very first time, when she had been convinced that she would fall in love with him, and that only Alfred would be able to make her happy. She had later found out that this was not the case, and yet ──
──── and yet, Alfred was still incredibly sweet. And yet, all she wanted to do was hold him close. Drown in his eyes and let him know that everything would be alright if they just stayed with one another. It wasn’t love, Sarah was aware of that, even though she didn’t really know what love even was. But she needed him, for the very simple reason that he had showed her a kindness that she had never known, and to her, kindness was addicting. She wanted and needed him around for the very simple reason that he treated her with love and respect.
And who knew, maybe she could fall in love with him one day.
❝ Alfred, I don’t need protection, ❞she replied. Slowly, she brought her right hand up to his cheek and wiped away his tears, even though there was no point in doing so. Alfred was still crying, and every tear that she wiped away came back immediately. But Sarah did not stop. Alfred’s skin was soft under her fingers, and she still remembered how beautifully rosy his cheeks had been only hours ago, before she had literally sucked his life out of him. But no, this did not matter right now.
❝ The reason you couldn’t protect me was that I didn’t want you to protect me. I don’t ── Alfred, none of this is your fault. You were wonderful, and you did more for me than I deserved. ❞No one needed to tell her that she didn’t deserve Alfred and his kindness and love. If Sarah was a better person, she’d push him away and force him to get over her, to leave her behind instead of hurting himself. But she was selfish, and so all she did was raise her second hand as well, now cupping both of his cheeks with her small hands as she looked up to him. She needed him to stay with her; but not out of guilt.
❝ Please, do not protect me. Do not make yourself carry a weight that is entirely useless. Let me lift it from your shoulders by asking you to stay with me; not as someone who protects me, but as the kind and caring man that you are. That is what I need. ❞
Alfred knew that Sarah didn’t mean it that way. He knew that she only wished to comfort him. He knew that her words were sincere. After all, Sarah was an angel who had been dragged down into hell. How could she mean anythingbut the best? But a part of him, a loud, terrible part of him was horribly annoyed by her harsh, if truthful, words. He was grateful that she trusted him enough to allow him to hear the truth, but a part of him almost wished that she would have filled his ears with sweet lies.
He needed a purpose, albeit perhaps a fruitless one, but nevertheless, a reason to go on living. Alfred had never even dreamed that he would be so cursed, so thoroughly corrupted in this way. Even now, he clung to whatever was left of him with all his strength. He KNEW that just a few hours ago that these passions, these urgings, this lust which simmered beneath his skin, threatening to burstfree, had not been so vibrant nor so tangible. He KNEW that there had not been a terrible, wild part of his soul which begged him to set it free and relinquish control. He NEEDED stability in this life without limits, heneeded direction, he needed… He needed…
He needed Sarah to need him as desperately as he needed her.
More than a friend, if not quite a lover. He could not define what it was that he needed from her, butit was not this. Not a simple companion. Alfred needed Sarah to be his beacon of light in this endless night, for she was his last link to what he had been and without her, he did not know what he might be.
As much as Sarah might have intended to set Alfred free, he wanted nothing more to rip the burden back from her small hands and carry it for all eternity.
❝ Sarah, I’m not that man anymore.❞ The words came out far harsher than he ever could have intended them to. Or perhaps? Perhaps the truth of his words was as sincere as Sarah’s had been.
❝ I’m not even sure I’m a man anymore. Look! ❞
He sharply gestured to the corpse before them, and he could not hold a sob back from his lips. Sharply, he reached his arm up to drag the fresh tears away from his eyes.
❝ A man wouldn’t have done this! ❞
SARAH
Having her fangs buried in Alfred’s neck was the best feeling in the world.
As horrible as Sarah might have felt earlier at thesimple idea of biting the young man who had wanted to save herlife, she could now not deny anymore that his hot blood was exactly what she had needed. She could feel how weak he was getting, andeven the knowledge that she was the one sucking the life out of himcouldn’t stop her from taking more and more, drinking until therewas no blood left inside of him. It wasn’t enough, she knew thatwhile at the same time having no idea how she could possibly know that, but what did that matter? All that mattered was thatAlfred woke up again later, the innocence that she usually saw in hiseyes entirely gone. All that mattered was that she saw his fangs andthat they ran away, together, as they had dreamed of just afew days ago.
Alfred’s blood hadn’t been enough for her as a newly turned vampire, and yet ── when they came across a woman, Sarah forced herself to stay away from her to let Alfred drink; heneeded it so much more than she did. She couldn’t help but watchhim with a certain fascination as he sucked the woman dry, realising only now that she had done the same ── and that thevery same had happened to HER only a few hours earlier.
She noticed the change in Alfred the moment ithappened; the second when the realisation of what had happened hithim was when Sarah noticed what she had done as well. SHE had never minded being turned, she had been aware of the riskfrom the beginning on, and she had been WILLING to let Krolock bite her. But Alfred? Sweet and gentle Alfred, who had come all the way from Königsberg just to fight vampires? He had neverwanted this, had never chosen this path.
