Reiner being "dishonest" to Porco

Reiner had been doubting about his qualification of being a warrior(and deserving his mom's love) ever since Marcel told him his secret. The failure of Paradis mission strengthened the belief that he didn't deserve to be a warrior, because Marcel had stole this from Porco.

Reiner must have felt that he at least have to protect Porco at all cost, for Marcel's sake, after Porco inherited the Jaw Titan against Marcel's wish. Reiner felt he owed Porco that. He low-key kept an eye out for Porco as a way to repay his debt to Marcel saving his life. And I believe Reiner did care about Porco, even if it's not for Marcel's sake. He would endure Porco's sarcasm and protect him from the painful secret of Marcel. Reiner was possibly afraid that the truth would taint Marcel's image in Porco's mind, and he waited for Porco to see the memory of Marcel's secret by himself in time.

This "dishonest and insincere" attitude of Reiner irritated Porco so much and he felt so frustrated. These two, even when they did care about the other, it was almost impossible for them to understand and help each other properly.

All these misunderstandings, obstables and tangling contribute to the depth of gallirei relationship. The more they have to go through, the sweeter the end can be, if there will ever be a good ending for them.

Reiner's cage of mind

Reiner lived in the cage of his own mind for 4 years after he returned to Marley, hiding the secret of Marcel from Porco, and hiding how happy he's been growing up with fake friends in Paradis.

He's an outsider among the warriors and he had no one to talk to, even if Porco tried to talk with Reiner and get something out of him in vain. No one could see and understand Reiner's struggle because he couldn't let anyone know his true self even if he needed a friend so much. Even when Eren showed up and said "I understand you. We are the same," Reiner just wanted his miserable life to end and forgot the guilt for the people he cared about.

But Porco caught up to Reiner's state of mind(partially) after the experience of the humiliating defeat in Liberio. He could finally empathize with him and help him get his determination back.

Even though Reiner still couldn't tell Porco about Marcel's secret, it was time that Porco felt it's ok to let the grudge go, because he hated the fear of losing someone important, not again. And this feeling is mutual.

How gallirei relationship changed after the Paradis raid on Liberio

21 y/o Reiner can be polite, gentle and tolerating towards the kids and Porco, but the young fightsy debating him is still living within. I like that about him. He is not a pushover strained with guilt, he has his strong will to manage his manners.

If Porco could've helped him with more gentle understanding...Reiner could've not bowed down before Eren. But Reiner held his secret about Marcel and wouldn't let the truth hurt Porco, that's probably why he couldn't let Porco see the whole truth about him. Hence Porco always felt something was iffy and he couldn't get the answer he needed. Porco wanted to be closer to Reiner but always shut out by Reiner. They're both insecure about the dishonest and the truth stuck between them.

Reiner didn't want Porco to see his vulnerability, until the Paradis raid on Liberio. Seeing the loved one almost die, something changed in both of them. Reiner and Porco managed to put their insecurities aside and opened themselves more to each other, and built a more trusting comradeship. And this is probably when they could talk about love.

Reiner is a purpose-driven person.

From being a hero saving humanity to saving Gabi, it's his way to face his depressing life.

I headcanon when he returns to Marley after he failed in Paradis, he finds his meaning in life again to repay Marcel by protecting Porco. Because Marcel didn't want Porco to be a warrior but Porco still ends up being one, and Reiner feels responsible for it.

From protecting Porco to falling in love with him is not a very far journey, because they had their history, friendship and complicated emotions towards each other back in cadet years.

Porco is soft for Reiner even though he acts all tough to Reiner, so it's easy they fall for each other very quickly. (And they are as young as 17 when they meet again.)
