Ben Affleck and Matt Damon once considered starring in a film adaptation of the gay novel The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story. Damon stated that he and Affleck “almost made it years ago. The script wasn’t good enough, but the book is great.”

Originally released in 1992, The Dreyfus Affair tells the story of a love affair between two male baseball players, Randy and D.J., and the scandal that erupted after it went public.

In 1999, the New York Daily News reported that Affleck was eyeing the role:
