I obviously know it’s not going to happen, but the storyteller in me is having some thoughts. You know, narrative wise, there could be a strong case for Sam and Bucky to have had a sexual relationship pre-FATWS. If I was writing it, it would have started in the same way:
- Sam off doing contract work
- Bucky trying to date while making amends
- Bucky’s therapist knowing about Sam (seemingly the only person who’s been trying to reach out to him)
- Bucky not replying to Sam’s messages
- Bucky sleeping on the floor (I have a point about that)
- Bucky being overly annoyed with Sam
- Them being comfortable with being physical with one another
- The couples therapy that Dr. Raynor had them participate in
- The very heated moments between them even though they are working together
- Bucky not trusting Redwing
If this was my story, this tension building would lead to the reveal that they had slept together, on a number of occasions, over a few months. They would have come together out of loneliness and genuine attraction. And Bucky really wanted something more with Sam, but Sam needed to go home and help his family. Sam called it off, and it hurt Bucky. That’s why he talks about Sam in therapy. That’s why his misplaced anger about the shield was aimed at Sam: He thinks Sam discards things (and people) when he’s done with them, or if they don’t fit into the life he wants for himself. Sam does care for Bucky, he just doesn’t feel like he can be in a relationship with him because he has so much on his plate already. He checks in with Bucky, but Bucky never replies. He goes to, but all he can type is how much he misses Sam. But he never sends the texts because he thinks Sam doesn’t care about him.
Sam tries to keep the conversation light when Bucky’s around. Teasing him, like he did before. Bucky thinks what they had together for three whole months meant nothing to Sam; he can’t even sleep in his own bed because it reminds him of how it felt to lay there with Sam. It was in that same bed that Sam said he couldn’t be with Bucky how Bucky wanted him to. He’s still carrying those feelings of rejection with him. He doesn’t see how Sam looks at him when he’s not looking. He doesn’t know that Sam still wants him. But Sam doesn’t let himself want and hope. He just gets on with it. Squashes his feelings deep down inside. They’re both hurting, but they keep working together. And maybe it’s because they’re too drawn to one another to completely shut the other out of their life for good.
Narrative wise, what we’ve been given could go in this direction quite naturally. I mean, if it was my story it definitely would. If it was a cishet man and woman it would (seen that a thousand times on our screens). So yeah, just some thoughts from a storyteller.
