Orphaned at a very young age, Beef was raised by members of the U in their desert home of Forgotten Springs.

Beef learned many skills from his adoptive mother U’zhango - hunting, cooking, even song. After her passing during the Calamity he became an adventurer by retracing her footsteps, determined to uncover the truth of her sudden departure from his life.

The status of Beef’s guardianship changes often due to his wayward nature, but he is currently in the care of representatives from the merchant company Viper & Co LLC, based in Gridania. It’s worth noting that these guardians are none other than the archmage Eryna Spellgrave - Warrior of Light, and her husband Caranar.

During an outing with these allies, Beef was exposed to aether borne from the primal Garuda, and was partially tempered. The incomplete nature of this affliction has led to an unprecedented case of symbiotic tempering, providing Beef with enhanced senses and an aptitude for manipulating wind-aspected aether. In exchange, Beef is now constantly accompanied by a (rather cantankerous) avian familiar come to be known as Gale.

Beef is a precocious, kindhearted child who often cannot help but help others. He wields his naivety as sword, shield, and salve all at once, empowering him to make compassionate decisions that a more mindful individual may not consider - not because they are sensible, but because they are right.

What's one technological innovation U'bifu would be miserable without?

He's actually pretty skillful with low-tech solutions bc of his hunter-gatherer upbringing, at least when it comes to survivalist matters. Cooking, gathering firewood, and securing decent shelter would be inconvenient but not problematic. While he knows how to use teleportation magic and attune to aetherytes (teaching him this was a mistake), he's not averse to travel on foot either, as there's time to stop and sketch vistas or press plants along the way.

Despite not being fanciest gadget and only seeing situational use, I think the most crucial innovation he relies on are the earmuffs Kozu crafted for him for when he wishes to stifle his preternatural hearing. While there's little chance of forcing them upon the source of the amplification, Beef can at least wear them himself to reduce his own contribution to his and Gale's paired senses. It's not uncommon to see him rely on their use when managing crowds, machinery, or battles with outburst-prone monstrosities, and without their aid any stint spent in Solution 9 or anywhere else electrope is used in excess would be completely untenable.

Even beyond their utility, Beef has a particular fondness for the earmuffs as they put him in mind of the legendary huntress and Warrior of Light, Renda-Rae. That same light of hers would not have shone half as bright were it not for their shared condition, and 'tis heartening to have something in common with a hero.
