Within the woods, shrouded by twisted and gnarled branches, Eddie hears the saccharine call that ricochets off each tree and straight into his ears. When it had started, it was whispers that stroked at his cheeks, but now it howls desperately, for what? Eddie can only hope to know, and he can only hope that it’s not intended for him.

Eddie attempts to ignore the distant, detached voice as he plucks away at his guitar strings. Frustration stirs in his very soul when the calls synchronize with the strumming rather than come to a halt. Eddie can no longer dismiss the reality in which the beckoning melody is intended for him as it whistles through his hair and hisses across the frets under his touch.

Despite the misleading echoes, Eddie knows where the tune is coming from. It pulls at his rigid core and rakes against his bones until they ache. The lure is impossible to brush aside any longer, so with his guitar abandoned against a well-used stump-turned seat, Eddie heads toward the call.

After an altercation with his dad, Steve hides away in the pantry in his kitchen and calls for help on the walkie-talkie. Luckily, Eddie is awake and comes to the rescue, stealing Steve away to stay at the Munsons’ until it’s safe for Steve to go back. Steve hates when either of his parents come home to visit, especially when it’s his dad. It feels ridiculous to say but Steve thinks he’d rather face another Demogorgon. 

A Demogorgon will smell blood in the water and kill on sight, but Mr. Harrington has a habit of dragging it out and making sure his prey knows they’re bleeding. The monsters under the bed are nothing compared to the monsters down the hall, Steve’s an expert. He’s known for a long time now how messed up it all is, he knows he needs out, needs help, but it feels impossibly hard. It’s normal for him and he’s dealt with it this long, he just needs to tough it out until he can afford his own place.

It doesn’t occur to Steve that he has tons of people willing to fight monsters at his side, whether the monsters are from the Upside Down or his own home. With the help of his monster hunting crew, Steve works to escape his parents and learn what love is supposed to be.

Because the feds wanted the entirety of an alternate dimension that had nearly ripped the world in half kept under wraps, Eddie got exactly what he wanted.

It was better than he’d ever felt looking in the mirror since he was thirteen and spent every day for a month sobbing in the corner of his bed because of the betrayal of his own body. He wouldn’t need his binder or Ace bandages, wrapped tight enough around his chest that sometimes it was hard to breathe.

In the end, it was only five months.

Five months, and then his whole life. More time than he believed he’d ever get to have.

The actual healing had only been about eight weeks, but the swelling was slow to go down, along with the aching mixed in with the rest of his torn-up body. His start on physical therapy was postponed until his top scars were fully healed, but he didn’t care that it put him behind. 

It had led him here. To a random Saturday in September of 1986 where he was going to a barbecue with friends he’d helped to save the Shire. While wearing nothing more than a t-shirt over his chest.

No binder. No bandages. 

He was Eddie fucking Munson. And ‘86 was still his year.

The black marker was a stark contrast against his pale skin and looked almost like his other tattoos. It wasn’t a stretch to imagine Eddie getting one of these marks etched more permanently into his skin for Steve. 

Something more private next, personal, a place only a lover would see. As he moved Eddie’s legs apart and pulled one of his knees up and laid it aside, Eddie let out a startled whimper. 

Steve kissed the side of his leg and looked down the line of it, picked a spot on the inner thigh, high up, so that as he wrote the letters Eddie’s erection was right next to his face. It jerked as Steve smoothed his hand further down his thigh, so close to where he wanted to put his mouth. On Eddie. He wasn’t sure he was brave enough to suck him off yet, but he knew he wanted to. He could admit that much.

“Tell me what’s that.” Eddie demanded.

Steve hesitated as if Eddie wouldn't see it himself later. He pressed a soft kiss to the letters, then another, feeling Eddie against his cheek. Liking it. He wanted him. Didn’t think he had ever wanted anyone this much before. 

He leaned back, caught Eddie's gaze. “It says Steve.”

Coming back to himself in the Upside Down is abrupt and brief. 

Waking up again afterwards happens slowly. He swims back to consciousness as if wading against a current, trying to pull him back into Death’s sweet embrace - she misses you, the water whispers. Come back to her - and it is all he can do to avoid sinking. 

The wind whispers too. Tales of the after, of peace and tranquility and comfort, of an end to all suffering. Of an eternity in which he is loved and cared for and respected, in which there is no Eddie Munson, alleged murderer. In which Chrissy Cunningham is more than just a memory he clings to as the world crumbles to pieces around him. 

But there’s voices underneath the wind and the water. Snatches of words he can’t make out, but holds onto nonetheless. Flashes of concern, at first, of fear, and then later - 

Flashes of that fucking tone. 

In the end, as it was always meant to be, it is Dustin Henderson who brings Eddie back from the dead.  “- for fuck’s sake, would you stay the fuck in bed?”

There are other people in the store but they pay him no mind as he stocks up on potatoes, cornmeal, and another section of dried bacon. This time blessedly clean of sand.

Eddie smiles giddily at the prospect of a semi-decent meal for the first time in weeks, so caught up in his daydream of a luxurious breakfast that he doesn’t notice someone standing behind him until he feels a tap on his shoulder.

Eddie’s stomach drops into the pits of hell and his stance goes rigid as he turns his head to the side just enough to catch a glimpse of the man behind him.

“Munson,” Steve Harrington, of all people, greets.

Eddie’s eyes widened, taking one brief second to be bewildered at the familiar face before rearing back and punching him right in the head. The added weight of the dried meat in Eddie’s hand forces him to stagger back, giving Eddie the opening he needs to escape.

Eddie crams whatever he’s holding into his pockets before bolting past Harrington and out the door, ignoring the yell of the store clerk as he books it outside.

Steve laughs, and it’s the nicest sound Eddie’s ever heard. He wants to melt into it. Cut it off with a kiss against those plush lips. They’ve drifted closer, Eddie’s not even sure when or how or who initiated it. But they’re inches apart and it wouldn’t take much for one of them to close the distance. 

“Eddie-”

“Steve-”

“Hey, dinguses! Where the fuck did you disappear to?”

They spring apart, and Steve jumps to his feet, raking a hand through his hair. “Smoke break, Henderson. And stop calling me that, only Robin gets to call me that!”

Dustin steps out onto the deck and quirks a brow at him. “Sure, Steve, whatever. We’re ready to start the next movie. Are you coming or what?”

“Yeah, yeah, be right there.”