Sarah was next to him within a second, rushing therein order to gently place her hands on his shoulders, looking up at him with a pained expression in her eyes as he spoke. He was hurting, and it was her fault.
❝ Because I’m selfish, ❞ she replied and took another step towards Alfred. Her own body was now pressed against this, no inch between the two of them, and she truly hoped that hewould not push her away, even though she certainly deserved it. Sarah could handle a lot, she knew that, but being hated by Alfred was not one of these things.
❝ I didn’t want to bite you, I promise you that. You experienced it yourself, the hunger is ── it is impossible to resist. But I couldn’t let you die. I couldn’t risk being without you, Alfred. ❞
Alfred made no move to respond or reply to Sarah in any regard. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the gruesome sight lying on the ground before him. He was responsible for this. He had just willfully ended another’s life. Even the sweetness of Sarah’s words and her arms around him could not calm his horror, Sarah’s only just enough to keep him from collapsing to the ground himself and weeping in grief for the one whose life he had taken and for the life he had lost as it was.
In life( how it pained him to think of it like that), Alfred might have wept for an entirely different reason. He would have wept in joy and at the thought of Sarah needing him, of wanting him near her. But he could not even hope to focus on this singular joyful feeling. Alfred felt all and yet he felt nothing.
❝Sarah, I would have given my life for you, I was ready to die, I just ──❞
Alfred’s voice cracked and he forced himself to take a deep, shaking breath.
❝ I didn’t think it would have been like this.❞
Sarah, she - Alfred could only too easily imagine WHY she would flee into the arms of the creature who whispered such sweet words. The screams he had heard coming from her bedroom door yesterday were far more than enough to guess at that. ( Yet more suffering that he had let Sarah endure. ) And Alfred himself had been tempted by the dark whispers in his mind, but his love had made him strong enough to hold the terrible, devilish ideas at arm’s length, no matter how… tempting they might have been ── for lack of a better word. Alfred had had someone to be strong for. And Sarah had not had that advantage back at the castle. He could not fault her at all for what she did.
He was to blame.
He could have been stronger.
Alfred had made a promise to himself and Sarah that he would protect them both, that he would be the man she needed him to be. And he had failed the both of them.
No man could have halted the tears which now freely and silently flowed down his cheek.
Alfred swallowed, trying to swallow away the great lump in his throat, the burning anguish in his chest, the trembling of his lip and reached up a hand which shook slightly to cover Sarah’s. He should be speaking comforting words to Sarah, not the other way around. Even now he could not keep his promise to be all Sarah needed him to be. He had to try.
❝ Sarah, you won’t regret this. I will protect you. What I couldn’t do in life, I’ll try to do in death, I swear it.❞
How he felt about the prospect of this new, bloodstained existance wasn’t important.

Contentment. Satisfaction. Pleasure.
Such comprised the entirety of Alfred’s world right now. With a single-minded devotion, he pulled the ambrosial nectar into himself, deeper and deeper, to each and every corner and every crevice of his being. Oh this was an unending happiness! It did not diminish nor did it grow level, indeed, it only grew, heightened with each and every passing moment! Greedy, he pulled harder at it, unable to resist the call of this siren.
But then, Alfred noticed that it did not quite fill his mouth entirely, and with a alarm, he realized that it began to run short. He pulled harder, and only too quickly, the warmth trailed off and ceased all together. It was empty. And with it, the happiness had fled, leaving a hollowness within.
Gently, reluctantly he pulled away, opening his eyes and he froze.
Sudden disgust flooded his senses, as Alfred quickly dropped the woman to the ground and staggered back in horror.
He had killed her.
And not only that, he had defiled her.
Alfred could only stare in complete disbelief, shock numbing him entirely to anything and everything, rendering him devoid of feeling. God knew how long he stood there in the icy winds, the cold snow and ice swirling around the stunned predator and his unexpected prey. He kept searching the corpse for breathing, for a twitch, for a shutter, for anything which could spell life, praying for a miracle.
But the minutes passed and none came.
He slowly, tentatively reached out, but swiftly pulled his hand back. He had no right to so much as lay a finger on her after the horrific thing he had just done. He could still feel her blood running warm in his veins, the only legacy this stranger had left behind.
The last thing he remembered was lying in the snow, the icy mass quickly draining him of all warmth, and a dark crimson staining the pure white. The last he had felt feel was sharp pain flooding his senses, something tearing into him ── no not someone ── Sarah ripping away at him. Then, he had been lying in the snow, the icy mass had been quickly draining him of warmth, and a dark crimson stained the pure white.
And then ──
And then …
He had become the very monster he once hunted.
The words came out rough and horse, his voice turned raw by the icy air and choked by anguish.
