Roommate AUs

We’re both moving into the same apartment with a mutual friend of ours but we didn’t know each other and it’s dislike at first sight, but now we’ve got to live together,

There was a spider in my room and yes, you rescued it by putting it outside, but I still won’t sleep in this room tonight!,

Starting a friends with benefits relationship with your roommate quickly blurs some lines…,

We support different sports teams and I think we might went a little overboard with our competitiveness before the big game,​

You got yourself stuck in the bathroom again, I told you we need to call the caretaker to fix the lock on the door, why do you never listen, but yes, I’m getting a screwdriver,

There are love letters coming in the mail but with nothing written on the outside, not even a name, so I always give them to you, because I just assume they’re for you because I think I’ve seen you holding one of the envelopes before and you’re the kind of person that has a secret admirer, definitely not me…,

We just moved into a shared apartment and I find out you like to sing while doing your chores and I really like your voice,

I like cats but no one should love their fur balls as much as you do, but now there’s a storm outside and the cat’s not at home and you’re devasted so now we run through the rain, screaming for your cat,

Hello!!!! Do you have any tips / prompts for slowburn? Or romance in general? It's been a long time since i wrote about love and I think I'm rusty ;;;

Hi :)

Here are some tips for writing slow burn romance.

Slow burn

Slowing it down

make it slow, but not too slow. Give the readers little moments and interactions at first and then show how they develop a deeper connection over time

you need realistic reasons for why they are not together yet

here are two lists of reasons why people break up while still loving each other and for forbidden love that you could both use

Chemistry

make it realistic, a couple with good chemistry needs to be balanced

they need to have similarities to make them connect, but don’t just agree with everything the other one is doing

same goes for contradicting traits, it is important to show the differences and working around them makes for a good partnership, but don’t have them fight constantly

Don’ts

slow burn is often full of mistakes, misunderstandings and problems, but your characters should never do something that is unforgivable for the other person

don’t make one person totally unlikable without a believable redemption arc and the other person to be a sweetheart, because chances are, the readers may not even want them to be together in the end

don’t make the pair dysfunctional without giving the reader reason to believe that they better themselves and their relationship, otherwise the reader will leave the happy ending feeling like this is not going to work out in the long run and is therefore really unsatisfying

I don’t have specific prompts for slow burn right now, but check out my romance tag if there is something in there that inspires you. Here are two older prompts I instantly thought of (from this post).

“We don’t have to go quick if you feel uncomfortable. I just need to know that we’re moving somewhere.”

ordering in half of the time 

mainly due to being too lazy to cook

but the other half, you share cooking responsibilities 

watching the office together 

arguing about who’s the better character

and smiling every time you see it in pictures 

and seeing fans make fun of him for wearing the same shirt 

long days spent by the pool 

longer nights staying up talking about everything
